DLD 3/20/09 - March Sadness
This being March, the annual basketball mayhem is upon us. My family has a number of college ties, so let's see how we did.
Me: My two schools are UC Davis and Iowa State. Neither team is in any tournament, although ISU's women's team is seeded fourth in the West regional. The NCAA wrestling tournament is this week, and the Cyclones are tied for first place after the first day of action (although I expect the Hawks from Iowa City are going to win it).
My dad: Dad did all his schooling at the University of Illinois, where he was also on faculty before we moved to California. How did U of I do? - FAIL (BTW, I don't know what a Hilltopper is, but they have some cute logos). When we came west, dad took a faculty position at Berkeley. How about them Bears? Oh, yeah.
My brother: Undergrad was at Michigan - yay! Medical school was at Hawaii, (he, unlike me, is an MD) who is not in the tournament. My brother lives near Akron, OH, so how did the Zips do? Nuts.
Obviously, being even remotely connected to my family is the kiss of death for a basketball team this time of year.
Jon Heyman lists 34 (why 34? - who knows) prospects making noise during Spring Training this year. Anderson and Cahill at 10 and 11, Mazzaro is 23
Happy Vernal Equinox (at 4:44 am PDT) to all. Dump away!

Better than University of Oregon
I have been a huge college basketball fan my entire life, and now once i get to a school with normally a pretty decent team, they are so friggin bad I lose all enthusiasm for the entire sport of college basketball. That made filling out a bracket quite the challenge but I still love March Madness as much as ever.
Wake, UConn, Pitt and the Zags
Uconn over Pitt. Third time is the charm.

I'm pickin' Pitt...
not that I have a rooting interest since I didn’t fill out a bracket this year. I just think they’ll win it. It seems pretty wide open this year.

Fucking Cal! I hate that they flamed out in the first round, dammit!
However, my fiancee’ is dancing happily because she is from D.C . and went to both University of Maryland and West Virgina.
By the way, when is UWV playing? Or have they already? I don’t follow the tourney all that closely. Thanks….M-Rod

I wouldn't know
As much of a sports fan as I am, I really couldn’t care less about my school’s athletics. I’m a Duke and Stanford fan more than an Aggie fan.

that's an awesome story
I had the pleasure of being the beat write for a DIII National Champion basketball team back in the day. Those tournaments, while much smaller in scale, are very intense and passionate. A lot of fun.
Those MIT guys are pretty big. A 6-8 forward would have been taller than anybody in the tournament I would think. In the NCAAs we won i don’t think I saw anyone bigger than 6-6

I didn't even know we had a water polo team, to be honest
Anyway, yeah, Caltech literally has to force people to play in order to fill out sports teams. If they played a D-I— hell, maybe even D-II— basketball team, they might get shut out. Literally.

)ff-topic: Anyone have Vonage or any other VoIP?
What’s the quality like? Any concerns before I think about switching my small business service from ATT?

I used to use Vonage for my friend's business.
Don’t do it. It’s not worth the hassle. It disconnects a LOT — even during the middle of calls. A tad embarassing when talking to attorneys and the like. The quality during a call isn’t bad though. No static or anything.
And just to qualify, this was about a year ago. Also, fax machines hooked up to it don’t work out too well either.
Just my experience. :)

I've heard that the Comcast VOIP works well though,
but have no direct experience with that one. With Vonage, I think you get what you pay for.

Hit-or-miss
I love it because I can use my vonage router anywhere, including Japan. I pay about 250 bucks a year for unlimited voice calls to my family in America. It even works okay with my crappy 112kbps connection. When I had fast internet, the quality was great.
My dad, however, had a horrible experience with them. The calls always dropped. It was pretty frustrating.

Stiglich updates
Justin Duchscherer threw a 25-pitch bullpen session, his first time throwing off a mound in about three weeks. We haven’t had a chance to chat w/him yet, but manager Bob Geren said Duchscherer felt good afterward. I saw Duchscherer snap off several of the slow, arching curves that he likes to use, so his elbow must be feeling decent to throw that many breaking balls.
Another positive development for the A’s: Mark Ellis is set to play second base in a minor league game Saturday, which will be his first defensive action of the spring.

In other "sports" news, the Iditarod hits a grand slam.
Four dogs this year, 140 since they started keeping score.
These are the premier athletes of their breed. It seems to me that if this kind of thing happened in the Olympics, or the Tour de France, there’d be a great deal of soul-searching on the fundamental questions, and process reform if they chose to continue the competition.
And humans have a much freer will on questions like whether to compete, and when to stop.

So interesting how these women treat the dolls. The best is this grandma whose daughter moves to New Zealand and takes the grandson with her. Grandma is totally devastated to lose her grandson, so she has a doll made that looks just like him when he was an infant. At the very end of the show the doll arrives, and she gets on a webcam to show the grandson. She asks him what she thinks of his replica and I swear, this 7 year old replies “It’s just a doll, you numbnuts.” Can you imagine! The grandma is so exicted and beaming with anticipation, and that’s what he says? You can’t write this stuff.

I don’t like March Madness, it takes everyones attention off baseball. You would think that alone would make the MLB think about moving the WBC to a different month.

that accomplish nothing but injuring players and providing fodder for inane ramblings by the worst kind of “analysts.”
