DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so happy right now. My irrational love for Justin Duchscherer, combined with the fact that he has been, both as a reliever and as a starter, an All-Star level pitcher, makes me weep at the thought of losing Duke and makes me do my happy dance at the news that apparently, Duchscherer and the A's have reached an agreement in principle for Duke to return to Oakland one a one-year deal worth up to $5.5million.
Merry Dukemas!!!!!!!!

I like the Duke of Hurl
because it sounds like a nickname which might’ve been coined by some ink-stained wretch from an era when nicknames were more widespread and colorful.

IIRC, Duke used to complain that pitching out of the bullpen made
him peptic and difficile due to the anxiety of not knowing when he would get the call, so this nickname is very fitting I think.

That's the second time I've seen that
misspelling on AN. I mention it not to correct or to criticize, but only because I find it fascinating how idioms will reinvent themselves to keep up with technology.
Back in the dark ages, before iTunes and playlists, we did not queue our music. The music was played by a band, and the bandleader would give the musicians a cue so that they’d all know when to start. So whereas now you might very well queue the background music, when the idiom originated you would always cue it.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
I actually do realize it in the strictest sense
But since I have that song on MP3, it was more appropriate to say I queued it up (as in putting it into my playlist).
Nevertheless, Lawrence Welk would be proud that you remembered him. And-ah one, and-ah two…

is it just me,
or is this offseason vaguely similar to the last one. the only thing we haven’t done yet is trade away good players for a superstar for half a season. other than that though, a lot of f.a. signings and trades. hmm so much for a quiet offseason.
BUT DUKE!!!!! yay
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
This just made my freaking Christmas.
Only a couple days ago I had resigned myself to losing Duke, but this makes me so happy.
This also should speak volumes about this organization. Frankly, I really thought that he was going to move on with everything he had dealt with, that he would want to get a fresh start and be somewhere else. But this shows how comfortable he is in this environment, that the A’s handled his situation with care and showed that they take a vested interest in the livelihood of one of their own.
I look for Duke to be scary good next year…

I never realized that line was Seinfeldian.
Ugh, now I feel dirty for having used it so many times.

great episode
in which that line was repeatedly used when straight men (primarily Jerry) were mistaken for gay and were trying to avoid that label without seeming homophobic. It perfectly captured the unease of many liberal men who are horrified either by being thought gay or by being thought homophobic, which is why it’s reached “classic” status.
I'm really curious if Beltre is in reach...
He is rapidly losing suitors, what with Derosa now likely going to SF, and the BoSox seemingly out of the race.
If we were able to sign him to a 2-3 year at $7-9MM/yr. I would be ecstatic with this offseason…

The Giants are so stupid
They’re going to lock themselves into 2 years of a 35 year old who just had wrist surgery, and Derek Lee is a free agent next year. Morons.
Or they could just get LaRoche and leave Panda at 3B
Not really much different from having DeRosa play there.

Knowing Sabean they probably get both
put DeRosa in the OF, and LaRoche at 1B. Since their OF right now looks like Lewis-Rowand-Schierholtz.
And they don’t play good enough collective defense to be a “3 CF” OF we’ve seen popping around but they don’t hit either.
Or trade Panda for a veteran outfielder. and put DeRosa at 3B and LaRoche at 1B.
If the Giants are smart enough to get Matt Holliday, that would be awesome though.

Lewis in LF? Do we not have 6 mediocre outfielders better than Fred Lewis?
"Not in your wildest alcoholic nightmare would you ever imagine such events unfolding!" Bill King
by Buck Turgidson on Dec 24, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, we do.
The Giants pretty much HAVE to get someone to play the outfield this offseason and force out Schierholtz or Lewis.
It’s just that they’re strapped by Lincecum’s eminent arbitration award and can’t go after someone like Holliday or Bay until after that arb case.
Which is why I could see a Token Mediocre Vet being traded for.
"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it" ~ Mae West
Well we have Hairston...
What would they be willing to give up?
In a related question, when is the last time the A’s and the Giants made a trade?

showing each GM’s trades, there was no Sabean on the Beane file. And I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been any since then either.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
I could absolutely see this happening
Most of all, I think Sabean will freak out at the lack of power on the market and will be the only GM dumb enough to come close to matching LaRoche’s asking price (3 years $30MM).

What a great holiday gift. Glad to have him back.
What do people think about the rotation now?
I’m in favor of:
Braden
Duke
Anderson
Gio
Cahill/Mazzaro/Cassevah with my inclination leading to Cassevah if he looks serviceable during spring training. Delay the clock on Cahill/Mazzaro a little bit and give them some more time to work the kinks out in AAA. If he looks serviceable we could possibly give him 8 or so starts to see how he looks – if he’s succeeding then we look at how Cahill and Bizzaro are doing in AAA and have a good problem on our hands of too many pitchers. If he struggles, then we can hide him in the pen if we want to keep him and bring up Cahill/Mazzaro.
Our top of the rotation is looking very good
Braden, Duke, Anderson is the foundation of a very solid rotation. If we sign Beltre, we definitely have a chance to be competitive next year going the defense+pitching route, as a Beltre signing would give us an extremely good defense all around. I’m starting to like this offseason more and more…

Then replace Cassevah with Mortensen.

What makes duke any worse or better than harden
Both had their injury issue off and on with A’s. Duke might have been one of beane’s best deals ever in acquiring him. But the reality is he missed a chunk of 08 , most of 2009, and now they’ll be counting on him again. I personally wouldnt mind a reunion with blanton if phillies are still having payroll issues. I just cant trust duke unless they bring in more other rotation stability.

Well for one thing
Harden was more expensive than Duke as he signed for 6.5 mil plus about another 3.5 in performance bonuses IIRC. Not that it makes your point invalid at all but I’m sure cost effectiveness was a big factor.

Well for one thing,
he can pitch like a #1-#2 while Cahill saves service time by pitching in AAA, and if/when Duke has an owie you have Cahill ready to step in — plus he’s under contract in 2015.
Now if Cahill is simply going to make the rotation out of SP, then you can do the same with Mazzaro. Given how good the A’s “replacement pitcher” is going to be, getting 20+ starts out of Duke and then replacing him with Cahill, or Mazzaro, or Gio, is hardly a bad pitcher — in fact it’s a very good one.

I'm not that worried about Cahill or Mazzaro's service time. They're not exactly Matt
Wieters or Evan Longoria. They’d be very lucky to be worth a lot in 6 years.

The Ghost of Oakland A’s past, The Ghost of Oakland A’s Future and the Ghost of Oakland A’s present. First, the Ghost of Joe Rudi will take you to see the splendor of what the A’s were, then the Ghost of Chris Carter will show you what will be, and then the Ghost of Billy Beane will show you how this year unfolds. When you wake up in the morning you will have lost your pessimism and you will inexplicably start distributing money and hams to your neighbors and disseminating only good thoughts about the A’s.

don't be a stick in the mud
It’s good for all — the A’s had already invested a lot of time in him, and Duke was clearly guaranteed a starting spot (which is what he wants to do) for this year. After that, who knows, but if he performs well it will be good for us and good for him on the FA market. If he does poorly, then it’s only a year.

Braden/Duke both have durability issues
Cahill, Mazzaro should be in AAA

harden was dominant (when healthy, obviously) with us. I don’t know what the cubs’ dumbass pitching coach told him, but he sould have said “throw your fastball low, and your changeup lower” Since both pitchers will probably only make 20-25 starts, i’ll take harden

Harden would have cost more for the same starts
even with all else being equal, for that reason alone, I’ll take Harden. But with Duke, I mean he had clear physical injuries, but we don’t know what effect the depression had on his prior performance. Obviously, though, he will do at least as well with his depression resolved.

For as much as I love Duke
His ridiculous season a couple of years back was flukey. He’s a mid 3 ERA pitcher, not a sub-3 ERA pitcher. That said, I love love love this signing. Now he have a very strong number two behind Anderson (well, Braden is a strong number 2 as well, so we have two 2’s!).
Hopefully Gio get’s a spot, and then I don’t know who’s left for the fifth spot.

A mid-3 ERA pitcher is just fine with me!

well you and me both
I’m just saying I don’t think Duke is an ace, or anything. I think Anderson is likely to be our ace this year.

I could definitely see Anderson taking the next step forward this season.
And hey, if a mid-3’s ERA pitcher is our number 2 (or possibly 3?), we’ve got a great rotation.

I think the 2nd half of last season
proved that he is already prepared to make the next step.
If there is nothing else to be excited for in 2010, at least we’ve got an absolutely dominant pitcher in Anderson.
Those back to back shutouts last year were absolutely scary. He is the kind of pitcher who can completely take over a game…

What next step? Even if he repeats his 2009, he's absolutely awesome.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Outman's return.
Won’t he be a maybe by summertime, or is that still too soon?
I think that was mentioned as a target date
but it seems like these days, players come back sooner than their targets
