Settting the bar for our youngsters...
As AN approaches offseason GM/ projection mode of the team and it's imminent future, I wanted to see what AN thinks about our bright young offensive future Oakland A's. I want to see how AN views the expectations of these guys in waiting, and I am taking a shot at where I have the bar set for our specific youngsters in Sac-town.
Cardenas: I think Cardenas should shoot for Mark DeRosa and focus on being versatile in the infield and master playing at multiple positions but always starting and providing solid numbers with the bat.
Jemile Weeks: As far as Jemile Weeks, maybe he can vision himself after Chone Figgins and become a legit leadoff hitter/ dangerous stolen base threat???
Chris Carter: He definitely has the highest bar set of them all; Ryan Howard. At this point it seems the entire offensive future from the power stand point lies solely in this man. I sure hope he turns out to be the much needed "Superman" of the Oakland A's offense.
Brett Walace: As far as Wallace, I'm going to leave this one for the AN community, but in my opinion he kind of reminds me of Brett Boone, the good version (PED era in Seattle)

I'd like to buy a vowel.

Now I'd like to solve the puzzle!
I think Wallace should aspire to be like Troy Glaus — a guy with power and OBP skills who manages to make himself into a good 3Bman despite the physical limitations of his build.

nice comp
though staying healthier than glaus would be nice

Yeah, but being exactly Glaus overall would still be awesome
Wallace doesn’t look like he has either Glaus’ power or defensive ability. And it’s not like Glaus was that brittle in his prime.

Glaus was a SS in college
His negative UZR does him no help in most yrs, but I would say glaus had more defensive qualitites than wallace wishes he had.
Wallace seriously needs to dedicate himself to nutrisystem and P90x, he’ll change his body in 3-4 months
Yeah, that's why I thought of Glaus as a "best case scenario"
for what Wallace could aspire to be. Wallace also doesn’t have Glaus’ raw power.
But most guys I can think of that are like Wallace either couldn’t hack it at 3B (Hinske, Giambi, Wigginton) or have low OBPs are thus aren’t that similar in profile (Sandoval, or Blalock, whose swing seems kind of similar but he doesn’t walk and he was far more mobile at 3B).

Extreme upside for Wallace: David Wright without the SBs?
Weeks has more power than Figgins; I’m hoping for Brian Roberts.
Sure hope Cardenas ain’t Mark DeRosa, since that would mean his breakout season would come in about 2018 in a different uniform…

Spencer: What kind of fire are we talking about-- "Michael Jackson in the Pepsi commercial" fire, or "misusing the word literally" fire?
How about your take on Carter?
I was going to go with David Wright as well…
I’ll agree with Brian Robers, but I wasn’t aware he had “some” power, at least more than Chone?
I'll take Chone
over a Rickie Weeks comp…which is what I’m afraid of.

Jemile and Rickie don't typically get compared to each other
They’re not all that similar physically.

No
but their stats are similar (though I’m comparing MLB to AA ball, so take that with a grain of salt).
And Mark Ellis isn’t physically similar to Ryan Sweeney, yet both hit about the same (Ellis has more power).
I’d say for the majority of players, their physical build plays into their ability to hit. However, I think players have certain types of hitting styles, regardless of their body type (one other example might be Travis Buck).
Ok, I’m done, I feel like I’m rambling.

I'm not saying he won't end up in the same place
Just that they aren’t great comps from a scouting perspective.
Rickie Weeks isn’t a terrible player; you could get worse with a first-round pick.

I wont attempt to play this game
We’ve learned from past A’s players to not too excited
Beane called Tlong a young barry bonds LOL
Barton was thought of like another pujols in the lower minors. Or Olerud ,Mark Grace comparison.
Chavez and Crosby future mvp’s, Harden a future cy young. If those 3 were anything close to even fringe/semi all star level type players, its safe to say they’d have a couple more playoff appearances and at least delayed a rebuild.
Um
of course Beane would ridiculously build his players up, but I’m pretty sure any educated fan realized T Long would never be THAT good. Or that Barton would be THAT studly. Harden could’ve been a Cy Young if he had stayed healthy, and Chavvy was no slouch.

Maybe Billy just meant
he figured both would be out of baseball by 2010.
I don’t think Bret Boone is a good Wallace comp, by the way. Boone played a good 2B for several seasons; Wallace will be lucky to play an average 3B for a couple.

So Wallace will have to juice to have a couple of good years at 3rd?
Zeigler to Geren…."A-Rod? He’s my bitch." -alox
If you mean a diet of only orange and apple juice, then yes.

Would Wallace even be better if he lost weight?
Sure he’d be more agile, but without Jack Cust or Joe Blanton, there’s no one to eat up the post game spread. Ellis is about to get a lot fatter…

Don't remember that
I remember him comparing Chavez with Bonds at the same age
then Chavy's spine fell out of his body.
Don't believe in yourself.
Believe in Me who believes in You.
Chris Carter should shoot for Mark McGwire
Brett Wallace should shoot for Jason Giambi
Adrian Cardenas should shoot for Carney Lansford
Jemile Weeks should shoot for Danny Murphy
