Scutaro Signs with the Red Sox

My worst nightmare has become a reality.

This sucks. This makes me sad. This is horrible. I would rather watch every raider game on repeat for a week staight than have this happen. Of all the teams he could have gone to. I would rather see him on the yankees. I hate the red sox. This makes me have to boo him. Wtf. What is the world coming to. I hate baseball. I hate the Red Sox. I hate Francona. I hate Pedroia. I hate every one of those dousches. I am going to have to burn my scutaro shirt. Balls.

Come on, this isn’t nearly as bad. It really isn’t. It really, really, really isn’t.

I thought he was saying that Scutaro going to the Red Sox wasn't as bad...

It’s quite the ambiguous sentence, isn’t it.

[Watching the Raiders is a bazillion times worse, though… the Red Sox actually play competent baseball… it’s not a continual eyesore like the Raiders…]

FRIDAY, 9:08am: ESPN’s Buster Olney has the terms on Scutaro: $1MM signing bonus, $5MM in 2010, $5MM in 2011, and a 2012 option with a $6MM club option, $3MM player option, and $1.5MM buyout. That makes it a two-year, $12.5MM deal – less than I thought he’d receive.

This “not getting involved in free agents” notion is getting unbelievably silly. All these guys are signing for easily affordable sums.

And don’t give me this bullshit about them only wanting to sign with contenders. That’s ludicrous. The only reason they might prefer a contender is because your offer is even more shortsightedly parsimonious than theirs is.

by iglew on Dec 4, 2009 8:50 PM PST up reply actions

PT, I have to agree with you.

This is really getting silly.

First the A’s don’t manage to get involved in the flurry of trades at the beginning of the offseason, when players like Hardy and Iwamura, who could’ve helped shore up the left side of the infield for reasonable cost in prospects, are dealt.

Then they stand fairly pat while Polanco is signed to a reasonable deal as a FA, and let Boston get Scutaro for a very reasonable price as well (though at least it sounds like they might’ve tried to get Scutaro with a last-minute slight outbid.) Meanwhile, the Mariners are apparently about to sign Figgins to a pretty reasonable-sounding deal as well.

What gives? No way they couldn’t afford to get one or more of these players, in terms of either/both salary and/or prospect cost, to improve the team for 2010 and at least 2011 if not beyond. Seems like somebody’s asleep at the wheel… and if Aaron Miles and the rumored Jamey Carroll (oh, and McPherson, who has played how many games in the past 3 years?) are the supposed solutions this offseason then the best solution for A’s fans is probably to avoid watching any games in 2010.

by still bills kingdom on Dec 4, 2009 10:05 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe none of the good FAs want to sign with Oakland.

I’m so tired of every time any player signs with another team having to hear that Billy was too cheap. News flash, everyone: Oakland is not a top choice for most big-name players.

Wow, he turned down more cash from A's.

Scutaro inked a two-year deal with Boston on Friday that contains $12.5 million in guaranteed money and another $3-6 million in option money for 2012. Oakland offered him “slightly” more, according to Rosenthal’s sources, but the 34-year-old shortstop liked the idea of playing in Boston and for a contender.

Good for him

Turns out the idea of playing in front of large crowds in a bandbox with the likelihood of going to the post-season is more appealing to Marco Scutaro than getting a slightly larger paycheck.

Sucks for us, though. And what it says is that Beane isn’t satisfied with a Pennington-Miles shortstop combo.

Doesn't make sense

This is 1 rumor i don’t believe that the A’s offered Scutaro more money. Didn’t Beane just say the A’s were not going to sign FA. Did he blow smoke up somebody’s ass? Sounds like Beane just blew some over to Rosenthal. Also Rosenthal is saying the A’s have money to spend.

One key point

I read that Beane was looking at Jamey Carrol for third. The red sox were also looking at him. Did Billy play Boston into speeding up the Scutaro offer so Boston would sign Scutaro so the A’s will sign Carrol? Only time will tll but if carrol signs with the A’s it will make you wonder.

They are most obnoxious, annoying, stupid, and fair-weather fans on the Planet. Please go to an A’s/red sox game. Yeah, most of the actual players seem pretty cool

Wakefield is cool because he throws the knuckler, Matsuzaka is cool because he’s a cultural fish out of water, Lester is kind of a feel-good story, Okajima has that bizarro-world delivery. David Ortiz is like a giant huggable bear. Even Youkilis has that Funny Out of Shape Midwestern White Guy vibe going for him.

There are very few actual hateable players on the Red Sox (I’ll give you Papelbon, but that’s about it— and really, most closers are douchebags when you get right down to it). The fans are a completely different story of course…

Not a horrible trade really....

Sure, Marco had a nice 2009, but no one was predicting that kind of production for him at 33. Will that continue, or will he drop back to his career averages of .265/.337/.384, or less? I love the guy, and was sorry to see him go, but bringing him back for $5 million+ a year probably would have backfired anyway. I much prefer younger/cheaper (and potentially better) options as starters, and certainly can’t see spending that kind of dough for a utility guy.

By the way, Godfrey had a nice season as a starter in AA (11-8, 3.50 ERA, 1.28 WHIP). It’ll be interesting to see if he makes the jump to AAA. Bell looks like he’s about done — he can’t seem to pitch (well) above single-A.

In what way did it "come back to bite them in the ass"?

He was traded. He became a free agent. He is now NOT playing for the team he was traded to.

Toronto got some draft picks, but they probably spent as much as those picks are worth paying Scutaro’s salary in the last two years.

let me count the ways

the team lost a fan favorite player, affecting attendance (well, maybe the attendance part)

he had an OK 2008 season and a good season in 09 at the plate.

Donnie Murphy, Scutaro’s “replacement” was a FAIL

He would have been an improvement over Crosby and Hannahan.

Wouldn’t the A’s have benifitted from having him in the infield the last two years? Who knows, if he had stayed on the team and had a career year in 09 maybe he re-signs with the A’s? Maybe he would do the same thing and sign with a contender but the chances would be greater if he never was traded IMO.

I guess I’m assuming that the trade affected his desire to sign with the A’s this year. But there is no way to prove that and it probably has little to do with it. Besides factoring the pressure of being in Boston it was a smart choice on Marco’s part.
