Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

Its official: Bye Bye Bobby

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Bobby Crosby have agreed to a 1 year deal.  He and his father are Pittsburgh's problem now.  I guess we all knew this was inevitable, he wanted out of Oakland and his welcome had warn thin.  I wish it could have worked out better for the both of us.  But you really only had two decent seasons, only one year did you hit over .250 and you haven't hit more the 10 home runs in season since your rookie year.  Best of luck.

Good for bobby

As much as he sucked for us, I really wish him well! He was an A’s fan growing up and I love that! Just never could put it together after that rookie year. Hopefully he has a great year.

I too would enjoy seeing Bobby succeed.

I was never a huge fan, even when he didn’t suck, but I’m always in favor of our former players turning out good elsewhere. Maybe some day he’ll become Carlos Peña and fans here will bitch about how we let him get away.

I wish Bobby Crosby the best

I liked him as a player and always rooted for him to do well. I kept thinking he was on the verge of putting it all together, but it never happened. I hope he has a monster season for the Pirates. I’m not sure if BobbyCrosbysGirl still posts here but she was one of my favorites on AN. I hope she doesn’t change her username.

I do still post ever now and then. I was working on my Masters Thesis this last year and have been rather busy, so I didn’t post as often as I would have liked to. Now that I am done, I hope to post more. And I honestly don’t know what to do about my screen name.

I liked BC, too. He wasn’t one of my favorite players or anything like that, but I was hoping that 2009 would be his break out year, but the A’s fooled around and signed Ocab. If healthy, I think BC could be a solid player for the pirats. I still wouldn’t draft him on my fantasy team.

Crosby continually came out with these statements that made me think “the only way anyone could possibly say this is if he is either a. the most self-impressed egomaniac on the face of the planet, or b. deficient in the upper story.”

I don't know about "self-impressed"

Drafted in the first round? (25th overall)…
When he was in Sacto, was anointed heir-apparent to a $60+ million shortstop (2003 in Sacto, he compiled a .939 OPS). I recall Tejada stepping aside to let Crosby play the last week or two.
Similar physical size to Cal Ripkin, Jr. and ARod.

So I don’t think it was a total fabrication for the guy to believe he was “hot shit” coming in. Problem was, he couldn’t adjust his self-assessment to deal with failure at the MLB level. He should have been more ready before they installed him at the MLB level. But many thought he was the next Jeter, with better range.

Throughout history, events has made men noteworthy (good or bad) when an isolated event turns them from one road to another. With Bobbie Crosby, I think it was that rookie year game May 8, 2004 where he GIDP with runners at first and third, no outs, 8th inning, 2-2 game in the balance, Hudson pitching a gem. Then lost the game in the 10th with an error. If he’d hit a GWRBI instead, I believe his history would have been different. He sunk to a .183 BA with that game.

Nick Punto the only Twin left from that game. Rob Bowen caught it for the Twins!

A speculation, but that game and the post-game always stood out to me.

His biggest fault was that he was really hyped and took the job from Tejada! Look at the line Walt Weiss put up with us. It was pretty similar. The guy had a lot of crappy injuries, and he never could put it together.

I would not be surprised to see him hit something like .260 with 10-15 hr’s if he gets at least half the at-bats at SS in Pittsburgh though for some reason, which might happen. In fact I kind of expect him to have a decent year for them. Fresh start, NL, less pressure perhaps, etc.
