Community Prospect List #18.5 - Runoff
I was hoping that if I left it long enough, there'd be a clear winner. That was not the case, they were still stuck between 3 votes of each other, so its runoff time again.
Ben Hornbeck, SP, Age 21

I voted Hornbeck.
But there isn’t a huge difference

is the poll supposed to say
“who is the 18.5 prospect”? shouldn’t it still be 18 or can we have a half of a prospect, like a combo of somebody maybe?
I'll take a combo of Chris Carter and Corey Wimberley
Wait… we have that….Grant Desme.

Your 2011 starting SS: Grant Desme!
Awesome?

Power and speed
would be the combination. Desme can do alot, but playing SS is not one of them. And yes, striking out is one of the things he does.

Leaks out an awful lot too.

but yeah, tis the interwebs, and sarcasm isn’t detected. Mea culpa.

How well do you think James Simmons would have pitched in Stockton last year?

I doubt he'd have struck out 112 hitters in 80 innings...
I mean, I get what you’re saying, but I think Hornbeck’s line looks better whether you translate his numbers to AAA or Simmons’s to A+. By minorleaguesplits’ MLE calculator, Hornbeck’s MLE FIP is 4.14 and Simmons’s is 4.97.
By the way, that seems like a rather excellent argument for Hornbeck: his MLE FIP was 4.14 this year. That would make him a #2 starter on an average major league team. I know MLEs aren’t everything and whatnot, but given that he’s already made huge improvements in stuff from when he was drafted, is it that hard to see him being able to replicate that season at a higher level?

Voted Simmons
I’m gonna cut a 22 year old pitcher who had a poor year at AAA (but still put up a FIP of 3.99) a bit of slack considering his strong performance as a 21 year old in AA and his superior draft pedigree

That's how I feel
I’ll give him another year in AAA to get it together before I lose complete faith in him as a prospect.

Will there be a poll for #19?
Or will you just award spot #19 to whoever places 2nd in this one, and proceed with polling for #20?

We should have a poll about which one to do

Poll:
Should we have a poll about whether or not to have a poll about whether or not to award spot #19 to the loser of the runoff?
1. Ja
2. Nein
3. Blank #2
4. Pickles!

I think Hornbeck’s Kane County stats from last season should also be listed in the original post. Including the Midland stats but not the Kane County stats doesn’t make sense to me, especially since the Midland start was a last-second callup due to that day’s starter being sick.

Yes. It makes absolutly no sense
to include his 2009 stats if you dont include his 2008 stats.
Wait what?

Talking about the start of 2009
Hornbeck threw 36.1 innings in Kane County at the beginning of the season and he was pretty dominant with a 4.7 K/BB ratio.

I might actually be on the winning side
Of a non-no-brainer for the first time! Go Simmons!

He is building up a sizeable lead!
Well they have been neck and neck the whole time so 9 more is quite sizeable in this run off!
