A's 2010 line-up
A's 2010 line-up

Recent moves have clarified A's line-up for 2010: Blah
Davis CF
Suzuki C
Sweeney RF
Fox DH
Chavez 3B
Hairston LF
Barton 1B
Ellis 2B
Pennington SS
Overall, line-up does not provide not much power, average or defense. Chavez and Fox will probably share DH/3B depending on Chavez's health..
I don't even see much position competition ready in the organization. Maybe a FA signing or trade will happen.

I think A's should sign either or if a miracle were to occur
both Miguel tejada and carlos Delgado, big boost to lineup
There are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq Chuck Norris lives in Texas
For your plan to work,
they may also need to trade for 2003.

It'd probably be available at a bargain price
We’d only have to trade 1979 and a year to be numbered later.
Do years depreciate like cars?
Is 2003 now worth about as much as a 6-year old car?

Eh?
Chavez 3B
Who?
Also, it’s not a good offense, but defensively it seems generally average or better.
exactly!
I thot we all agreed a long time ago to not include Chavez’s name into future lineup cards until he actually plays in some games. To me, he’s employed by the team as a (over)paid consultant.

Thanks
That lineup made me puke. If that is the lineup that starts the season its going to be a very long one.

Some would argue that we need it a little shorter.

With Jack off the team, who knows how many homeruns we'll hit.

At least we'll get to see our old friend

Hopefully we'll still find ways to Score.
Maybe we can bring back Johnson?
Got to hand it to you, Nico...
…that’s great insight. Of course, with Jack off the team, no one is going to be spewing about his three-outcome approach.

totally agree, its so early to project any lineup.
other than the Rangers, no one has made many moves. Plus with the exception of Figgins there hasnt been any major moves made on the free agent market
Exactly
We could still sign Matt Holliday!

Chavez 3B
Denial is not just a river in Egypt.
Ken Macha, here! Eric Chavez is a non-entity. Let’s go to Nations!
I am Ray Fosse's infatuations with Clay Wood and high-definition television.
I went to the Nation's in Fremont once.
I don’t think I’ll be going back.

Looking at that line up really makes me want to see the sharks go deep in the playoffs this year.
Every day is just a little worse than the previous, that means every day is the worst day of my life.
Hoping for the best
But gearing up for the annual heartbreak. At least having NHLN and Versus both in HD is good for keeping up when I can :-D

Well, it's definitely not an impressive line-up
and I would hope the A’s still have a couple moves up their sleeves but I think the pessimism is running a little bit rampant. Is this line-up all that different from the one the A’s were running out for the second half of the season when the offense was actually decent? The down grade from Cust at DH (who was pretty darn good in the second half) is significant but I think that it could be made up by replacing Kennedy at third (Chavez, McPhereson, or Wallace would probably hit significantly better than Kennedy did down the stretch), and having a healthy Hairston in left as opposed to gimpy Hairston.
It doesn’t look like a great offense, but I think the doom and gloom reactions are a bit much. Especially when you consider the possible reinforcements who will be making their debuts through out the season.
I used the word "uninspiring" in another post
But its not a terrible lineup, you can expect pretty much every player except Pennington and maybe Davis to improve their offensive performance from 09, but if Cliff stays at his same level from last year thats going to be good.
And its a really good defensive team, no idea why anyone would say otherwise….again our pitching will get us to .500 next year. The AL West is about to become an outright beast again if its not already.
I say otherwise.
THT had them -45 runs defensively in 2009. Giambi and Cabrera (Both Horrible) are replaced by Barton (Good) and Pennington (Less Horrible but not good), but there’s still no one at 3B. The defense is not a strength till they get plus defenders at SS and 3B.
This lineup is terrible and the pitching, which was very good in 2009, could easily get worse. Who really thought Anderson, Wuertz and Bailey would do as well as they did. CHONE projects each to lose a Win or more in 2010. They’d need Cahill, Gio and someone else to each take a big step forward just to repeat the staff performance of 2009.

I lol'd
Overall, line-up does not provide not much power, average or defense.
Keep in mind, of course, that "the best defense of Derek Jeter's life" ranks somewhere in between "the best fiscal responsibility of Mike Tyson's life" and "the best not-getting-assassinated-ness of James Garfield's life." -FJM
You have to admit, it's pretty good otherwise, though.

December 15, 2009 and 2010 season is over . . .
If all goes extremely well the A’s will have 7 guys hit 15 HRs and hit .270. Could pull into 3rd place. Wow, I guess there is hope for 2010.
That lineup will be terrible and the team will turn to this in June:
1B Barton
CF Davis
RF Sweeney
C Suzuki
2B Ellis
DH Wallace
LF Carter
SS Pennington
3B Cardenas
Bench — Powell, Fox, Patterson, Buck
Cardenas is backup SS. This team will be terrible in June and July and recover to mediocrity in August and September. And the false hope from 2H 2009 will be replaced by real hope from 2H 2010. The game threads will be fun.

Fox is still a bit raw to pencil in @4
I’d love to make a run @ Troy Glaus who is supposedly doing work outs at Jack Custs gym (read: getting fatter?). But irregardless of glaus, picking up a veteran bat with power to play 1b/DH is a good idea. Thome would also be ideal
Lineup:
Rajai R
Sweeney L
Suzuki R
Thome L
Hairston R
Chavez L
Fox R
Ellis R
Pennington R
Signing a veteran DH is an option for sure
Since they will be begging for work on their knees in few weeks. Although I like Fox more than some posters here, he shouldn’t be guaranteed a starting job. And I especially don’t want to see him or the hypothetical DH veteran playing first base – we need to give playing time there to our young guys. Personally, after suffering through Giambi on first base in 2009, I’ll puke in my mouth if I see someone not named Daric Barton, Chris Carter or Sean Doolittle playing there in 2010 even for an inning.
giambi definitely puts a bad taste in our mouth
But for some reason i am optmomistic on Thome or Glaus, mostly glaus.
I just don’t like idea of counting on chavy, hairston or fox as our 3-4-5
Chavy is a non-factor
I don’t think anyone in history of baseball returned strong after essentialy missing 2 1/2 seasons with serious chronical injuries. So our 3-4-5 if the season started today is most likely Suzuki-Hairston-Fox, which is truly terrible.
Thome was solid last year for the White Sox, he’s also a pure DH who has barely played field since 2005 so they wouldn’t be tempted to stick him at first under any circumstances. I would take him on a basement level deal, but I think he might as well call it a career now.
I’m a big fan of Glaus, but his health issues are also very serious. If he can play third and hit like he did in 2008 he would be a steal of the year.
what if glaus plays 1st or DHs
Sure he was a great 3b but if we can just get his bat alone to injury form it’s a significant upgrade to a middle of the order
