Michael Taylor, from an average Joe

Hello A's fans.  Just as a background, I am actually a Phillies fan, born and raised in Philadelphia and surrounding area.  The Phis are my team, but I also love the AL West in general (other than the Rangers), more than likely because I lived in Seattle for two years.  One of those two years was the M's 2001 season.  Also, interested in the historical aspect of the game, and the A's used to reside in Philly which is enough to keep me interested.

Anyhow, I had the ability to see Mr. Taylor on numerous occasions last year.  I work about 5 minutes from the Phils AA affiliate and live half way between the AA and AAA affiliate.  I am not a prospect maven and I will never claim to be, but I do follow along pretty closely.  Here is what I saw from the guy.

First off, he is absolutely huge.  This is a massive massive man at quite a young age.  At AA he makes others look like kids and he still stands out at AAA as well.  In terms of his bat, he has insanely freakishly quick hands.  I really don't know how he gets the bat around as quick as he does and I think it's more an optical illusion because he is so big.  I don't know if that makes any sense at all, but he turns on balls quickly.  I do know that he can come around on an inside pitch without issue so I would not expect him to be the type of guy who will get jammed.  If he has any issues, I would say it would be with lower pitches and plate discipline, but that's pretty normal as far as I am concerned, especially when someone has power like his.  Also, I have never seen him have a "flukely" hit.  Everything is solid contact, kind of reminds me of Vlad, but obviously he is not Vlad.

The part that I was never sold on was his speed.  There is no way he weighs 250 pounds.  He has to be 265, at least and he does have some speed, I just don't see it lasting.  I know it's a smaller sample size, but you could sort of see the game caught up with him a bit in AAA.  I just have a hard time believing that a man that large will be any kind of force on the paths at the major league level.  If there is one thing that I can impress upon you about Taylor, it's that he is a very large man who can hit like crazy.  He's going to be a big guy with power for you who will not kill you on the paths. I have no idea what he will ultimately hit, but from what I have seen he can really hit for average as well as power.  Just don't expect more than 10 bags a year.

In terms of defense, can't say that I have much information for you.  He was often not playing the field when I saw him in AA and didn't get much action in AAA.  I really don't know where is arm rates and even if I did, I never saw him field so I couldn't verify that.  In terms of prospects, thus far he is surely my favorite to watch throughout my lifetime.  I love the guy and I think you will too.  Congrats.

Thank you very much for that!

It’s always nice having fans from other teams coming over here and providing us with some info.
Hope he works out here, and I’ll be rooting for your Phils next year-unless we meet them in the WS ;)

Good question, and definitely just my opinion. I can answer best in this manner. He runs more like a TE than a WR. Does that make any sense? Long ground covering stride, but it’s not beautifully fluid. It’s not sloppy, but you can see his body is carrying weight and mass. Also, when you see this guy in person, especially at the lower level and you are that much closer to the field, his size is remarkable. But what he lacks in the speed department, he more than makes up with his swing.

Quick question: does he use the whole field, or tend to pull the ball most of the time?

BTW, I live in South Jersey, and I have to say that this snow is f**king ridiculous. We probably have about a foot and a half on the ground. Hope you’re not snowed in out by Lehigh or Reading!

In general he pulls the ball, but with his size he has no reason to be a slap hitter at this stage in the game. I think the important thing is that he has the hand speed at this stage in the game and as he develops at the plate, hopefully he will be able to adjust. And listen, I certainly did not see every AB of his, so he may spray the ball to right and I just don’t know. Everything is solid contact though and he doesn’t appear to try to kill the ball when he is at the plate. He just has that much power.

We only have about six inches here. Quite a let down. Also, since you are not that far away, if you get a chance, head to Reading or Allentown to watch Dom Brown. Smooth operator.

It was poor grammar. I’m sorry, but he is a huge muther fucker. That’s what I was trying to convey in a PC manner. And I don’t mean a Fielder or Meathook big, I mean like a McGwire before Andro and Frank Thomas before he stopped working out big.

I agree with you about the size comparison

in regards to The Big Hurt. Every piece of video or picture I have seen of Taylor screams a young Frank Thomas. Thanks so much for the insider report, hessshaun, and congrats to your Phils on the Halladay pick up. I’m still not sure why they assumed they would not be able to re-sign Lee, but I think it was Halladay they wanted all along anyways. Go A’s!

No idea at all

I should actually apologize to you for that one. I can see not wanting to sign him because we did just trade away 85% of our minor league system in the last two years. Assuming that we do not want to commit over $150 mil on pitchers the next 5-10 years, Lee should have returned us some nice prospects. This issue is that they should have played the Mariners and the Angels against each other. Thus, weaker teams in your division in the end.

On a side note, the West is setting up to be a very strong division.

by hessshaun on Dec 21, 2009 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

So do you feel like the Phillies did well in this trade?

I mean for what they gave up and got back in the end, all things being equal? If Halladay doesn’t get hurt and puts up anything close to the numbers he did in Toronto, the contract extension for 3 years @ 60 million is an absolute bargain! The option in year 4 is the same if he is still giving you close to the same numbers. The question I’m asking you is in terms of prospects the Phils gave up. Drabek & Taylor being the biggies!

I think he’s going to be even more dominating in the NL and Lincecum better start packing bigger and better lunches. Here comes Big Roy-Roy!

by mrod on Dec 21, 2009 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

The only thing that gives me pause on the Phillies' end

is a disappointed Lee saying he was hoping to finish his career in Philly. Sounds like he would have been open not only to an extension, but maybe one of several years at a hometown discount. And he’s a pretty darn good pitcher himself.

Of course for all we know, Lee will sign with Philly in 2011 as a free agent to anchor a rotation of Lee, Halladay, and pray for salad days. Then Philly wins big.

That's exactly why I don't underdstand

why the Phillies would say they were not sure Lee would re-sign with them or sign an extension. As far as I know, he still stands by his story and Philly has not said much of anything. Oh well, now we get to deal with King Felix & Cliff “They Call Me Bruce” Lee.

Salad…..it’s really undervalued……

by mrod on Dec 21, 2009 11:41 PM PST up reply actions

I actually wrote an article on this on the Phils portion if you are interested. I was thinking it out more or less, a day before the trade was “official”.

http://www.thegoodphight.com/2009/12/16/1203102/the-deal-analysis

In summary.

Obtaining Lee and Halladay were steals. I have no issue in what they gave up for either of them. Lee was just plain larceny and I expect to pay to get one of the top 5 pitchers in baseball in Halladay. I think they are definitely both in the top 10 in all of baseball. Halladay’s contract pretty much ensures that this deal is a no brainer. I don’t know that you can get better value out of any player in the league, not under the arbitration umbrella. Longoria is the only one coming to mind.

So we just traded about 8/10 highest rated prospects in the system. I can honestly see them wanting to stack the system back up. I have no issue with them only keeping Lee or Halladay, because they are Lee and Halladay. Anytime you can have a stud in your rotation you are better. Next year they have quite a few contracts that they will have to renew, including Werth and Victorino. You want those two, the ability to resign Rollins (beyond his option year), possibly resign Blanton, and maybe a fifth starter, you will need that money.

Then have another train of thought. They won the series two years ago with Hamels and a bag of chips as a pitching staff. Adding Lee or Halladay is just icing on the cake. To have both of them would be absolutely disgusting.

I am not greedy and I am just beyond elated that they have one of them. What really pisses me off is the urgency in which they traded Lee. Some people say that they could not let him linger around because the fan base would be really pissed if they traded him at a later date. IMO, so what, that’s business. You need a better return than the bullshit they got from the M’s. If you read my other article, you will get my take on prospects. The market for Lee would not have been that huge, but when you pit two teams in the same division against each other, it’s going to drive up his price. Not to mention that both those teams actually have the money to get a deal done with him if they wish to do so.

by hessshaun on Dec 22, 2009 6:30 AM PST up reply actions

Nice write up hess...

Maybe the the timeline for Halladay was more critical to the Phillies than having better negotiating/trade power for Lee. In other words, you might say that acquiring Halladay was more of a priority and having Lee be part of that deal was something they were gonna have to live with. Michael Taylor coming to the A’s was obviously a secondary deal that Toronto worked out with the A’s ahead of time, so he was coming in the deal no matter what.

As far as re-signing players on the current Phils roster, Werth and Victorino, yes. Blanton is probably gone after this year, assuming he signs a one year deal at some point. Jimmy Rollins, I’m not so sure he stays beyond his option year in 2011. It might be time to look for a new SS in the next two years for you guys.

Happy Holidays….!
