Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

12/1/09: December DLD!

Wow, is it December already??? Where has 2009 gone??? I better post some links before the year completely ends...

Let's see how our old friends are doing...

Cubs not expected to offer arbitration to Rich Harden.

Marco Scutaro wants to play with Boston or Los Angeles.

Oh, but I've got other random linkage from around the baseball world!

Should I someday have a child, I am going to make sure he learns how to play first base. Oddly enough, despite my playing first base for my softball team in eighth grade, I make nowhere near the MLB average. Or maybe they just haven't sent me my paycheck yet...

The only thing that surprises me about this is that it's the first time a Yankee has been named. Maybe it just seems like the Yankees win everything every year....

Yet another reason not to email naked pictures of yourself to someone. Or send them via text message. Really, if you are going to take naked pictures to give to someone, it's best to break out the old Polaroid camera so that there's no negatives, no digital file, nothing that could fall into the wrong hands. What? They don't make Polaroid film anymore? Oh, there goes that plan....

Does anyone else keep getting these email invites to become a member of the MLB Players Alumni Association? Because I'm thinking that if they are inviting me, then it's not really an exclusive membership. Unless it goes back to that paycheck they haven't sent me yet....oooooh, maybe I AM a major league baseball player!!

Angels give Adenhart estate a full playoff share.  I hate when the Angels do something nice and good. I'll try not to hate on them too much today.

Bye Bye Bud.

And in the stories of the weird...

This is officially NOT on my holiday gift wish list. Please no.

I got nothing else today. Dump away my friends, dump away....

So far Mariners, Rangers, Red Sox, and Dodgers have expressed interest

I would love to see him go to the Dodgers. I just can’t root for anyone in a Red Sox uniform, and I’d hate to face him and his game-winning heroics as often as we face the AL West teams….

I thought hard about it

Unfortunately my son’s favorite pitcher to watch when he was in his left/right formative years was Zito. With kids they mimic what they see so he would always pitch from the right (mirror image from the TV, seats). He’s also into playing the guitar so I wrote FITZ on the inside of his cap for his first year of Little League. I hope the worst that happens is that he dates the current teen star of his times.

I can’t imagine they’d neglect to offer him, given that multiple teams are already expressing interest.

But totally wrong for the part. His voice just sounds too whiny for the tough soldier, super hero role. Cheadle seems a much better fit there.

Urban is out at MLB.com

Not sure if anyone follows his Twitter, but Mychael Urban has announced that he’ll be leaving MLB.com starting on December 4th. No info available about his replacement.

This news should make some at AN pretty happy…I liked the guy well enough and hope he isn’t being fired or anything and can still find an outlet to share his particular viewpoints and use his contacts in the game.

I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!

by Taj Adib on Dec 1, 2009 1:00 PM PST reply actions

I always liked Urban

He definitely had some biases in his writing but everyone does, I felt he was always honest enough about his opinions and that he provided an interesting insight into the club I love to follow. I hope he has success in wherever he goes and also that whoever gets the task of following the A’s around can get as much access as Urban did.

that actually makes me sad

I don’t know how good a writer he was (I’m not a very good judge) but he seemed to get some insights from the players. A new writer would have to create new bonds with the players. Although with the A’s climate of players coming and going so quickly it probably won’t make much difference.

Am I the only one

who has a grammar peeve with the cooptation of the British use of the plural for collectives, when used by Americans to describe certain sports teams?

Unless you always say things like “Kansas City are a poor baseball team,” why would you suddenly start doing it to describe soccer and cricket teams? The fact that they’re British-ey games doesn’t mean that you have to talk about them in British English. (Of course this doesn’t apply if you are, in fact, British.)

I actually don't mind it.

I don’t think it’s wrong to adopt regional idioms when discussing regional phenomena. To me it just feels like a natural adaptation to one’s surroundings. Just like if I’m talking to statisticians I would say “the data are” but talking to laymen I’d say “the data is”.

If it felt affected and pompous to me, that would bother me, but in this case it doesn’t. (For example, it does feel affected and pompous to me that the local major league soccer team calls itself “Sounders FC”. FC? Gimme a break.)
