So he can opt for free agency?
Seemed like a fair gamble a couple yrs ago when they traded for him. He was injured at the time, but Reds Minor League player of they yr previously. Jukich and mcbeth didnt end up much for the reds.
Denorfia was out of options so this was expected, Plus the resigning of matt carson a few weeks ago for AAA OF depth.

Yes, he can refuse his assignment to Sacramento and opt for free agent status.

I thought he was outrighted once before, but I stand corrected. Thought by now he would at least be a six-year minor league free agent.
I guess he’ll be exposed on waivers.
Outright Assignment Definition
player assigned outright to the minor leagues for the first time in his career must accept the assignment. Thereafter, a player has the choice of 1) rejecting the assignment and becoming a free agent immediately, or 2) accepting the assignment and become a free agent at the end of the season if he has not been returned to the 40-man roster.
A player with 3 years of Major League service may refuse an outright assignment and choose to become a free agent immediately or at the end of the season.
A player with 5 years of Major League service who refuses an outright assignment is entitled to the money due according to the terms of his contract.

Yeah, 3 years is what I thought the rule was
and I think he’s only got 2 years and a few days of time accumulated.
The rules for minor league free agency are so confusing and seemingly contradictory to me that I can’t make head or tail of them. I guess we’ll just have to see if he pops up on BA’s MiLB transactions blog.

According to Cot's....
through the 2008 season, Denorfia’s ML service time was 2.064 yrs. Does being on the 40-man for the entire 2009 season bring his time to 3.064? If so, wouldn’t he have the requisite 3 yrs of ML service and therefore be able to refuse the assignment?

You need to be on the 24-man roster for service time to accrue

I wonder that the 25th man is accruing.
by LoneStranger on Nov 12, 2009 8:52 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
We don't ever use the 25th man.
He just sits there on the bench accruing dust. But he gets paid well so he doesn’t complain.

The 25th man is day-to-day
but we don’t want to lose him for the full 15 days, so we won’t put him on the DL until day 10 of his injury.

makes sense...
but if you look at Denorfia’s career stats – it’s hard to figure how he accrued 2 yrs of service time. Mauybe he got credit for the whole year (2007) he spent on the DL.

He did
He was injured in spring training of that year, prior to being optioned to the minors.
Odd how getting injured a couple of weeks earlier can earn a guy $400,000 instead of like $50,000. One of those weird quirks in the rules.

And so it begins.....
Things should become much clearer in the next week and a half leading up to the 40Man deadline and the Rule 5 draft.

is the 40-man deadline just for the Rule V draft?
whoever a team is protecting needs to be on the 40-man by November 20th?

Good Move
Frees up outfield space. I was not for resigning Matt Carson, as we will need space for Buck, Cunningham, Doolittle, Carter, perhaps Brown…

Carson's still in the system
but he’s not on the 40-man roster anymore.

Carson is signed
he signed a minor league contract with the A’s and it comes with a spring training invite.

Actually, he signed a major-league contract
and then was outrighted to the minors. He still ends up in Sacramento with a spring training invite, but it makes a difference in his contract status (including, presumably, better pay).

Does that mean Denorfia is no longer eligible?
I was thinking of maybe voting for him somewhere around #37.
