Open Thread: World Series - Game 6
Okay, I know I say this all the time, but just watch it.You know you want to.
It will be one of the last baseball games of 2009 (possibly the last game), and it has Pedro Martinez going up against Andy Pettitte. The Phillies have their backs to the wall for yet another night, looking to tie the series with a win. Yankee Stadium is commanding an average of $1,000 to attend tonight's contest. It's the highest grossing event in StubHub history.
Pedro allowed three runs in six innings in the loss last week, but he will have the advantage of five days rest. His competition will be pitching on just three.
So who will be the hero tonight? Will the Phillies take it to Game 7 or will the Yankees celebrate yet another championship; the first one in their new park? The Game starts in thirty minutes.

Super Bowl has too much BS all over it
It’s a huge event, but it’s 90% fluff and hype. On the Masters, I’m not into golf so it’s not even on my radar screen. Game 7 is the culmination of 8 or 9 months of baseball — the final round of the Masters is the culmination of 4 days of golf, and IIRC it’s the 1st GS event of the season .

"The trouble with baseball is that it is not played the year round." Gaylord Perry
by BERRYJO on Nov 4, 2009 7:20 PM PST up reply actions
No, not much heavier, I don't think
Just much smaller and not nearly as strong. Watch clips of great players from the 70s or before — no one loads up and pounds the ball, because if you swing that hard with a wood racquet you won’t get the ball in the sweet spot. The game was much more varied, and serve-and-volley was a lot more fun to watch then.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
I'm sure the composition of the strings was different too.....
made for different action on the tennis ball.
"The trouble with baseball is that it is not played the year round." Gaylord Perry
by BERRYJO on Nov 4, 2009 7:25 PM PST up reply actions
Well, they'd stopped using catgut some time in the 60s or something
I know the oversized, modern racquets have all kinds of odd string arrangements. But even if you adapted some of those for wood racquets, you’d still cut down on the sheer power of the hitting.
I think they’re great for the average weekend player, but not so much for pros.
Maybe if they just mandated a maximum surface area of the racquet that would do the trick. But massively increasing hitting power without changing the court is bound to screw the game up.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
I think players that dominate have to be able to do it all.....
power game from the back court, have a monster serve, finese down the lines and S & V. One weakness of Roddick’s game – I think – is too much reliance on the power game from the back court.

I don't really watch tennis any more
so I can’t comment too much about contemporary players. But about 7 or 8 months ago I saw part of a Borg/McEnroe exhibition match they played last year in Bangkok, I think. Borg and McEnroe were the last 2 dominant men who played with wood racquets (Lendl followed McEnroe, and he used a large composite) but in this match they were using modern, oversized, composite racquets.
And the thing is, their serves and ground strokes looked a hell of a lot like they did 30 years ago. Neither of them moved like he did in his 20s (though they’re both in good shape) but those racquets basically took 30 years off their ground strokes. It was really cool to see them play like that again, but those racquets really distort the game.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Or paper racquets.
I’d watch that.

I don't think it is
In my memory (which goes back to ‘86), I think there’s only been one that’s actually been a decent game of soccer
I think a lot of top-level international soccer encourages conservative play
Very few sides want to play wide open.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
You do, occasionally, get teams that will open up
But if you’re not one of the elite teams, you’re more likely to get a result by sticking ten men behind the ball and playing for penalties.
I think England could surprise people by veing rather more attacking than expected, this summer – they have a dearth of decent defenders, and a manager who is pragmatic enough to know that they’re going to concede, so they’re going to have to score..
The WC will be fun
but again, the 7th game of a series between 2 teams, coming at the end of 8 or 9 months of a season…the NBA and NHL have the same structure, and if I were a bigger hockey fan (or Canadian) I’d probably say that a 7th game in the NHL finals is just as good.
But one of the things that I love about WS Game 7s is the “all hands on deck” aspect, which AFAIK doesn’t exist in other sports — a starter throwing 3 innings out of the pen 2 days after throwing a CG, that kind of thing.
"And Julio Franco is batting right-handed!" -- Wayne Hagin, A's radio play-by-play, mid-80s
Yeah, and with two teams that have faced each other six times over the course of a week or so
with the corresponding tension that brings in terms of aggravating each other.
Plus, the interplay between hitters and pitchers adjusting to seeing each other so much, too

Truth
Stephen Curry, Anthony Randolph, Anthony Morrow, Brandan Wright and Andris Biedrins are really talented young players and the first two have All-Star potential. I could include Monta Ellis, even, and he’s already averaged over 20 points in a season before.
The team can score with anybody in the league and proved it last year by finishing second in the league. If they can play some decent defense, they’re a playoff team.
