Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Springer_20fb_2008_20google-thumb-600x559-8787

From my latest post on Russ Springer.
A full explanation on how the picture was derived is in the article, but the main takeaway is how many shallow fly balls Springer induced besides just the infield fly balls that you'll find on a site like Fangraphs.

I really think

you should Fanpost your entire blog post. This is front page worthy (again). Great work!

Very cool.

Any chance you could annotate which of those were HRs in whichever parks he pitched in last year?

Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.

Sal, the HR labeled were the HR that were hit last year

Like the HR hit farthest to the left in the picture I don’t think would’ve been a homer at McAfee

Does that mean

that there would have been 6 additional HRs if he had only pitched in the Coliseum last year?

I was all countin’ warning track and whatever that thing is in CF…

Another great post

do you have a sense of a typical distribution of those dots might be?

Very good question mikeA

Unfortunately I have no idea what a typical distribution of this type looks like. I’m not exactly sure how I’d go about finding out, but it’s something worth figuring out. Thanks for the suggestion.

he HR I marked on the chart were the 3 flyball HR’s he allowed last year

i only see two, both in LF. where is the third one?

It's quite faded

But it’s to the right and down from the two balls in right field.

This is great, thanks!

Would it be hard to add 2006 and 2007 data?

Then using the example from the Joseph Adler’s Baseball Hacks book I inverted the y axis and plotted the baseball diamond black box in the picture.

I bought that book last year with some big plans, but I’ve yet to open it. If it helps you do work like this, I should probably get on it.

It probably wouldn't be too hard to add the 06-07 data

I guess this isn’t really pitchf/x stuff but rather gameday data, so it’s possible it might go back even further?

Maybe I’ll get around to perusing mlb.com’s gameday ftp site sometime tomorrow night.
