Rule 5 Protection?

Howdy All

Well i am not sure about anyone else but somehow the postseason does not seem alluring without the A's involved, so i thought i would embark on my own little rosterbation attempt. ( My first! Dad would be so proud!)

However before i can complete it i would like to know how i would find out which of our prospects need Rule 5 protection this year as i am not familiar with the rules exactly. Could someone please direct me to the right place that i can access this info?

Appreciate it

Which of our prospects need Rule 5 protection?

Most players only do Rule 4.

Rule 5? That’s naughty.

I’d do rule 8, but substituting midgets for monkeys, in order to circumvent local laws.

Most of our hitters have trouble reaching first base!

Basically, we're talking Chris Carter, Fautino de los Santos, and Pedro Figueroa

or, as he would like to be called, “#7 prospect in the California League” Pedro Figueroa.

Yeah, I’m surprised as you are. Although John Sickels nailed him before the season started.

Anyway, I don’t think anyone else really warrants protection. Sulentic isn’t yet eligible. Neither are Simmons, Brown, Cardenas, Donaldson or Doolittle. Jared Lansford just sucks. The only really borderline case I see is Corey Wimberly, and I think he’s ultimately safe to expose, as he’s unlikely to stick for a full season on an MLB roster.

I’d be pretty surprised if Lansford isn’t protected, especially with Italiano and Webb gone.

You seriously think another team is going to say "Yes, please take up a spot on my active roster for a season"

for a relief pitcher with a career K/BB ratio of less than 2 to 1 in the minors?

Frankly I’d be inclined to let them and take the $50,000.

but I don’t think the A’s will chance it. He was plenty good in 08 and hurt last year. He’s got stuff.

I'm willing to say with literally 100% certainty that there will be a better player than Lansford

on the waiver wire this offseason.

Really the only reason why the A’s would potentially be at pains to keep the guy around is nepotism. And, well, that’s not a good reason, so…

re

You’re being way too hard on him. They would keep him around because he throws a 95 mph sinker and he’s 22 and has some projection left. Also, I repeat, he was good in 08, and he was injured this year (and the season wasn’t entirely wasted, he pitched well in the second half). Do you think they started him in Sacto this year because they don’t have confidence in him?

by AgitationStation on Oct 6, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Lansford was a little injured this year

It was nothing major but the biggest problem came with the mental part of the game. The A’s didn’t get into specifics but reading between the lines it sounded as if he needed to toughen up. They specifically said that Dave Stewart (his agent) was a great resource for him to turn to for help. I gotta believe the minor league coaching staff is teaching the pitchers how to build a game plan, so calling in Stew is all about attitude and demeanor.

I can't find a list anywhere, but

as I understand it, a guy is Rule 5 eligible if he’s been around for more than four years, unless he was signed at 18 or younger in which case it’s more than five years.

So basically you’re looking for someone who signed in 2005 or earlier. Other than the ones Paul already mentioned, I can’t think of anyone who isn’t already on the 40-man roster.

Gregorio Petit

I thought he was still on the 40-man roster, but I don’t see his name there. I think that means he’s eligible if anyone wanted him. Right?

So if any of those guys like Petit, Buck, Carson, Everidge, etc, get pushed off the 40-man for any reason they would be rule 5 eligible, right?

Good job, Paul

I researched this topic for an article a while ago and I’d definitely vouch for Paul’s list of guys. I’d also say Wimberly is the 4th-best available player, if the team were to make the decision to protect four instead of the aforementioned three.

Then again, what do I know? Last offseason I wrote an article suggesting that the only Rule 5 eligible player the team would add to the 40-man roster to protect was Brad Kilby. They didn’t do it, and he went unpicked. Although, I still think he should’ve been.

The best-case scenario is that the team doesn’t add Wimberly and he is ignored in the draft, just as Kilby was. We’re going to have a bit of 40-man roster crunch this offseason, I think. Right now there’s 46 guys on there, and you have to budget for DLS, Carter, and Figueroa, as well as probably 1-2 free-agent pitching depth signings – whether it’s re-signing Tomko or Duke or some other cheap unheralded arm.

I wonder how much Tomko's going to cost...

not that I want him…

I also wonder if he’s turned a corner mechanically and he’ll be a decent pitcher for the next few years…

8-10 Guys need to go

from the 40-man roster to get down to 40 by opening day, according to nsj, and I agree. It will be fascinating to see how BB removes those 8-10 excess MLB players, and what he gets for them. Or if they just get sent down to Sac. Even with that, we may still lose one or two guys to Rule 5.

But at least, then, we can relax, with our future championship roster in place.

Oh, wait! At the end of the 2010 season, Simmons, Demel, Cardenas, Doolittle, Brown, Donaldson, Desme? Carignan? will all be Rule 5 eligible. That could be 8 more cuts to the 40-man roster then.

Not all of this will work out just this way, but quite a bit of it surely might.

We could end up with a 2011 roster containing perhaps 30 or so minimum wage guys, or at least low arb salaries. I wonder what the all time lowest 25-man roster salary is? We will be close in 2011.

by redtopcowboy on Oct 6, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

The 2007 draft was really a rather remarkable one

The A’s had 8 picks in the first 5 rounds, and there isn’t a single one of them who you can genuinely write off as a bust at this point. Right now there are probably 3 of them who wouldn’t get Rule 5ed (Horton, Banwart and Carignan) but they could totally play themselves back into contention at this point.

Could be tricky to deal with, though obviously it’s a good problem to have.

eh

Banwart and Horton, definitely not rule 5’d. Carignan, though? It was just recently that he was a solid contender for a Sept. callup. Now, everything I hear about his injuries sounds like the usual BS lets play around and refuse to admit his arm is really messed up, but if he honestly is healthy next year, I don’t see how he isn’t on the 40 man in 2010.

by SeanR on Oct 6, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Naw...Billy will do another one of his "consolidation trades"

That was at least part of the spirit of the Holliday and Hairston deals, for sure. Trade a few guys who have positive trade value for a more established, valuable player, clearing a few roster slots to give opportunities to guys who currently have very little perceived value.

Beane is usually very good about this. He deals a guy like Italiano, who would’ve been Rule 5 eliglble, to acquire a much better player in Hairston (I realize Hairston has been a disappointment, but you see the point).

Now, it makes sense for a barren team like the Padres to protect Italiano. For the A’s, it would’ve been a harder decision. Thus it makes sense to make a deal and consolidate your talent.

Expect the same thing to happen once or twice when these future crunches arrive.
