DLD 12/11/09 - Fishing Bloopers and other vids

It is funny how a DLD gets stale and people stop posting links or checking links posted late.  So I guess we need another one (and when I say "we" I mean "I").  It is also weird that I feel this need to share everything I find funny or ammusing with AN.  A lot of times I post things on Facebook but the fact that my Mother, Father, Sisters, Aunts, Church friends, and my Pastor's wife are all my friends makes me think twice about what I post there.  Some people are more sensitive to salty language, bathroom humor, etc. and will call you out when posting something they find offensive (thanks Mom).

Speaking of Facebook.

If someone gets tired of me posting these Link Dumps, WELL POST YOUR OWN!  I haven't got around to doing the DLD with the Nintendo Wii angle yet but considering how many people thought the Gamecube was lame I doubt many people are waiting in anticipation for it.  Anyways, here are some of the things that I have been wasting time on instead of sleeping/working.

Speaking of Tetris

this is going on in the city this weekend

I can’t make it along, but some of my friends are in one of the bands. And there’s tetris!

I suspect that you think tilting at windmills means something other than what it does

I would like to slay zombies

with Natalie Portman actually I would like to do almost anything with Natalie Portman.

I’d also like to say thanks to micdog2001 for all his DLD’s which are my favorite things on AN right now.

I have to say, this takes the whole Keira Knightley/Natalie Portman "rivalry that no one will admit openly is a rivalry"

to a new level…

O'Hara: Detective Lassiter is literally on fire.
Spencer: What kind of fire are we talking about-- "Michael Jackson in the Pepsi commercial" fire, or "misusing the word literally" fire?

Word up on all accounts

I’d convert for Natalie Portman. Hell yes, I would. Sorry, Pope.

Wow

They couldn’t even be bothered to spend 400K on the guy after he got injured playing for them? He wasn’t even arb-eligible.

That’s jackass-tastic.

Dayton Moore signed Jason Kendall to a 2yr/$6MM contract.

Anytime I feel down on Beane

I just remember it could be much, much, much, much worse.

I have several friends from college that are Royals fans and I feel bad for them because Dayton Moore is a clown and the Royals are a sick joke of a franchise.

That didn't take long.

Best part
*Brilliant Reader Johnny suggests that Kendall clearly represents one more puzzle piece in Dayton Moore’s never-ending effort to rebuild the Major League roster. Kendall certainly does inspire thoughts of Tom Berenger’s former All-Star trying to get one more season in the sun (and you could see Kendall bunting in a key situation). Manager Trey Hillman has some Lou Brown in him — or, anyway, you could see him selling tires in Toledo. Kyle Farnsworth was probably an effort to recreate Charlie Sheen’s Wild Thing. Jose Guillen, at least at one time, hit fastballs very very good. And Sidney Ponson, Brett Tomko, Kip Wells, Bruce Chen and John Thompson were just five of the recent attempts to find the old pitcher, Harris, who is just hanging on … the search goes on.

And what are the Royals searching for now? You got it: A fast center fielder. If you see a really fast guy trying out in his pajamas — you will know.

"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

Kelly Johnson was non-tendered by the Braves today

He made $2.8MM last year, a down year where his slash looked like .224/.303/.389, though it was hampered by a seriously low .254 BABIP. He broke even according to UZR last year at 2B, though historically has been below average.

At this point, I wouldn’t mind calling and seeing if he would be willing and able to play 3B.

If you think Billy Beane is a bad GM, I hate you and find you stupid.

Zduriencik built that team to peak in 2010-2011.

He’s been planning it all along. That’s why he was a weird combination of “buyer” and “seller” at the trade deadline in 2009.

How can I get my hands on play-by-play data?

Does anyone know?

Something like GameDay data, where every PA is documented with the situation on the field prior to the PA, outcome of the PA and the situation afterward.

Preferably as a single source and in some XML or similar format?

Does something like that exist and is it freely acquirable? Does word acquirable exist?

by elcroata on Dec 14, 2009 4:18 AM PST reply actions

You can get PitchFX/GameDay data off of MLB.com.

The data consists of every single piece of information that shows up on GameDay. Unfortunately, it’s kind of a pain to download all of the XML files individually, as the files are separated for each game. (http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/, then click on the year, click on the month, the day, then the game). All of the XML files you’ll need are in that directory.

Also, you could always try BBRef or Retrosheet.

The Angels are reported to have signed Hideki Matsui

are the Angels stockpiling former Yankee outfielders? Maybe they should sign Damon while they’re at it ;-)
