Around SBN: 2011 In Extreme Home Runs

DLD 10/9 - all goat edition

MLB reminds us that Matt Holliday is just the latest goat in a long string of goats. He's probably being stalked by a snow leopard right now.

There have been two major leaguers named Goat. Goat Anderson played one season with the Pirates, and although his batting average was only .206 and his slugging only .225 (chicks dig the dead ball), his OBP was .343. Goat Cochran pitched two innings of one game, with one K, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned and no plate appearance. Someone should probably ease his pain by making a sappy movie about him becoming a small-town doctor. Just leave Amy Madigan's raspy voice out of it, please. It's only $2 to sponsor Cochran's page (Anderson's is $5!), seems like a good investment as the price will skyrocket when the movie comes out.

Who doesn't love chèvre? In the 8th century, the Saracens came to the west of France and left behind the goats and the recipe to make the goat cheese, says cheese-france.com. You can make a nice holiday salad using chèvre, dried cranberries, and pine nuts. Other good recipes: chèvre with candied figs, a Mexican-flavored "lasagne" using poblanos, goat cheese, spinach and black beans.

Kids of all ages can dress up as goats for Halloween, from Infants to pervy adults.

Mostly, goats are supercute, and Matt Holliday is not. Goats are cute without even trying. Matt Holliday couldn't be cute if he tried. He probably did try.

Lastly here's Nico's page.

Dump your weekend links, kids (get it?).

Speaking of snow leopards… Mac users beware. If you “upgrade” from Leopard to Snow Leopard, delete your Leopard “guest” account first (or make a backup of eeeeeeeverything).

Prithee, be not perturbed by yon third bagger.

The true goat of last night's game

Linda's in the cold ground, won't see her anymore
Somewhere out on the highway tonight, the drunken engines roar
It's just one of those things, one of those things

I hope you are kidding

Sorry, I know you are Mr. Sabermatic and I’m sure you have some great mathy reason for this…

but if Matt Holliday catches a ball, the game is over. Period. He catches that, and Franklin threw a 1-2-3 inning.

..and he kinda looks like he's bleating.

bah!

Yeah, purely a joke

It really is the most goatlike picture of a human that I think I’ve ever seen.

If Holliday made the error when the winning run reached home, then go for it. Blame him.

But it’s not Holliday’s fault that Ryan Franklin allowed four straight baserunners after the error. If Franklin simply stopped one (ONE!) of those baserunners, the game is over. Four straight not-outs is worse than one dropped liner.

Oh c'mon it's all Holliday's fault.

So is everything else that goes wrong between now and the A’s next world series title.

See, I don't know.

You just can’t say “Matt Holliday” with the force and spite required. You can say “Dan. Johnson.” like that, but Holliday just sounds too nice.

I still think it's funny

that being the goat sucks but being the GOAT does not.

I'm here to talk about the past.

I saw George Clooney and Jeff Bridges

and immediately assumed the Coen brothers. It’s not, though.

If Jeff Bridges showed up at my door right now

and told me to come with him, I would go.

This is for 67M

(dark stage, a single spotlight frames LB, staring at floor, he begins to sing)

I was a fool to ever leave your side
Me minus you is such a lonely ride
The breakup we had has made me lonesome and sad
I realize I love you ’cause I want you bad, hey, hey

I spent the ev’ning with the radio
Regret the moment that I let you go
Our quarrel was such a way of learnin’ so much
I know now that I love you ’cause I need your touch, hey, hey

Reunited and it feels so good
Reunited ‘cause we understood
There’s one perfect fit
And, sugar, this one is it
We both are so excited ‘cause we’re reunited, hey, hey

I sat here starin’ at the same old wall
Came back to life just when I got your call
I wished I could climb right through the telephone line
And give you what you want so you will still be mine, hey, hey

I can’t go cheatin’, honey, I can’t play
I found it very hard to stay away
As we reminisce on precious moments like this
I’m glad we’re back together ’cause I missed your kiss, hey, hey

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Ba-a-a-by

Lover, lover, this is solid love
And you’re exactly what I’m dreamin’ of
All through the day
And all through the night
I’ll give you all the love I have with all my might, hey, hey

(spotlight fades, silences, save muffled sobs)

Sometimes goats come back.

Apparently.

I wonder what this one wants.
