Around SBN: VIDEO: The Daily Show Talks Jeremy Lin

A's Sign O-Cab

[Editorial Note: this just came across the newswire. San Jose A's does a nice, concise job of summarizing what I'm sure we're all thinking]

1 year deal for 4M, courtesy of Tim Brown.

This move shores up the make-up of the team (at least until the trading deadline), and the price is right (even though some lower numbers were thrown out there for a while, 4M is still pretty solid).

While some may be sentimental about Bobby Crosby and his early potential, there's not much one can say about his recent performance...it's hard to imagine him breaking into games now, and it's hard to think of any other team that wants him.

I think I'd also said...

…that Cabrera is better than Crosby in the main offensive categories and while I’m not that up on all the defensive stats, someone else could compare if they wanted to but at least Cabrera’s won a couple Gold Gloves, one as recent as 2007.

For $4 million I say it’s worth a look. What, like Crosby’s done something to warrant keeping the job?

juice aside....

his hitting has looked good early in spring. Granted its far too early to make anything of it, but orlando cabrera isnt exactly a gigantic upgrade especially if we’re just going to bat him 7-9.

by tafkasam on Mar 2, 2009 10:01 PM PST up reply actions

hahah how so?

on a serious note, we still have to pay crosby’s contract, no? Unless someone wants to trade for him, which hasnt been seemed so far being as BB ha tried all offseason

by tafkasam on Mar 2, 2009 10:12 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe defend wasn't the right word

But your suspicion that he’s juicing just because McGwire’s been helping him with his swing is about as ridiculous as it gets.

Cabrera doesn’t have to be a gigantic upgrade to be worth having more than Crosby. He’s better both offensively and defensively and I’d rather have him there than Crosby.

I don’t even really care what the A’s do with Crosby now, but I hope they trade him. They weren’t going to do anything with him unless they brought someone else in. Now they have.

Only a 1 year deal? Really? Is there even an optional 2nd year?

Because, IMO, giving up a draft pick isn’t really that big of a deal since Cabrera is only getting 4M. Whatever.

I can’t be the only one who realizes that we’re going to be in the EXACT same situation next year now, right?

Bobby was on his way out next year. This at least gives us an upgrade for a ‘contending’ year (or so the team on paper says).

Toronto might take Crosby...

… if we offered to pay 60-70% of his salary. They have Scutaro at SS; Scoot’s really better as a utility IF/pinch-hitter. Dount we’d get anything back, but we might be able to save $1.5M – $2.0M of Crosby’s salary.

90-97% may be more realistic, but...

Despite the fact that he’s an atrocious hitter, Crosby still does have some value as a SS.

I don’t think it would unreasonable to ask Toronto to take on $1.5M of his salary (approx. 30%) if we are not asking for any prospects in return (i.e., if we say, “Give us that 28-year-old who can’t hit A-ball pitching”). At $1.5M for one season, even Bobby Crosby’s a deal.

Scoot had a Hell of a year for Toronto in '08

I don’t think they’re in a rush to replace him unless they’re certain the new guy would clearly be better. Not sure that applies to Crosby.

Yes

If for no other reason than Cabrera’s a bargain at $4M, whereas Furcal would have getting basically exactly what he deserved at $10M per year.

If the question is: Are the A’s better with O-Cab or Furcal, I’d say Furcal.
But, taking the contracts into account, I’d take O-Cab any day of the week.

Not just $$, though, injuries, as well

With Chavez/Furcal/Ellis/Barton, everyone on the infield is injury-prone — you’d have guys at 3B, SS and 2B who all suffered nearly career-ending injuries.

So to spend so much less for a guy who’s been more durable (though not as good a hitter) seems like an excellent outcome, to me.

Crosby's numbers will crush NO-cabs

or, No-Cabs as I like to call him.
I just don’t get it – nobody was dying to sign him; why not see what we’ve got in Crosby this go around (which, albeit small sample size, looks pretty good), and if it doesn’t look good, THEN sign Cabrera.

While disappointed in what Crosby’s done lately, I just got a feeling on this – he’s going to have a great year, and Cabrera will look like a really bad move after the Sox nab someone in the draft that ends up being a star. Ugh. I know – Crosby’s not popular, but I’m telling ya – he’s going to be big this year. If he gets traded to Toronto, look out.

Last Year

I had this feeling that Crosby was going to have a big year.. He played 140 games and sucked.

So this year I’ve been thinking “This Year”.. and I was against signing Cabrera, pretty much because I like Bobby Crosby, and I want him to have a big year.

But now I’m fine with it. we have a shortstop who is better than what Crosby has been. I hope he moves on, I hope he has his Big Year. But it’s time for a change, he had his chance and he didn’t perform well enough to keep his job. It will be fun to see who Beane goes after for 2010’s SS.

I'm in the Minority Here ...

… but why?

Yes, one year at $4 million is a great deal, but is Cabrera really an upgrade over Crosby?

Cabrera’s career stats: OBP .322; SLG .399
Crosby’s career stats: OBP .306; SLG .380

Cabrera is 34 and Crosby is 29. Isn’t it reasonable to expect Crosby to improve slightly after his off season work?

Plus, the A’s have to pay Crosby any way, so they are now paying $9.5 million to get average production out of the shortstop position.

I think that $4 million could be better spent elsewhere.

Projections overestimate Crosby because they keep assuming a regression in his BABIP

Oliver is the only projection system to project Giambi’s BABIP over .263. So I’d be inclined to disbelieve Oliver’s projection of an 890 OPS, but not Marcel’s projection of an .830, which is roughly league average production for a DH or a bad defensive 1B.

Yeah, he is ...

Crosby’s career stats are buoyed by his relatively strong first two seasons — he has been much worse over the last three.

Crosby has gotten worse, not better, over the course of his career and any minor improvements in offense would most likely be offset by continuing deterioration of his defense with age.

Crosby is the worst player on the team (that they expected regular PT from) and it’s not even close. His salary is a sunk cost … it’s a relatively minor upgrade, but it’s the biggest upgrade the team could make at this point, short of signing Manny or something ridiculous like that …

He had problems sharing last year, and at 29 he’s got virtually zero projection left in him. If Chavez, Ellis and Giambi all miss huge, gaping chunks of time then I don’t Crosby coming on as our savior. It’ll be another lost year, in which case I’d rather the kids play to see what they’ve got.

He’s an inferior defender and an inferior base runner (which is more of a consideration for backups) and only a marginally better hitter (if that) … I think it would probably make a lot of sense to have an offense oriented backup infielder (Nomar) paired with a more traditional, speedy gloveman (not Crosby) …

Over the last 3 years, Cabrera has been worth on average, almost 3 wins more than Crosby.

Its a second round pick (as we draft in the first half of the first round) and a pick that we stand to recoup if Cabrera doesn’t fall off a cliff this year. Thats pretty unlikely considering unlike Crosby (or Furcal) he’s actually been able to stay on the field in years past.

His performance at the Coliseum isn’t a basis for evaluating this deal, IMHO.

other considerations from a commenter at Fangraphs:

1) the A’s have the option of trading Crosby for one or more of cash/roster-spot/younger filler. that in itself could equal the value of the 2nd round pick.

2) the A’s can offer OCab arbitration next year, meaning they will hold onto him longer or (more likely) get picks back.

Virtually the same

Hannahan is a strong defender. Of course, Nomar is still probably a better option because of his handedness. Nomar’s projected wOBA, going off CHONE, is .330; I bumped it to .340, assuming a platoon role, and it added about 1/4 of a win.

Crosby’s OPS is almost certainly going to go up even if his skills just held constant because he’s getting out of one of if not the most run-depressing park in the league.

My take

Cabrera was a definite A’s killer when he as on the Angels. If he can still hit .280 then he is a huge upgrade over Crosby’s .230+ and CLUTCH hitting is a very important stat – hitting with runners on base – something the As haven’t done the past few years. Not just in scoring position but moving runners around the bases.

I think Cros will be kept on and trained to play 3rd for when Glass Eric takes another trip to the dl. But I’d love to see Nomar be that guy. Unfortunately Crosby’s low value is about zero now.

I was just selling myself on the Crosby trained with McGuire and Holiday story.

What I suppose can’t be measured is the benefit of having stability at the position. It must be frustrating coming to the park not knowing which infield position you will be playing or even if you are going to be playing. At least with O-Cab there is that intangible improvement. Other than that the offensive numbers aren’t too much to get excited about. The bump in defense is nice though.

task for somebody motivated and curious:

how good of a base runner is Cabrera? how does he compare to Crosby? 1st to 3rd, CS, etc. i know somebody has these stats

Save Rajai Davis

by oakinboston on Mar 2, 2009 2:24 PM PST reply actions

Baseball Prospectus

Has a stat called Equivalent Base Running Runs, which they say “[m]easures the number of runs contributed by a player’s advancement on the bases, above what would be expected based on the number and quality of the baserunning opportunities with which the player is presented, park-adjusted and based on a multi-year run expectancy table.”

Cabrera’s EqBRR’s over the last three years have been 9.0, 4.7, 2.7.
Crosby’s EqBRR over the last three years have been 0.8, 1.9, 2.9.

Based on that (take it for what it’s worth), O-Cab is probably not any better at baserunning that Croz.

by mikeA on Mar 2, 2009 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

OK... we can agree to disagree

Crosby’s EqBRR number is probably low in 2006 due to injuries (I assume EqBRR, like VORP, is higher for players with more playing time).

After that, we’re left with Crosby’s 2007 and 2008 numbers, which average out to about 2.4 runs above average. Cabrera may be slightly better than that, but the difference is probably negligible; maybe a run or two a season, or 0.1 or 0.2 wins per season. We could argue about this, but it’s not worth the time.

9+4.7+2.7

4.6

11.8 runs over 3 years or 4 runs a year is nearly half a win from base running … that’s a pretty big deal …

by devo on Mar 2, 2009 2:40 PM PST up reply actions

Trends more important than averages...

… especially when taking O-Cab’s trend may be directly related to his age (his baserunning seems to be getting worse each year as he ages) and Crosby’s trend may be related to his increased playing time (Crosby’s low 2006 EqBRR number is likely due to the fact that he only played half of the season). I’ll concede that O-Cab may be worth a 1/10th or 2/10ths of a win over Crosby on the bases (see my comment above)… not a very big deal.

base running is a SSS kind of stat … a weighted average would probably be best …

Well done Billy!

Over the last 3 years, Crosby has been the 42nd, 47th, and 39th best offensive SS according to VORP (Value Over Replacement Player). Cabrera has been the 16th, 10th, and 13th best offensive SS. While Crosby has put up numbers worthy of a mediocre backup SS, Cabrera has been an above average starting SS. Over the last 3 years, he has been the 10th best offensive SS…and his 2-time Gold Glove defense may move him up a notch or 2 in overall value:

Average VORP for SS over 3 years
———————————————-
75.0 Hanley Ramirez
57.1 Derek Jeter
56.0 Jose Reyes
51.6 Jimmy Rollins
45.4 Carlos Guillen
39.0 Miguel Tejada
37.4 Michael Young
32.4 Edgar Renteria
27.7 Rafael Furcal
27.1 Orlando Cabrera
25.3 Jhonny Peralta
       …30 other SS…
-3.8 Bobby Crosby

Cabrera over Crosby is a huge improvement at SS for us. FWIW, Cabrera was ranked the highest of all of our free agent signings (until we sign Manny :) ):
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-freeagenttracker111008
26) Orlando Cabrera, SS
31) Jason Giambi, DH
49) Russ Springer, RP
63) Dennys Reyes, RP (hopefully)
64) Nomar Garciaparra, UT (hopefully)

…so the A’s could wind up with 5 of the top 64 free agents this year…while the Angels have a net loss of 2 of the top 32 free agents (Teixeira, K-Rod, Garland, Anderson, but they add Abreu and Fuentes). I’m liking our chances more and more in the AL West.
