Open Thread: Spring Training Game 5: A's at Diamondbacks

Two of the more intriguing stories in camp are possible "diamond in the rough" castoffs Jerome Williams and Edgar Gonzalez, who are trying to steal the #5 spot in the rotation from youngsters Josh Outman and Gio Gonzalez. Williams looked strong in his effort on Friday, and today E. Gonzalez takes the mound to start against his former team, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With a career 5.97 ERA, it's not hard to see why Arizona cut Gonzalez loose. He has been quite hitable, with a career BAA of .305 over 258 IP, but has generally thrown strikes (85 BB against 168 K). The competition for the #5 spot is strong, so Gonzalez will have to stand out to win that job, or even to earn the consolation prize of long reliever. He seems like a better candidate for the Kirk Saarloos, Brad Halsey, Lenny DiNardo role of "Sacramento starter ready for the call," but he'll try to move himself up on the depth chart throughout March.

The lineups:

Buck - LF
Sweeney - CF
Giambi - 1B
Cust - RF
Suzuki - C
Barton - DH
Crosby - SS
Hannahan - 3B
Patterson - 2B

Roberts - 2B
Upton - RF
Drew - SS
Jackson -  LF
Tracy - 1B
Reynolds - 3B
Clark - DH
Montero - C
Watson - CF

Should be interesting to see how Gonzalez does

Right now I have him fourth in the 5th starter race behind Gio, Outman, and Williams. I don’t think he has what it takes to be a starter at the MLB level.

Maybe he’ll prove me wrong though.

Local TV situation explained (sort of) on radio pregame show

If you have:

Comcast with a set-top digital box: You get CSN California (if you have at least expanded basic)

Comcast with the cable running directly from the wall to the TV: You need to call Comcast and ask for a DTA box (which will be free).

DirecTV: The explanation was that CSN California is presently available but on a non-basic tier. Comcast and DirecTV are in negotiations to move the channel to a basic tier. This is a different explanation than was in the Merc the other day which suggested that DirecTV was going to carry the channel but black out the game telecasts, pending further negotiations.

Dish and U-Verse: These services were not discussed.

by DyeLongJustice on Mar 1, 2009 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

The live stream won't be available during the regular season

MLB is much more flexible about streaming during spring training. But during the season all online audio and video streams are exclusive to MLB.com.

BTW there will be at least two A’s spring training games with free video webcasts: March 25 on whitesox.com and March 30 on dodgers.com.

by Soaker on Mar 1, 2009 2:59 PM PST up reply actions

This is true, BUT

You can often find affiliates who don’t cut their stream.

http://www.thegamelive.com/

That site has a list of stations (with links to their sites) for all the teams. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes not.

by thejd44 on Mar 1, 2009 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

Huh, interesting

I’ll have to try that during the regular season. That would be an error on the individual station’s part because MLB wants a monopoly on live online content.

In any case, if you had frequent use of this service, I would think that most people would not find the $14.95 for the full season subscription to be that much of an obstacle. I can see trying to find a free stream if you only needed to do it a few times each year.
