NEW TV DEAL

Reported tonight by Susan Slusser, the A's have officially bolted CSGiants for the Sacto CSN. Apparently the station will be on Comcast 89 (in memory of that WS sweep) and will air alternate programming during Kings games. The move will allow for more HD (no more KICU?) and more extensive pre- and post-game coverage. Should be pretty cool. Love to hear your thoughts AN

Wait.

Every Bay Area broadcast and satellite service will receive the 147 games, I’m told, except possibly Astound, a cable service in Walnut Creek.

I have DirecTV, so I’ll get those 147 games, right?

It's pretty fantastic.

Not that ATT is much better than Comcast is, ethically, but still… any dollar I don’t give to Comcast is well spent.

Looking forward to

All of those games! Not living in the Bay Area, it’s going to be nice to watch the games from over here in the Valley.

Now the A's just need to convert Raley field into their new stadium.

Or purchase the area that is “Cal Expo”. That would be a dream come true for me.

CSNet

I have the limited basic cable (14 dollars a month) and I called comcast to see if I could add only CSNet and they said I would have to upgrade to basic cable (55 dollars a month). So for one channel costs me 40 dollars more a month. I love the watching the A’s, but I’ll stick with listening to them for free. Needless to say I’m still upset and wishing I had more money.

For approximately 24 hours following each game, Comcast SportsNet California’s Athletics telecasts will be available on Comcast Digital Cable’s ON DEMAND Channel 1 at no additional cost. Select Athletics HDTV games will also be available ON DEMAND Channel 1.
SWEET! I don’t have a DVR so this is awesome. i can watch the game later if I miss it, like when my wife forces me to watch Gossip Girl, UGH!

Prior to the start of the regular season, Comcast SportsNet California will present Cactus League action from Phoenix Municipal Stadium, when the Athletics take on the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m. In addition, the telecast schedule features a contest from the annual Bay Bridge Series as the Athletics play on the road against the Giants on Thursday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m.

KICU and CSN California HD

KICU (Channel 36) was out of the picture months ago. It will be interesting to see how CSN California handles overlapping Kings and A’s games… will the Kings games always be in HD (Sacto and Central Valley only) and the A’s games always be in standard-def? The answer might lie in their production and switching facilities. Though CSN Bay Area usually handled overlapping A’s and Giants games by putting the home team on HD, that wasn’t going to last as production and switching costs for HD broadcasts decline, so I’m glad the A’s got out from under the Giants while the getting was good.

by muscatel on Feb 12, 2009 4:43 PM PST reply actions

How often will Kings and A's games actually overlap?

It has to be like 5 times a season at most.

Looking at their schedules, they’ll play on the same time slot on April 7th, 9th, 10th, and 13th. On April 12th and 15th, they’re both playing, but the A’s will start earlier than the Kings.

Damn. 5 times a season at most was a pretty solid guess.

It's not just that, though

I doubt all the A’s games were going to be in HD anyway. I suspect the actual problem of “potentially overlapping HD telecasts” is more like 2 or 3 times a season. Pretty easy to work around.

ON DEMAND has a price... no zapping

Comcast’s ON DEMAND does not support commercial zapping… the maximum forward speed for these telecasts is a lazy two arrows… this compares to the five arrow speed supported for programs recorded by Comcast’s DVRs.

true

but I don’t want to pay the extra $10 (or $15?, whatever) for the DVR.

Yes you do

You just don’t know it yet. Think of it as buying parts of your life back (10-15 minutes per hour of tv show, significantly more per sporting event)

A's go 100% cable/satellite

I’m sure I’m not the only A’s fan who doesn’t have cable, but I’m probably the only fan who posts here who doesn’t… so my opinion is once again unique and, undoubtedly, stupid.

Just another “Fuck You” to the fans from MLB.

I know how you feel Brian

when I was a kid (20 years ago) my family did not even have basic tv (my Dad did not like it, plus money was tight). Finally when I was a teenager (10 years ago) we got an antenna and we got like 6 channels. Luckily one of those was KICU and i could watch A’s games every once and a while. I remember going to my cousins house when no-one was home just to watch opening day against Baltimore. When I finally moved out and got married I got cable. Of course I still can’t watch a game whenever I want but that is because of the wife :-) And after all that pain my Dad caused me by not letting us have TV, he went and got Dish Network after all the kids moved out!

If I did not have cable I would be pissed at this new TV deal.

I don't have cable either

I pay for the MLB.tv package but I’ll get blacked out of live home games I think. I can watch them after they’re over (which is a better deal than my NBA internet package; there if a game is blacked out live you can’t even watch it on archive) but mostly I’ll listen on the radio.

No, you're not the only

yeah, that sucks for people who don’t have cable.
what percentage of the population in the bay area is in that category, though?

This is really great news. I love what they're doing with the broadcasts this year.

It could be better of course, e.g. on stronger radio stations, but that should come in good time as the team gains popularity.

I'm a little confused by the programming change.

How does this affect DirecTV subscribers?

by alox on Feb 13, 2009 1:13 PM PST reply actions

I've been looking into this as a prospective DirecTV customer

You’ll need to go to the DirecTV website to be certain exactly how this applies to you. If you receive CSN California as a “local regional sports network” as part of your subscription, and you are within the A’s MLB-designated territory, you should continue to receive the A’s games; they will just move from 696 to 698.

As I recall you live in Fresno. It’s a good city to work with because it’s not near any pro sports teams but it lies within several teams’ territories. I checked out zip code 93701 as an example. Both CSN-BA and CSN-CA are local channels in your area. You have received the A’s, Giants, Warriors and Sharks on 696 and the Kings on 698, without needing to subscribe to the “Sports Pack”. Nothing will change except that the A’s will be on 698 instead of 696.

You are also within the Lakers and Clippers NBA-designated territories, but the Southern California FSN channels are not local for you in Fresno. You can see the Lakers on FSN West (692) and the Clippers on FSN Prime Ticket (694) without having to buy NBA League Pass; however, you do need to buy DirecTV’s Sports Pack to receive those channels.

Yet another “but”: The NBA’s territories differ from MLB’s. So, even if you buy the Sports Pack, you will find that Dodgers and Angels games are blacked out on 692 and 694, because Fresno is not within MLB’s Dodger/Angel territory. You would need to buy MLB Extra Innings from DirecTV to see the Dodgers and Angels telecasts.

Another example: I checked out a city which lies at the fringe of A’s territory: Bend, Oregon. Those folks have no regional sports networks as part of their local package. However, Bend lies within the MLB territories of the A’s, the Giants and the Mariners. So Bend subscribers can see telecasts of any of those three teams by buying the Sports Pack. However, if they want to see the local telecasts of other MLB teams, any NBA or NHL team, they need to buy MLB Extra Innings, NBA League Pass or NHL Center Ice.

by Soaker on Feb 13, 2009 2:02 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm, I may have erred about Bend

Rechecking, it looks like they get CSN Bay Area and FSN Northwest as local RSNs. CSN California is not listed as a local RSN there at this time. I suppose that is something that might be changed with the A’s switch.

Bottom line is, there are two questions:
1) Are you within the professional team’s league-designated territory?
2) Do you receive the RSN that carries their games as a local channel?

If yes to both in the case of the A’s, you should get their games as part of your basic subscription.
If yes to the first but no to the second, you should be able to see the A’s by buying the Sports Pack.
If no to the first, you need MLB Extra Innings to see the A’s telecasts.

by Soaker on Feb 13, 2009 2:19 PM PST up reply actions

Just to put a final thought on this

If you’re in the situation where you live within the A’s MLB territory but are not seeing CSN California as a local regional sports network on the DirecTV site, I would not rush out to buy the Sports Pack right away. I would guess and assume that due to the switch, DirecTV will expand the local availability of CSN California to most or all of the A’s territory. Give them a chance to digest the changes and check back again as the start of the season nears.

by Soaker on Feb 13, 2009 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

Wow.

Thanks a ton for the information. It’s really helpful. My area has the A’s and Giants as “local” with the Angels and Dodgers blacked out. I subscribe to the EI package because my wife follows the Yankee’s. So if I’m understanding you correctly, then I will continue to receive the A’s games, albeit on another channel.

Again, thanks a lot!
