AN's own Brad Ziegler Named to Team USA
According to Susan Slusser, Brad Ziegler has been named to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. Damn and here I was all prepared to not care about this thing. USA, USA, USA!!!! Go Ziggy and Congrats!!!!

"AN's own??"
I need to know if using “we” is acceptable when referring to Team USA, now.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
Not sure if you were around back when Brad Ziegler was a frequent poster on AN.
Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.
I thought this was funny, anyway
m*****f***ing c***s***ing peanut butter and jelly!! f*** f*** f***!!!
Awesome
Congrats and good luck, Ziggy.

Whilst I'm delighted for Ziggy...
taking his spring training out of the control of the A’s leaves me feeling uncomfortable.
I don’t really see that it will add to his preparation, but can easily imagine it taking away.
Good Luck (and fingers crossed).

2 weeks away from the A's trainers?
Woo hoo!!!!

Maybe as a Brit I don't view the WBC in the way that those from involved nations may do?
But given the choice between seeing Team USA (or any other WBC team involving an A’s player) lifting a trophy, or the A’s lifting one, even if no more than being AL west champions, it’s the A’s every time for me.
Jump ahead 20 years to some future Hall of Famer TV documentary, and I just don’t see their WBC appearances, or number of WBC rings, being listed and lauded amongst their other career Stats.
Spring Training is the foundation upon which seasons are built. The A’s coaches know Ziggy and will prepare him for April to Sept (Oct) rather than just March. Huston Streets underuse in the last WBC certainly didn’t help his season.
If we’re going to try to lead the AL West, we need to avoid leading the “DL West” yet again. Not messing with their/his ST is a great way to help with that.

I bleed green & gold, not red white & blue...
so I’d prefer to see him stay with the team in Phoenix…
But this sounds like it’s his bag, and I hope he has a lot of fun and doesn’t get hurt.

hmmmmm, I'll be in London on those days
I wonder if there will be a pub showing the games. Probably not…..
There's no crying in baseball!
Sadly No.

Whoo hooo!!
It’s incredibly cook that Ziggy has earned himself a spot on the national team, given how hard he’s worked, from unaffiliated A-ball, to switching to his submarine delivery.
Blez, can you ask Ziggy about blogging his Team USA experience?
Hey, Ziggy, please blog your Team USA experience!
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Uhh, "cook" = "cool"
Although “cook” might not be a bad term, come to think of it.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
You should try to make that happen.
Like “fetch.”
Ray: "How fun is it to be up here playing in the Big Leagues?"
Gio: "It's *SUPER* fun!!!"
I like what Ichiro had to say
"I’ve been thinking about it since the season ended last year," Ichiro Suzuki said recently. "This tournament is exactly what baseball needs. It was long overdue. In my mind, the W.B.C. is absolutely not something you approach with the mind-set that it’s just an exhilarating way to prepare for the regular season. This is a bona fide competition to decide who is the best among the world’s professionals. I feel a great responsibility to help nurture this tournament into an important piece of baseball’s fabric for future generations."

It's nice, but I disagree
The majority of the world’s best professionals are already playing in MLB.
"I’m Joey Devine, I’m what Joba Chamberlain would be if he was good and nobody had ever heard of him."
I thought America was the entire world
Go figure.

Good for Ziggy!
And I echo the cries for him to blog the experience.
I like important stuff just as much as the next guy, but please, for a little while, deliver us from meaning, baseball. That's your greatest glory, and we thank you for it very, very much. -- Craig Calcaterra
I too am excited, but
what’s with the weird look of this story on the front page? The all-block-frame look is odd.

I don't mean to be a party pooper...
but I HATE the WBC. I think it’s a preseason all star game invented by Bud and the owners to make more money for baseball. And more importantly, I’m worried it’s going to do to Ziggy what it did to Huston two years ago. I recall suckitude with dead arm. Not good. Don’t go, Ziggy!

I doubt someone who pitches like Ziggy does is going to need to worry about dead arm.

interesting point, that
if it’s true, why doesn’t everyone pitch like that? i’d have thought a lower stress delivery mechanism that is equally as effective would become instantly popular, no?
am i missing something?

If everyone pitched like that, hitters would adjust and render them worthless

I think it's more that pitching well like that isn't especially easy
Kind of like switch-hitting.

is it not easy because kids aren't taught to do it
or that it’s inherently difficult?
i mean, i know ssome of the advantage gained is from the different release point, but i’m sure it’s not a totally worthless pitching motion.

Vamos Mexico!!!
Here to Adrian Gonzales and Mexico eliminating you Americans again haha!
Clear its radiance shine...
That actually kind of annoyed me
watching Mexican baseball players blowing kisses to the crowd when their team had already been eliminated anyway.. come on, behave professionally.

Ugh
Good for Brad, I guess, but crappy for the A’s. I’m sure glad the A’s have built plenty of bullpen depth this offseason.

I don't see why the WBC would harm Ziggy physically
He’d be throwing anyway, and he doesn’t tax his arm that much when he pitches. If he’s used a bit more or less than he would have been in Phoenix, Geren says he’ll adjust accordingly upon Ziggy’s return to the Cactus League.
I’m glad Devine isn’t going, but I think Ziggy is the perfect candidate from an A’s perspective.

Good Luck to Brad and all...
but I always hate to see A’s players take the filed(or mound) in the WBC. It’d be a shame for Brad if he injured his arm…at this early stage in his MLB career.
