Open Thread: Spring Training Game 15 - A's vs. D-Backs
After a day away from the diamond, the A's are back at it today, as they take on Arizona. An old friend gets the starting nod for the D-Backs, while Bob Geren sends right-hander Vin Mazzaro to the mound for Oakland.
Also slated to pitch are Jerry Blevins, Gio Gonzalez, Josh Outman, and Michael Wuertz.
The A's are 7-6-1 in Cactus League play (including split-squad action) and are not even halfway into a schedule that features an Oakland-record 37 Spring Training games. So while we're still 25 days from the real deal, there is ample time to get out to the desert. And for those so lucky, it's like Christmas in March.

Woot! Unicorn is in!!!!

Awww… Unicorn's optimistic. And a cheeseball. That’s cute. ~Whiteshoes40
So over on MLBTraderumors.com
There was some discussion about the Cards trying Skip Schumaker at 2B wasn’t working. Seeing as we have many people who could probably end up at 2B, is there a trade we could work out with them?
As far as I figure, Pennington, Petit, Crosby, Hannahan and maybe even Corey Wimberly could probably play a competent 2B this year. Seeing as the Cardinals have Pujols blocking Wallace at 1B, and Glaus blocking Wallace who’s blocking Craig and Freese at 3B, would it make sense to work a trade of one of our 2B for Craig/Freese?
Chavez will probably be gone after next year. There’s an 2011 option, but unless he plays extremely well this year, he probably won’t be worth it. They’re not really going to be studs, but they could absolutely be decent. Really, the only legit 3B prospect we have might be Cardenas, who’s really a 2B.
So what do you think?
Cardenas
Perhaps Cardenas’s position will depend on the development of Jemile Weeks. If Weeks pans out, Cardenas shifts to third base. If Weeks flops, Cardenas slides over to second base. Just a thought.
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
Well yes, but either way you look at it
He is the only prospect that looks like he could be play third in the future, but he’s a second baseman. Our third base pool is very weak, and this could strengthen it.
Wasn't there some off-season chatter about Buck getting a tryout at third?
What happened with that?
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
I wouldn't even call it chatter.
I think somebody mentioned in an article that he played it in college, and that Geren had him take a couple balls at third in case of an emergency.
Don’t count on it.
Obvious. Patterson and Barton for Wallace and Pujols.

thats a ridiculous trade...

Which Landon Powell showed up in Arizona?
Slim LP or Big LP?
Root for the Giants? Not even if they're playing al-Qaeda!
I saw him briefly in the game MLB.tv carried.
He’s a big guy. Didn’t look huge, nor svelte……which to him I gather is a good thing.
Excellent.
Now if he can just keep from blowing out his knees.

If ever a game should have been called on account of wind, that one was it. Good thing Jerry Blevins didn't have to pitch; he's tall, skinny, and I could practically see one of the 40-mph gusts...sweeping him off the bump and pinning him to the left-field fence. --Mychael Urban

You think the A’s will play ‘Holiday’ by Madonna when he smacks a HR?
Anyone know if he had a theme song in Colorado?
Seems like the A’s are making him the ‘face’ this year.

Any word on how hard he's been throwing??
I know its early in ST, but when we aquired him I kept hearing he sat in the low 90’s and could hump it up to 95. He wasn’t even close during his tour at the end up last season. Sat 88-90 and I never saw him above 92 MPH. Could have been late season fatigue but I wanna see his best stuff.
Not sure
but it certainly didn’t look like anything above low 90s. Didn’t really matter though, he wasn’t throwing that many strikes early in the count.
