Jerry Blevins? ' the hell?
So it’s really more like a top 30 list…
I’d be interested to know what’s causing Pedro Figueroa to get these back-end-of-top-30 nods, since I can’t see anything in his performance that would suggest he has the slightest chance of making the majors.
I think the most interesting thing on here, apart perhaps from Pennington being inexplicably treated as a decent player, is that they have Tyson Ross ahead of Brett Hunter.

Agree, I was surprised, too.
He’s got oodles of potential but those mechanics are just plain ’orrible.
by NateHST on Feb 6, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, let's be fair...
Hunter’s mechanics are nothing to write home about either.
Both of ‘em are ticking time bombs… the A’s are just hoping one of them doesn’t go off until he hits free agency.

Hunter's mechanics are strange, to be sure,
but I think Ross’s are a bit more concerning. The inverted W has shoulder trouble written all over it. Hunter’s ridiculously long stride, on the other hand, probably just makes him a better fit as a max-effort reliever. I can’t remember where, but someone did a nice comparison of Hunter’s delivery to Carlos Marmol’s.

never occured to me that Blevins was eligible
Coleman being #22 and Christian being off the list completely is a bit of a surprise, I kind of figured they’d be bunched together like Carignan/Demel. Bailey and Desme are a bit higher than I would have figured too.

He's not eligible for RoY
For reasons known only to them, BA apparently does not limit prospect status based on service time.

Then how do they limit it? A full year of service?
Is it an age thing? Could Felix Hernandez still be considered a prospect because even though it seems like he’s been around for a decade he’s still like 16 years old?
by thejd44 on Feb 7, 2009 1:37 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
130 AB or 50 IP. Sickels does the same thing. Service time is a pain to figure out and you
don’t exclude too many guys by doing it.

I thought Sickels based it on being ROY eligible
And Blevins isn’t, I don’t think. If he is, he definitely should be somewhere on all these lists.

re: thejd44
thejd44, Waddell is correct. The qualification for prospect status is anyone who has no more than 50 innings pitched or 130 at-bats in the big leagues. Age is not a consideration for eligibility.

I actually have a huge gripe with the age thing
Since, basically by definition of “prospect,” there needs to be some sort of age cut-off.
But it seems odd if they’re going for 50 innings/130 ABs that Sickels wouldn’t have Blevins listed anywhere.
by thejd44 on Feb 9, 2009 12:15 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well it would be pretty telling if you had some 35 yo guys on your prospect list anyway.

by WaddellCanseco on Feb 9, 2009 8:05 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why does there need to be a cutoff? Age is already factored into a player's value.
The only thing a strict age cutoff could possibly do is make the lists worse.

Yeah, a guy who is in the middle of proving himself
doing nothing less – and more – than he’s been asked, is #20 behind guys who’ve never set foot in the coliseum. And Blevins behind Cliff “Chad” Pennington? Um, ok…maybe I just don’t get it.

Zonis ??? for you
If you used Sickels grades but made them numbers along w BA, Scout, AN, and whatever other list you had could you get a combined top prospects lists together?
I would be intersted how that shook out.
by Bud Light on Feb 6, 2009 7:23 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The problem with that
Is that while Sickels does rank players numerically, he specifically says not to pay much attention to that and it’s the letter grades that matter. I don’t think he puts nearly as much thought into the order as the individual player grade. IMO, this is the right move because it’s far more beneficial to know a grade – a ranking among all prospects + a sort of meta-prospect standard – than it is to know how they rank within the same system (especially since if they all play different positions, their ranking doesn’t make a difference since they can all succeed at the same time and to the same extent).

If Blevins is eligible, he should be higher
I’d be happy if Outman, Ross, or Rodriguez are ever as good as Blevins is now.

That's kind of a weird statement since I think Outman projects as an average-ish starter
Which is more valuable than a pretty good, but not great, reliever.
by thejd44 on Feb 8, 2009 12:39 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't see Outman as an average starter,
given his control and the straighth of his fastball. Out of the bullpen, he can at least throw a little harder and use his breaking stuff better against lefties (by facing a more lefty-heavy portion of the lineup).

I Went to a Baseball Game Yesterday
Every year, TCU has a pre-season game between the Horned Frogs and an alumni team. The alumni team is a mix of fat, old guys and minor-leaguers.
The point being, Sam Demel closed the game. OK, it is really early and Papago Park is a month away, but he was throwing easy at 92 and struck out TCU’s big lefty clean-up slugger with a sharp slider at the knees.
Lance Broadway (competing for the Chicago White Sox rotation) looked good for two innings with nice control.
Jake Arrieta (#4 prospect for the Orioles) also pitched two nice innings. It seemed every single batter popped up against his high four-seam fastball.
Anyway, it was a beautiful 70 degrees under blue skies and a great way to start another baseball season. I am SO glad winter is almost over. Play ball!
