March 10th Daily Link Dump: Denorfia!
In case you hadn't seen the news yet our very own Chris Denorfia was a hero last night for team Italy. I was very suprised to see this but happy. Then again, there are quite a few major leaguers on the Italy roster.
I love track bike racing. Where are the local tracks? And check out this guy's PE logo tattoo. That is coolness.
Knitters don't like springing ahead either.
112 Canadians have died in Afghanistan. I don't mean this as a poltical post but I have members of my in laws, my Canadian family, who are in Afghanistan. Every time that I hear a headline on the news about causalities I make sure that it is not somebody that I know. I am generally against war and I heart goes out to family members and soldiers world wide. I want everyone to come home safe.
I am actually going to run in shorts today. It is just above freezing. Yay. Seriously, I miss California, California winters, and running here.

Recruiting
Total size of school population = completely irrelevant to quality of team.
They may correlate (I’m sure they do), but even that is indirect… big = bigger reputation = easier recruiting.
Either way, a Stanfurd fan using school size as an excuse is humorous.

a better excuse might be
the fact that they actually have academic standards for student athletes

UCD is hardly a slouch academically
When I was there (‘81-’85), the only scholarships available to the athletes were academic ones that required a 3.0 GPA to keep. I don’t know about now, but I imagine the Div 1 players of today will still need to qualify admission to the University, which, if anything, is even harder today than in 1981.

UC Davis is a great, great school academically and i’m sure they hold students to a high standard. it’s just that stanford is pretty much the highest in that regard

Regarding TravDog6's Academics excuse
This is a very old one.
On the other hand, they have offered like 23242 players already…pool doesn’t seem to small.
Also, much like Cal, Stanford’s biggest draw is academics. Player who’d want to come to stanford are also the ones most likely to qualify.
In other words, stanford isn’t losing out too much due to academics, since the kids who they can’t offer (one’s who can’t get in), are also the ones who wouldn’t want to go to Stanford anyways (for the most part).
by ohmangoAs on Mar 11, 2009 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don't buy that
stanford, from what i’ve read, absolutely does hold its players to a higher academic standards than other schools.
stanford can’t offer scholarships to many of the top recruits due to academic standards. maybe it’s true that these kids wouldn’t want to go there, but i’m sure if they lowered there academic standards they would get a lot more top recruits.
i don’t see why kids who can’t get into stanford wouldn’t want to go to stanford.

because top players
who are not top students (relative to other football players)
are usually prioritizing their non-academic interests in High School, and will continue to do so.
Seriously…look at the players Cal has offered, and notice that Stanford has too…
It’s because the players interested in Cal usually like Stanford, and vice versa- For Academics.
To the extent that’s not true, it’s because some players Cal gets/offers Stanford can’t get because you know, stanford’s not good :)
by ohmangoAs on Mar 11, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i guess that's true
altho, iirc, back when stanford was good (i know, i’m going really far back here) they weren’t exactly getting the best players ever. if i had number/data etc. i might have an argument but oh well.

but other than not making the grades before the transfered, D. J. Rivera has not done anything but play really good basketball. But i see the reasoning behind blackballing him as a protest to the schools recruiting practices, dont agree with it but understand it.

Some more...
Dodgers not allowed to offer arbitration to Manny
There is a provision in Manny Ramirez’s contract that would prevent the Dodgers from offering the All-Star outfielder salary arbitration when he files for free agency. That means that if Ramirez declines the $20-million player option for 2010 and is a ranked free agent, the Dodgers wouldn’t be compensated with draft picks if they lose him to another club.
This could increase Ramirez’s value if he is again a Type A free agent — a player determined by the Elias Sports Bureau to rank in the top 20% of his position group based on his statistics over the previous two seasons. Teams that sign a Type A free agent are forced to give their first-round pick in the next amateur draft to the player’s former club. A Type A free agent’s former club is also entitled to a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.
Also, some new light was shed on the reasons the negotiations between Manny and the Dodgers took so long:

And the “next” Billy Beane is?
And think about who have been the most successful general managers in the last three decades? Pat Gillick and John Schuerholz both rose to the top with a strong scouting background. And what were Billy Beane and Terry Ryan doing before they took over in Oakland and Minnesota, respectively? That’s right, scouting.

It was at home, against the Rays, when B.J. Upton hit an RBI double in a tie game in the ninth inning, scoring Akinori Iwamura to end the streak.
“Not only do I give up a run,” Ziegler thought to himself when it ended, “but now we’re losing.”
The crowd gave him a standing ovation; the A’s came back to win the game; and Cooperstown asked for his cleats. When it was over, Ziegler was finally able to interact with his teammates.
The a’s lost that game. seriously how hard would it have been for her to look that up. but other than that pretty solid article.

Brad Ziegler led all relievers in baseball with a 1.06 ERA out of the Oakland A’s bullpen.
I realize that different sources might put their minimum innings cutoff in different places, but Joey Devine usually qualifies with his 45.7 innings of 0.61 ERA pitching. Ziggy only pitched 14 more innings than that himself.

I'm no fan of Jon Heyman
but it rings true. F***, Wolff, what the hell? It couldn’t have waited one more year? The A’s position would have been SO much better for “going for it” in 2010.

Would it have?
In 2010, the A’s have a bunch of their young starters penciled into a rotation minus Duke and have Cunningham, Sweeney, Buck in the OF. To improve the team would mean trading for Hardy or taking playing time away from some of the A’s young talent. 2009 allows the A’s to improve their LF while allowing Cunningham to improve at AAA.
If trying to compete this year means rushing MACS, I can see your point though.

could have run DFA out there again
if we don’t wanna rush cunningham. or denorfia for that matter. i think the a’s would be in better position if they hadn’t gone for it this year because they have smith/street/gonzalez still, plus the (albeit small amount) of money spent this offseason.

You realize they'd still have had Carlos Gonzalez, right?
I don’t care how badly he hits, if he plays defense like he did last year.

i would agree
but it turned out fine because of the economic collapse, with free agents being so cheap that they were able to sign five of them.
really all the a’s gave up in order to compete was smith (not important), street (easily replaceable) and cargon (who knows).

They could have signed five free agents anyway, though
Actually, with the extra $$ from not having Holliday, they could either have put Furcal to bed with a knockout offer (significant upgrade on Cabrera) or signed multiple additional free agents (Joe Crede + Bobby Abreu? Crede and Adam Dunn, even? Randy Johnson?). I argue the team would only have been 1 or 2 games worse off next season anyway, and probably 2-3 games better in 2010.

Maybe you've convinced everyone else,
but I still don’t believe more money would have changed Furcal’s mind. He just didn’t want to play for the Oakland A’s.

Good Steve Steve Vucinich Interview

Talks about the throw backs we will wear this year and more players asking for sanitaries now.

who do we think made the request?
And one of our rookie pitchers just asked for ’em too.
Sock lesson!
The thing I love about stirrups is, last year we had a turn back the clock game — we went back to 1968, which was our sleeveless uniform, and I made everyone wear stirrups. And guys did not know how to wear ’em. "Is the big opening on the back or the front?" Honest to god. They had noooo clue.

Corey's socks are pure awesomeness.
Seeing him in those socks was worth giving up Matt Murton.
Heck, seeing him in those socks was worth giving up Rich Harden. Well, OK, not quite … but close!

Because the spelling "lede" (which appears in the Uni Watch article)...
…really bugs the hell out of me, I looked up an explanation of it. In case anyone else is interested.

Dear Ticketmaster,
I really like getting updates as to when my favorite bands are releasing tickets, adding new shows, etc. Today, however, I was disturbed to find a notice for DANE COOK in my inbox. I fear someone has hacked my Ticketbastard account and is ruining my decent reputation by purchasing tickets for shows like Carlos Mencia and Disney on Ice. I mean, that’s the only explanation, right?
I’ll let it slide this time, Ticketmaster, but only because you got me floor seats to REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Styx that one year, and I crapped my pants when the bass player for Styx played right! next! to! me!. You are warned.
Sincerely,
Jennifer, not a fan of Dane Cook
