Just a stupid idea...

I was reading  a list of 2011 FA, and I noticed Jimmy Rollins will be a free agent at the end of next season.  He has a 8.5 mill club option with a 2 mil buyout.   While I do know that Grant Green is the future at shortstop, there is always the chance that he won't pan out, or the chance that he just won't be ready by 2011 or 2012.

I think that Philly will most likely exercise their option.  However, I think that in the event the Phillies don't pull the trigger that he would be a good fit in Oakland.  2011/2012 looks like a team with very few offensive veterans.  Rollins is an Oakland native, and even if he experiences the statistical dip from NL to AL (especially from a hitters park, to Oakland), speed and defense don't slump.  Rollins has won two consecutive gold gloves at short, and will most likely win the gg this year too.  Considering the fact the A's have adopted a more aggressive style on the bases, Rollins would definitely contribute.    I also believe that in a team that has almost no playoff experience that Rollins will help in the event we make the playoffs.  Granted Rollins hasn't lit it up in the playoffs, .229 BA, .289 OBP, it still might help to have a calming influence on the young offense.

However I think that Rollins career .329 OBP will hurt his value in BB's eyes, and the serious decline in OPS from .875 (career high) in 2007 to his current .719 this season.  Also if Rollins decides to buy out of his contract that means he has reason to believe that the market will offer him a larger contract.  In which case I don't see the A's signing him unless Green and Pennington tank.

In all probability he won't make it to the Free Agent market, and it s even more unlikely that he will sign with Oakland. It is the offseason and I like to peer in the future and speculate.  I'm just interested to hear some of your thoughts on the issue.  Thanks.

The problem I see with Rollins

is that by 2011 his performance will be declining but his salary won’t — in other words, he’ll likely get a big contract even though he may or may not live up to it (and I’m betting on not).

I’d sooner target Hardy because the A’s most need a SS now, and his value is at an all-time low yet he’s not yet in his 30s.

Maybe

In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.

Exactly.

Green might not even sniff the big leagues.

Let’s wait until he’s tearing up AA or AAA before we start banking on him (and even that’s too early)

Same with Weeks.

A lot of the value with Rollins is int the positional adjustment

He’s consistently been a 4-6 WAR player since 2004, but really collapsed this year driven primarily by a horrible offensive season (for him) driven by a low BABIP. A surface reading of the numbers would indicate to me that this could just be a one time thing.

I don’t place a huge amount of value on speed, veteran bats (unless they’re good bats), or playoff experience. The problem is, that many teams do place value on those sorts of things and are willing to pay premiums for them.

There’s a decent enough chance for him to jump back up to his former production levels for a year or two. There is certainly a great deal of value in a defensively strong, offensively slightly above average player at a high skill position.

But it’s not really a buy low and honestly, he’s a 31 year old shortstop.

The optimal free agent strategy (to me) seems to be as follows. Either go low and spend the money on higher risk but higher rate of return players (Russ Branyan, JAck Cust, etc.) or go big and sign a true super star (Mark Teixera, A-Rod, why are all of these guys Yankees?). Don’t waste time in the middle market.

In general

There’s no benefit to looking this far in the future. The odds he’s available at all are, as you say, a lot less than 100%. The odds that we learn something about his game next year that affects this question are almost exactly 100%. It’s just too speculative (especially when we’re talking about a guy with an option for 2011 anyway who has been a franchise player for a franchise’s turnaround).

but there is benefit

to considering other options for shortstop. We’re all ecstatic about the post-BoCro era, but there is a significant chance that Pennington will be just as bad as Bobby next year (but a lot cheaper, of course).

So, while Rollins probably isn’t an option, for all the reasons that have already been brought up, I think the title of this fANpost is probably too self-deprecating. If there are good options for shortstops out there, the A’s should definitely be checking them out.

Either way...

It’s nice when bocro isn’t part of the discussion :) . I’d say Green could be penciled in for mid 2011. I’m not sure if I can see the a’s committing to Green after just one full year in the minor leagues, especially since in Blez’s interview, Beane said that Brett Wallace may need more development, most likely meaning more time at sac. However, Green is probably a better defensive SS than Wallace is a defensive 3B. If Green needs another year and Pennington regresses, Rollins could be a valuable one-year stopgap but only it we could somehow sign him for maybe somewhere in the 7-9m range. Probably not likely but something to think about

I'd like to see what Cliff Pennington

does next year before we just right him off. I thought he played some pretty good baseball for the A’s this season.

At age 25 he hit .279 and showed a little pop and some speed. I think that Pennington might be a good player for the A’s.

If the Phillies

don’t pick up Rollins’ option, we should take a serious look at him.

And if the Arizona Diamondbacks offer Justin Upton his unconditional release, we should see if we can get him for the league minimum.

Yup.

Stupid idea.

The Phillies will pick up his option.

In a sense...

It isn’t a stupid idea to pick up Rollins IMO, I just don’t think its likely. Its just supposed to be a fun discussion. I think sometimes people forget that half the fun of being a fan is to speculate, and baseball is supposed to be FUN! Come on, read the title of the post.

Speculation is fun and is what being a fan is all about.

Or so I predict, anyway.

There are two things that come to my mind

First: Phillies are going to exercise his option.

Second: Rollins is overrated. He always was, even when he won the NL MVP in 2007 and he’s especially overrated now with his hitting abilities melting like ice in Arizona and him still getting all the love for being “heart and soul of the World Champions” and other Jeteresque anecdotal bullshit. In my crystal ball I see Rollins as one of the most grossly overpaid players of 2011-2015 period.
