Who are the people in the upper deck portraits?
Many times during a game at the Coliseum I've found myself wondering who the portrait paintings were of just outside of the 'smoking pen' in the upper deck around 206. I've asked a few folks over the years but no one has been able to answer the question.
I was thinking the other day after lamenting the many long months until the next A's game, why not ask the good folks at AN.
Its rather sad/ odd given the rich history of the Athletics, Oakland and Philly, that there aren't many ( or any, asides from the mystery paintings? ) historical displays, stat facts, or baseball ephemera at the ballpark. It would definitely be in the interest of the owners dying for new ballpark to give fans a taste of the past and present glory of the team.
However it is a good thing that one only need to stumble over to AN to get some of what the Coli' is lacking.
Sorry if this topic doesn't quite warrant its own fanpost but I didn't want to hijack another thread. ;)

I am trying to remember which portraits you are referring to.
I think I’ve only been to the smoking pen on the other side of the stadium. Always thought it was weird that you can’t take a beer in there.
I'm here to talk about the past.
I think he's refering to these photos I found on someone's Flickr photostream.

According to that person, one is Helvetica, but as for whether that’s true, I couldn’t tell ya. I have no clue who any of them are.
Warning, I think the Flickr account belongs to a Boston fan.
If it is Helvetica, iglew irrationally hates him.

Dude, you're libeling me.
I rationally hate Helvetica only when it is used improperly.

only you think it's rational.

Helvetica could hit, and someone should paint a damn portrait of him,
but if they paint a portrait of Courier outside the stadium, I’m through as an A’s fan!

I wanted to draft Helvetica, but
I got Arial Prieto instead.

I see only two pictures when I follow that link,
and no captions.
But the first picture is Frank Ogawa.

I don't think I ever thought I'd see
Len Dawson, the dear leader and the guy on the 20 dollar bill together in the same sentence. Not a big surprise that it was Mr. Bloom that made it happen though.

Regardless of who all these people are,
I think I speak for all of us when I say that I hope someone personally related to someone painted them. They’re pretty horrific.

Very true,
There really large and pretty hard to ignore, but like I said its the only real personality to the place asides from the quasi Brutalist architecture, vast tracts of foul territory, unending lines, and vendors, vendors, vendors.
I still wish I could have seen this- my first A’s game was in 1998.

They're by local muralist Dan Fontes
He’s very prolific. But his site only describes them as various people connected with the team and stadium.

Sorry you insulted him, or sorry he lacks talent?
And by the way, why is the comment box gray now? Wasn’t it green before? (And does this mean we’re now going to hear from the headlines-must-be-centered crowd about why gray is aesthetically inferior?)

So basically Dan is saying that he doesn't even know who the people are that he painted!

He's the guy who did the Giraffes!!!
the really bad one is the 580 overpass on Grand Ave. I’ve sat at that light and tried to figure out wtf has been going on more than a few times i can tell you.
I'll have a sandwich and a draft(sic). - Bill King (RIP)
And the Zebras!!!
I love the giraffes and zebras!
The one at Grand is with all the performing artists, right? I think they’re all arts groups who were active in Oakland at the time. The conductor in the purple coat on the left is Calvin Simmons. (It’s probably not really purple, but it always looked purple to me.)
Over on the other side the woman at the piano is Mary Watkins. Her latest work, based on the story of civil rights leader Fanny Lou Hamer, is in performance right now with Oakland Opera Theater. You can go see it this afternoon. (Or if you’re reading this later, some time next weekend.)
I worked closely with OOT back in the day and I know several of the people involved, so I’m happy to plug them. They do a lot of innovative, experimental stuff, and when it’s good it can be really awesome. Somebody go and tell me what you think.
