DLD? - 2/26/2009 , Better late than never? Rickey!

I have never done a DLD but I have a link that I want to post and there isn't anywhere to put it, so here it goes.

Rickey Henderson was on the Mike and Mike show and they asked him about some of the famous stories that are told about him.

once proud franchise?

San Jose Makes First Pitch to Draw A’s South

Now San Jose is stepping up to the plate and making a pitch for the once proud franchise. On Thursday, three San Jose council members asked that the city council discuss a strategy for negotiating with the A’s and Major League Baseball about building a stadium in San Jose.

Council members Nora Campos, Nancy Pyle and Rose Herrera sent a memo to the city’s Rules and Open Government Committee asking them to add the stadium discussion to the council’s March 24 meeting.

The members asked the commission to conduct “a poll to determine citywide public support for the project” and to report back to the council within 45 days.
The memo goes on to identify one location in downtown San Jose as a potential stadium site.

“The Redevelopment Agency owns most of the 14-acre project site next to downtown Diridon Station and the EIR has been completed,” it reads.

So they just need to DRAW the A's in the South Bay,

and they’ll be there? Like Harold and the Purple Crayon? Only green?

...then Pennington takes over.

That's exactly where I was thinking the A's could build a potential new stadium

See? San Jose is already all over that action like a stripper at a frat boy party!

it would be an ideal location, with two highways and both caltrain and amtrak, and in the future possibly bart and high-speed rail.
but is there enough land available?

The memo goes on to identify one location in downtown San Jose as a potential stadium site.
"The Redevelopment Agency owns most of the 14-acre project site next to downtown Diridon Station and the EIR has been completed," it reads.
Wolff has identified several sites for a potential stadium for his soccer team, including a site located at 1125 Coleman Ave. in San Jose that totals 74.8 acres. Several experts have deemed that site too small for a baseball stadium.

I don't know.

It seemed kinda like Mike and Mike were clowning Rickey. I’ve loved Rickey since 1979, and I’d welcome him back on our team in any capacity, so I feel I’ve earned the right to clown him a little. But that felt wrong to me. Maybe I should stop clowning him too. I really do feel that he was the best baseball player of the last thirty years.

Nomar deciding between A’s and retirement

Free-agent infielder Nomar Garciaparra is choosing between retirement and a one-year contract with the Oakland A’s, major-league sources say.

The Phillies, the other team pursuing Garciaparra, are "fairly certain" that they will not sign him, according to a source with knowledge of the club’s thinking.

The A’s, meanwhile, could increase their pursuits of free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera and left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes due to their uncertainty over Garciaparra, another source said.

from that article

evidently the $25M for the first year is structured so the Dodgers would pay just $10M this year and the remaining $15M over several years (I didn’t see anything about how the $20M for year 2 is structured). I’m not shedding tears for Manny over this, but I’m curious about how common this sort of deferred payment plan is in baseball contracts.

by colin on Feb 27, 2009 7:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not a Boras fan by any means

but the way that the Dodgers’ offer is structured doesn’t look — relatively speaking, of course – like a deal that Manny should jump on. From what I’m reading on mlbtraderumors.com it has not been rejected outright, but there is a counterproposal that mainly deals with the way deferred payments are proposed.

by OaklandSi on Feb 27, 2009 9:53 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

As I understand it...

…Boras/Manny are agreeable to the dollar amounts, but reject the deferred (with no interest) aspect. Allegedly they’ll accept if none of the money is deferred.

On the one hand, it’s not like Manny is destitute and needs the money to feed his family right now. On the other hand, I’m sure he’d prefer to invest it himself so he can make even more money.

I could prove God statistically. Take the human body alone - the chances that all the functions of an individual would just happen is a statistical monstrosity.

+15,000,000 now

then you have to put a little sticky on your computer to remind yourself to come back in a year for another +15,000,000 and then +10,000,000 in 2011 and another +5,000,000 in 2012.

This deal, by the way, is almost done. It’s all posturing at this point; the differences are immaterial in the world of baseball stars, unless of course boras and manny really DO have a team waiting in the wings.

I think it would be great if the A's could score Nomar foe this year.

He adds another premium vet presence in the dugout. I wonder what the deciding factor is for him? It can’t really be money cuz he’s made plenty of it so another million or so is kind of just extra change for him. Still, I’d like it if he was with the A’s for one very interesting 2009 season.

Slusser comments on the BP rating of A's prospects

Baseball Prospectus notes that the A’s system is so remarkably deep in talent, that there are a total of about 18 players in the system who would rank as Houston’s second-best prospect overall.

as it is directly taking from the BP article itself, as I just found:
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8551

If you’re looking for some real perspective: after the sixth through eleventh spots, as well as the three who “just missed,” there are another four players who one could arguably rank as the second-best prospect in the entire Houston Astros’ system.

Good job there SuSlu.

Oakland resumes talks with the A's

From SF Business times, the story notes

With Fremont out of the running for the new A’s stadium, the City of Oakland is resuming negotiations to keep the team in its hometown, recently installed city administrator, Dan Lindheim, said Friday.

Lindheim did not specify where a possible A’s stadium could go.

A 2001 report commissioned by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum identified several possible Oakland sites for a new A’s stadium, including:

Howard Terminal, a waterfront site west of Jack London Square;
Oak to Ninth, which has since become the proposed site of a large housing development;
Laney College, a Lake Merritt site that had been favored by Bobb;
the Uptown area, which has been largely redeveloped since then; and
the parking lot at McAfee Coliseum, where the A’s have played since 1968.
Lindheim spoke at a luncheon that was hosted by several Oakland chambers of commerce held at the downtown Marriott Hotel. He also mentioned the city is taking an active stance on maintaining the Oakland Raiders football franchise in town.

"We are getting together with (team representatives) in a few weeks," Lindheim said. "We’re not asleep on the job on either of those sports teams."

Laney College

When they call Laney College a ballpark site, what exactly do they have in mind? Are they going to close the college and plow down the buildings, or are they going to fit the stadium somewhere in the park by the channel?

Laney College fields at E. 10th and 5th Ave

Baseball field adjacent to the Lake Merritt Channel, between the Lake and the 880. The idea is that Laney would retain some rights to us the new facility for its needs as part of the deal. Previously the Peralta Colleges (of which Laney is one) were cool to the idea, but that was before the tenure of current Chancellor Elihu Harris (ex-Mayor of Oakland)

getting back to the micheal lewis article on the secret genius of shane battier, did you see that in the midst of handing the cavs a beating last night, battier handed lebron his career-first no assist game.

Elway was good

but he’s not even close to the greatest quarterback of all time. He was frankly bad for his first several years. His prime wasn’t as good as Steve Young’s. His stats aren’t on a par with Unitas or Marino or Starr, not to mention Manning or Brady. He doesn’t have the Super Bowl credentials of most of those guys, either, much less Montana’s.

[I can’t believe I’m going into football stats on a baseball site, but I’m pretty hard up for finding discussion topics here all of a sudden. Holy crap but this site got boring once spring games started.]

Or the regular season stats of dan marino

I think people get too excited about elway because, like me, they see (saw) his physical talents. It’s possible that he was the most gifted pure passer ever, with unmatched velocity and accuracy plus top tier mobility. I think his coaching and surrounding crew improved greatly along with him, so I forgive him the early years.

Elway’s achievements do IMO put him in the conversation about the greatest ever, but, as you note, you can’t argue on the stats that he was the best, and manning and brady are not even done. And terry bradshaw, johnny unitas, bart starr and fran tarkenton would all have something to say as well.

Football’s not baseball, and individual stats are not as important, but, much as I was an elway fan since he was a freshman at stanford, I can’t call him the best ever. One of the top 5, probably. But not #1.

As a life-long Broncos fan

I grudgingly agree with you that he’s likely not the best of all time, but likely in the top 5. But to say in his prime he wasn’t as good as, say, Steve Young, I cannot, will not, agree with.

And to say he’s not in the conversation without T.D. I also don’t see. “Winning it all” is so team/coaching dependent, and I’d give him major points for carrying them to 3 super bowls early on with teams that were nothing to write home about. Admittedly they got blown out in each, but he carried them there.

Have you looked at how good Steve Young's prime years were?

His 1992-1994 period is the best 3-year stretch by any quarterback in the history of the NFL.

And hey, I'm a Raiders fan

It took me a LOT to even put elway in the top 5.

And, to be clear, it was someone else who said steve young was as good. I’d put young top 10 but not top 5. I’d also guess that everyone in the top 5 had lots of top rate supporting players.

A more interesting question for this group might be: where would you rank Kenny Stabler on the list of qb’s? (he’s my all time favorite, but I’d have a hard time putting him in the top 10 . . . )

QB is the one position in all of professional sports where i place more value on finals appearances than stats.
and like i said, elway never had a great team around him. he had mediocre coaches as well.

I'm not going to argue that Lombardi was a mediocre coach

although he is a bit overrated, but… have you seen the talent the Packers had on their second Super Bowl team? Their offense was pretty much Bart Starr and the Ten Dwarves.

As for finals appearances, Starr was 5 for 6, Elway 2 for 5…

It's a team game.

Elway’s not even in that discussion without Terrell Davis

elway got to 3 super bowls without davis

he didn’t win any of those, but the AFC was really weak at that time and elway’s best WR was vance johnson, who barely cracked 1,000 yards in his BEST season.

You were arguing that

Montana was a product of his system. My point was they all are. It’s a team sport.

right but the west coast offense makes QBs with montana-like arms look a lot better than they would otherwise.
meanwhile elway had dan reeves.

The reeves point is a big one IMO

Early on, I think the difference between marino and elway was the difference between shula and reeves. Over time, reeves became a very good head coach; I don’t think he ever became a great quarterback coach. Shula knew how to coach a great QB from the start.

However, that doesn’t mean we can say elway was better than marino – he wasn’t. Every player is in part a product of the coach and the system, but the player is responsible for what he does on the field.

Funny note

From Susan Slusser in the Chronicle:

Rollie Finger? Left-hander Dallas Braden, who is starting today against the Indians, has a handlebar mustache, a la Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers, the A’s great closer.

Braden’s handlebar, however, is tattooed onto the side of one of his fingers. When he raises the finger to his face, voila! Small, neat little curlicues, without all the hassle of mustache wax.

“I got bored the other day and went to the tattoo parlor,” Braden said with a grin. “It’s something funny, something lighthearted. It’s definitely a conversation piece.”

Braden is trying to give a name to what he describes as his “alter ego.” Justin Duchscherer has suggested “Pepe,” but Braden was kicking around some royal titles to accompany his mustachioed side.

Speaking of SuSlu, any word on if her book is coming out this spring?!
