DLD 11/24/09 - Fine, I'll make another video game dump
What is all this talk about baseball on this site? :-) I guess no one has the time to post a DLD. I would think someone who has mentally checked out for the short week at work would have posted one. Well, if I'm doing it then you get video games as a topic. I saw this on yahoo's video game blog.
Man marries video game character
**UPDATE** This link now has video of the "ceremony".
That is kind of pathetic IMO.
Continuing my thread of Nintendo consoles and my favorite games for them, I present the Gamecube! (GCN for short). I received the GCN as a birthday present and while I don't look back as fondly on it as the previous Nintendo consoles I still logged a lot of hours on it. I think that is mostly because I was older when I got it and it isn't really that old yet. I guess kids do have more fun. It was released November 2001, which sounds old but in the scheme of life isn't that long. (to save time, I will just copy some things straight from wikipedia. These take too long without doing that.)
The Nintendo GameCube Game Disc is the software storage medium for the Nintendo GameCube, created by Matsushita. Chosen to prevent unauthorized copying and to avoid licensing fees to the DVD Consortium, it is Nintendo's first non-cartridge storage method for consoles released outside of Japan
Those mini-discs were much easier to store and take with you to a friends house but that was about the only positive thing. Some games required 2 discs, like Medal of Honor: Rising Son.
The GameCube features two ports that accommodate memory cards for saving game data. The three official memory card sizes are: 59 blocks (4 Mbit/512 KB, grey card), 251 blocks (16 Mbit/2 MB, black), and 1019 blocks (64 Mbit/8 MB, white).
This was a nice feature, if you and your friend both had a game you could take your memory card with you and use it to load profiles and the like (excellent for MVP Baseball 2005's team rosters).
The MultiAV port is identical to the one used in Nintendo's earlier Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo 64 consoles, allowing most cables from these systems to be used interchangeably.
So if you were like me and you lost your AV cord for the SNES then you could use the GCN cord, sweet!
The regular gamecube controllers were great but during the GCN era Nintendo made one of the greatest controllers EVER. The Wavebird, a wireless remote that would work up to 20 ft away (some say 60-70 ft) even when not in direct line of sight. I think this was the first widely successful wireless remote and it has become an industry standard. It didn't have rumble but I didn't care.
The GameCube sold nearly 22 million units worldwide during its lifetime, lagging far behind the 140 million PlayStation 2 consoles sold. The GameCube finished its generation slightly behind the Xbox, which sold 24 million units before being discontinued. It also did not outsell its predecessor, the Nintendo 64, which sold almost 33 million units in its lifetime.
In September 2009, IGN named the GameCube the 16th best gaming console of all time.
I got a little worried near the end of the Gamecube's run that Nintendo was going to close or something. They were WAY behind Sony as you can see (although I'm surprised they were so close to the XBOX) and were kind of the laughing stock of the gaming community. I will get into the Nintendo Wii later but lets just say Nintendo is the one laughing now (even if the hardcore gaming community still hates them).
The number of games released for the console exceeds 600, with 208.56 million GameCube games sold as of June 30, 2008
That is 9.48 games per console sold. Not bad i guess. This will take a while but I will go through the 600 games and pick out my favorites. (note, my favorites, not the best overall games for the GCN) Oh, and before I get into the best I would just like to say the All-Star Baseball 2002 on the GCN was one of the worst baseball games ever. Ot was so unbalanced and I hated playing it, a disgrace to the franchise. On to my favs! In alphabetical order (well, except the games with sequels I put in chronological order once I got to their alphabetical spot)
- Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (lack of multplayer sucked but good single player experience)
- Dead to Rights (bullet time! and a canine companion)
- Goldeneye: Rogue Agent (not even close to Goldeneye but I still enjoyed the powers of the cybernetic eye)
- The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction(way better than the new Wii Hulk game)
- James Bond 007: Nightfire (way better than Agent Under Fire and the World is Not Enough)
- James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (3rd person view game that featured a story made for the game only and Hollywood actors providing voices and their likeness to characters in the game. It also was the first Bond game with two-player cooperative mode, but not a true deathmatch mode.)
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (I never played Windwaker, not sure why)
- Madden NFL (all the versions blend together, I only bought one GCN version)
- Mario Kart: Double Dash
- Mario Party 5 (more like a board game than a video game but I liked it because my girlfriend at the time and now wife actually played it with me. Just about the only GCN game we played together)
- Mario Superstar Baseball (arcade type baseball but it combined my two favorite things, Nintendo and Baseball)
- Medal of Honor: Front line (the first on many WWII FPSsfor Nintendo. It starts out with a huge bang, as you take part in the D-Day invasion. Great game, one of my all-time favorite games. It seemed a lot like the movie Saving Private Ryan)
- Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (followed up with an equally awesome level of Pearl Harbor but the the game was poorly received by critics and gamers. A planned sequel were you play the brother of the main character in Rising Sun (you actually see your bro in a couple of the levels) was scrapped because of the negative reception)
- Medal of Honor: European Assault (a nice recovery after Rising Sun. It featured an upgraded interface, HUD, and weapons)
- Mega Man Anniversary Collection
- Mega Man X Collection
- Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (a remake of the Playstation game but still great)
- Metroid Prime (although I got sidetracked and never completed the game, it was still fun)
- MLB Slugfest 03 or 04 (not as great as MVP but still kind of fun. Being on fire was cool)
- MVP Baseball 2005 (greatest baseball game ever)
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (I barely played it but when I did it was good)
- Resident Evil 4 (some say the best game overall on the GCN)
- Robotech: Battlecry
- Sonic Mega Collection
- Soulcalibur II (The GCN version was the best because it had Link from Legend of Zelda as a playable character. Awesome game)
- SSX Tricky
- SSX 3
- SSX On Tour
- Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
- Super Mario Strikers (it got a little stale after a few games but ti was still fun)
- Super Smash Bros. Melee (nice upgrade from the N64 version)
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 (great game, I never really played the next couple years installments)
- TimeSplitters 2 (I LOVE this game. Great story, great characters with a ton to choose from in multiplayer, lots of unlockable content, great replay value, and it was funny)
- TimeSplitters: Future Perfect (equally awesome, continued right where 2 left off)
- True Crime: Streets of LA (some people complain this was a GTA clone but i can't say because I've never played a GTA game)
Wow, 34 games on this list. I don't remember spending that much time playing games and that doesn't count games I didn't list because I didn't really like them or the times I played other consoles at a friends house. Not surprising is that out of all 34 only 10 do not involve some type of violence (unless you count football and soccer, then there is only 8). I would like to say that I am not a violent person in real life. I have never even been in a real fight before. I have never shot a living thing (except with a paintball gun) although I do kill most common bugs without hesitation. I will admit to having some pent up aggression and anger, perhaps this is where I let some of that out.
Now to pull a top 5 from that list, oh boy this will be difficult. Edit - After making this list I had to change it to a top 10. After the top 3 I'm not sure if I keep this order, I just can't officially decide.
- MVP Baseball 2005 (I played this a ton with my cousin and still bust it out when I feel the need for baseball in the off season. This is the last baseball game I purchased.)
- Soul Caliber II (I unlocked every character, costume, and weapon)
- Medal of Honor: Frontline (classic in my eyes)
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003
- James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (co-op mode with my bro-in-law)
- Timesplitters 2 (Future Perfect might have the edge in story, maybe, but I spent more time on multiplayer with 2)
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- SSX 3
- The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
- James Bond 007: Nightfire

Unfortunately, this is where I get off
No, not like that, LB. What I mean is, the Gamecube was what convinced me to jump over to the PS2 side, which worked out pretty well I’d say. Still, it led to the first time I missed a major (re: not on Gameboy) Zelda game, so that kinda sucked. On the plus side, sweet, sweet Final Fantasy.
And mic, there’s no “IMO” about it. The dude who marries a fictional character is a sad man.
Besides, that girl is a totally slut
Like, half the guests at the wedding had slept with her.

if I ever jumped ship
it would be to XBOX, I just never have had much fun with Playstation.

MMMMMmmmmmmm
Final Fantasy….
PS 1 had the best suite of FF games, followed closely by Super Nintendo. The PS2/3 titles have left me less than impressed.
Those FF titles for PS1 were awesome too...

If they ever stop pussyfooting around and do a FF VII remake for PS3,
I will buy one the very next day. Until then, I have no interest in buying a new gaming system. I just run an emulator on my computer and use all my old PS1 disks. Works well enough for me.

O Captain, my Captain...
When a game is a genre unto itself, there is nothing you can accurately measure it against. Thus, over/under-rated kinda goes out the window.
Such is FF VII.
These DLD's have been fun micdog2001
but a Gamecube? C’mon man. I was a huge Xbox fan and many of my friends thought the PS2 was the greatest thing ever but I’ve never heard anyone defend the cube.
But hey you know your video games and if you enjoyed your Gamecube then maybe that machine wasn’t as bad as I’d heard.
As far as the dude marrying a video game character well…..hmm……uh……
Well
On my list, besides the seven Zelda, Mario, and Metroid games the rest are all multi-platform games. I think the PS2 and XBOX are better machines but I have always been a Nintendo fanboy. Of the multi-platform games I think almost all of them have higher scores and praise on the other consoles. BUT that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few decent games for the ’cube. It got a bad rap as a “kiddie” console but it had 40 or so M rated games I think. Nintendo consoles are almost always cheaper also, which is a plus when convincing parents or signifigant others that a purchase is worth it.

The lower price does help
I’ve alway wondered if Nintendo thought about raising the prices on the Wii when it was flying off the shelves.
Nothing wrong with being a Nintendo fanboy as I’ve become an Xbox fanboy and now I can’t imagine having anything else.
btw
I’m glad you have enjoyed them. No one else has said so but they usually generate a lot of comments and obviously it gives a place for people to post random links also. So I kept posting them. I’ll post one more after Thanksgiving about the Wii

I agree.
But micdog is a total Nintendo-homer. I’ve been all over the board—no allegiance at all.
The order of things:
Magnavox II—Atari 2600—5200—NES—Sega Genesis—PS1—PS2—XBox360, with a generous sprinkling of computer games as well. And I think I’m missing a system or two in there…

Nothing wrong with being a Nintendo-homer
Iwata-san and Miyamoto-san can have my unborn children if they wanted, and Reggie can kick my ass and take my name anytime.
That said, it’s also smart to be “multiplatform” and not stick to being a single-console fanboy. Too many great games you’d miss out on, that’s my motto (savings account withstanding, anyhow).
My order (pretty Nintendo-centric, but I was a kid with no money afterall):
Sega Master System III – NES – Gameboy – SNES – GBC – GBA – GCN – PS2 – N64 – Xbox360 – Wii.
Wii is used for a couple of RPGs and Nintendo games (Zelda, Metroid, etc), and the rest is the “casual” stuff for parties and my mom (she whips my behind in bowling every time!). I’ll eventually get more games for it, but for now my mom is the #1 user of the Wii
360 is used for RPGs and shooters. Accursed CoD:MW2, you will now hog most of my awake-time!
I would buy a 360 if I could convince my wife
but she will have none of it. i did buy her a $500 camera (Nikon D3000, good camera?) for Christmas so maybe she would be willing to spend the cash.

The 360's are down to $199.
that’s chump change.
Man up and….steal it from her purse when she’s asleep. If she finds you out, blame the kids. If you don’t have kids, blame the lawn guy.

Wait. Now it's back!
I’m so confused….
"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers." —Rev Halofan
It's not a problem with SBN.
You hotlinked the image directly from a Tripod site, which they don’t allow. So any embedded Tripod image will have that placeholder there.
The problem is that your browser already saw the contents of that picture, so it just pulls it up from memory, rather than redownloading it. You see the real thing (from browser memory), we see the Tripod placeholder.
No, there's no light,

Ah, so the reason it reappeared for me
is because I went to the direct URL and thus refreshed the picture in my browser’s cache?
"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers." —Rev Halofan
Yep.
If I ever directly hotlink images without hosting them on Photobucket or whatnot, I make sure to reload the page without the cache (CTRL+F5 in Firefox) to make sure I didn’t get a placeholder image. Tripod’s nice about it, I’ve seen places where they use really explicit porn as a placeholder, to discourage hotlinking.
No, there's no light,

I'm in Safari, and if there's a way to
reload without cache, I don’t know it.
I did have it drop from my cache, since I saw the non-picture image once. Maybe it just expired. At the moment the owl is back, but I guess he’ll expire again soon.

One of those things that really bugs me is people misusing the First Amendment. It applies to the government, not private places or private means of communication. The dude wasn’t arrested, just kicked out.
Also, uh, Nintendo has every right to delete his hacked Homebrew Channel. The Homebrew Channel is an illegal way to force the Wii to play copied games. Illegal, being the key here.

Dragon Age looks awesome.
But then again, it’s a Bioware RPG, so it has to be good.

Bioware
I love their games for the most part. I’m still trying to decide if I’m going to take vacation days or call in sick in January when Mass Effect 2 comes out.
I bought Dragon Age but I haven’t started playing it yet as I’m still working my way throught Fallout 3 (great game so far) while trying to teach 15 year olds and keep my girlfriend from figuring out that she can do much better than me.
I played multiplayer a little bit on the weekend
on my friends 360. I liked it but my friends prefered Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, losers.

Didn't own my own cube
But my friend had one and we logged many, many hours into Super Smash Bros. Seems to me that Nintendo consoles are more for the casual gamers who like to play some fun arcade-style games now and then whereas the Xbox and PS are for the more hardcore gamers.
I have both an Xbox 360 and a PS3 and the Xbox blows the PS3 away IMO.

You've never played a GTA game?
Wow. Your life is not complete.

Oh wow, I missed that.
Yikes, micdog. You’re missing out.

I'd put San Andreas up there with just about any game I've played over the last thirty years.
Fallout 3 is awesome in its awesomeness, too. Plus any of the Baldur’s Gate games…the original D&D games (Pools of Radiance) with the eight double-sided floppies were REALLY, REALLY good, too. I’d play those bad boys today if I had the wherewithal and understood how to run DOS programs on this computer.

I'm 60 hours in on Fallout 3
and I’m loving it. It’s a lot like Oblivion but the story is better and the game has a wicked sense of humor.
I never played any of the Baldur’s Gate games or any D&D games but I do remember some games on DOS. Do a lot of people still play games on computers?
As far as GTA games I played Vice City (the one that was like Scarface right?) but it just wasn’t my thing.
Vice City...I dunno.
There was something very different about the San Andreas game. It takes place in CA, for one thing. Lots of really good music in the “soundtrack”…wide open game play….the other newer GTA titles (GTA 3 on) all take place in NYC or Miami, and quite honestly, have a much different feel to them.

And upon reflection, I think replayability is huge in my book of best games ever.

I should have known you wouldn't like the GTA game set in Florida
although the soundtrack to that game was retro cool with all the 80’s music.
5th! or 6th! time on Fallout 3….how do you have time to eat or shower let alone work? I’m playing the game as a Mr. Nice Guy so I’m going around trying to always do the right thing. (I guess this means you nuked a certain town then?)
One of the things I like about it is how many situations you can talk your way out of in the game and I love the Blackhawk .44 Magum for when I can’t talk my way out of a jam.
there are TONS of hidden weapons.
unique ones. The world is huge.

Oblivion is probably my number one game of all time
Just for the number of hours I put into it and how addicted I was to it, I still have my game of the year addition and play it every few weeks. I have spent probably over 200 hours on it if not 300. But it is like 4 or 5 years old.
by Twan54321 on Nov 25, 2009 1:16 AM PST via mobile up reply actions
I've played all the Elder Scrolls games and I'd rank Oblivion 2nd out
of the four behind Daggerfall.
I probably put in 100 or so hours on it and I know it was the only game I played for about 6 months as I only play a couple hours at a time these days (damn work!)
Let's not forget about GTA IV.
Yeah, it had its faults, but I’d put it up there with San Andreas.
No, there's no light,

New York.
Felt dirty and constrained somehow—oppressively so. Nico was not the character CJ was. And the “soundtrack” was not nearly as good.

I enjoyed the newest DLC.
The Ballad of Gay Tony is probably the best expansion of any video game thus far.
I don't think I will ever get around to playing a GTA game
There is a lot of “mature” things in it right? Like cursing, slutty ladies, etc? I prefer to stay away from that if I can. The wife doesn’t like those things (she doesn’t like violent video games either but I have to draw the line somewhere!). I know, i know, I’m whipped. But Happy wife = Happy life.

well
it’s a little bit of not owning a system that plays it, trying to be a “good boy” in my own mind, AND trying to please the wife.

I'm pretty sure there's been a GTA on every single system that has ever, or will ever, exist.
Just sayin’.

wrong
GTA has never appeared on a nintendo console. GTA and GTA2 was ported to Game Boy Color, GTA 3 was on the Game Boy Advanced, and GTA Chinatown Wars was made for the DS. I own GBA and DS but have never played a GTA game on them. I have never owned a home console that plays it. I have nothing against the series and I’m sure it’s super awesome.

oh
here is a direct link to the chart that shows each game and what system it was on. Sure it’s wikipedia, but I think a GCN or Wii verison would not be forgotten.

I own three Gamecubes
If you include the Wii’s backward compatibility. Screw all the ’cube haters, that system was great.

I was really amused
by the fact that I played an N64 game with a Gamecube controller on a Wii. Excellent integration, Nintendo.

Loved my GC
Still do, I still play it sometimes instead of using the Wii – first, I have wired controllers so I don’t have to worry about batteries, and 2nd, it’s more “import friendly” since all I need is a Freeloader disc. No hacks or mods needed!
And who can forget the awesome GB Player? I can play my GB/GBC/GBA games on the big screen! Yay pixelation!
agreed
nice article. this makes me wonder though.
The strain of a ballplayer’s life didn’t help. Since he’s on the road eight months a year and Evan (duke’s son) lives in New Jersey with his mother, Duchscherer sees his son sporadically.
I would bet that Duke desires to sign with a East Coast team to be closer to his son, even if he gets less money. We might as well say goodbye now, unless you haven’t already. I would guess the Mets since they need a SP but I’m not sure if the pressure of New York would be good for his fight with depression or his IBS.

I'm thinking Phillies
less media pressure, money’s available, and they’ve got openings in the rotation.
by cityplANner on Nov 25, 2009 11:04 AM PST up reply actions
not doubting you but
which slot is open in the phillies rotation? Don’t they still have these guys?
Cliff Lee
Cole Hamels
Joe Blanton
J. Happ (I though he was in the pen for the playoffs only)
Jamie Moyer (Maybe they stick him in the bullpen)
Maybe Duke would be better than all of them except Lee and it would push a good pitcher to the pen?

Well, for that rotation
I’d slide Duke in behind Lee and Hamels.
Happ had some injuries at the end of the season and showed in the post-season that he clearly hadn’t yet recovered from it. And from their actions at the end of the season, it seemed pretty clear the Phils weren’t interested in having Moyer in the rotation anymore. I could see either him or Happ landing back in the bullpen.
by cityplANner on Nov 25, 2009 11:28 AM PST up reply actions
I guess pitching was/is their weakness
so it would make sense to upgrade. Who knows if Hamels can bounce back from his poor season anyways.

I think you are on the right track though
any team in the NL East is going to spend a lot of time near NJ since the play in the divison so much. And the phillies would be much closer than Atlanta and Florida, and Washington sucks so I doubt he desires to sign with them. The Phillies would be my favorite destination in the NL East, that’s for sure :-)
