A's Outright Four
Bill Beane and staff got right to work on the off season today by removing Edgar Gonzalez, Kevin Cameron, Dan Giese and Eric Munson from the 40-man roster. No big surprises here. Of the group, I could see Munson returning on a minor league deal. After all, he is Eric Chavez' BFF.
In the first of what is likely to be many moves this off-season, the Oakland A's have outrighted four players off of the 40-man roster: right-handers Edgar Gonzalez, Kevin Cameron and Dan Giese and catcher Eric Munson. The moves leave the A's with 37 players on the active 40-man roster.
more from the article:
All four of these players are now free agents. Oakland has five other players on its 40-man roster who are eligible to file for free agency: Brett Tomko, Bobby Crosby, Nomar Garciaparra, Adam Kennedy and Justin Duchscherer. The A's also have six players on the 60-day disabled list, including Duchscherer. These players don't currently count against the 40-man limit, but they will need to be activated off of that 60-day DL following the World Series. Assuming that Tomko, Crosby, Garciaparra, Kennedy and Duchscherer all file for free agency, the A's will have 38 players on the 40-man roster once the 60-day DL players have been activated.

When someone is outrighted,
does that mean they have to walk the plank, or have they been merely voted off the island?

voted off the MLB 40-man roster...
they can accept the demotion to the minors, but normally, depending on service time, the player chooses to become a free agent.

Still need to relegate 2 or 3 more guys in order to make enough room for Rule 5 protection
I’d say Gray, Marshall, Reineke, Everidge and Carson are easily expendable, which would put the roster at 33. They need to protect at least 3 players from Rule 5 and I think they’ll probably do 4, so that would leave 2 slots for free agents and one for whatever injured outfielder is the Rule 5 Draft pick du jour.
Actually, if Gray’s control is for real, he could have a niche role in a bullpen. I just don’t see any space for him.

I like Gray
He’s shown steady improvement over the past few seasons and Slusser keeps reporting that the scouts love him. And I’ve got a soft spot for Everidge so if he were lost I’d be a bit sad.
"Their batters are patient to the point that it's annoying." -Ryan Franklin
The space for Gray is "depth"
Wuertz’ arm falls off, Devine has a setback, Blevins forgets how to pitch again, Ziggy gets Bovine Flu, Meloan reminds us why he kept getting released, and so on. Gray seems like a good guy to stash away in AAA for when you need him to slide in for someone without much dropoff.

because someone is going to be hurt and going to and some needed to be stashed in Sac

don't forget that...
Tomko, Crosby, Garciaparra, Kennedy and Duchscherer will come off after the WS. They won’t need to bump all those guys. With the guys they cut today (4 – Giese 60-day), the eligible FA (5) plus the guys coming off the 60-day DL (6), the roster will be at 38. They won’t cut Gray, but I can definitely see Marshall, Reineke, Everidge and Carson gone to make room for Carter, Figueroa, Lansford and maybe Wimberley.

forgot DLS....
Also, Casilla and Eveland will be non-tendered or traded. Petit and Denorfia will be vulnerable as well. Regardless, the front office has their work cut out for them.

I don't see Denorfia as a rule 5 risk.
He’s AAA filler now, along with Everidge.
Petit I think will stay on the 40-man anyway, just because he’s a useful third-string infielder to have on hand in case of injury.
I agree about Casilla and Eveland. I wouldn’t miss either one, but if they’re worth anything in trade, so much the better.
I see Gray as trade bait. Not because he’s bad, but because he’s worth more to another team than he is to the A’s. Same with Buck.

Denorfia's in trouble because he's out of options
He’s definitely an outright candidate which I should have mentioned (not favoritism this time… just an oversight).
Petit has an option left, so I can’t see any real reason for the team to cut him at this point. He has enough defensive upside that he’s worth another shot.

he doesn't fit anymore
Unless the A’s trade Buck or Cunningham i don’t see him anywhere near making the team as a 4th outfielder so his days are numbered.
Who's the probable 4th?
Graham Godfrey?
I assume the three are Carter, FDLS and Figueroa, right?
"Go ahead and overachieve, you scrappy Brett-Favre-colored walk-takers." —Rev Halofan
Well, Godfrey, Recker and Wimberly are possibles
Actually, thinking a little more about it, I think they’re unlikely to protect any of those guys. They don’t seem like the kind of talents who will induce teams to put up with them for a full season of sucking, and I don’t think they’re likely to produce enough to earn a roster spot in their own rights.
The A’s might actually be more likely to lose those guys permanently by putting them on the 40-man than by not doing so.

"Outright" as an adjective, as opposed to a verb.
That’s my guess.

Outright as an adjective? What?
Outright modifies adjectives (“an outright nasty fastball”). What is an “outright fastball”? Makes no sense.

What about outright lies?
But as for the Outright 4, I’ll see your “Huh?” and raise you one.
Also outright sales.
Or, more to the point, outright releases.
Of adverb, adjective, and verb, the verb is the most novel use of the word. It’s essentially sports jargon in which “to outright” developed as shorthand for “to release outright”.
I do agree that “outright 4” is a little weird, but ColoradoFan wasn’t saying he’d write it that way, only that when he read the headline that’s what his first thought was.

Not to mention Godfrey has an outside chance at being a decent 5th starter.
I wouldn’t just give him away. He was better than either Simmons or Mortensen last year.
