McGwire to Join St. Louis Cardinals as hitting Coach
I saw Tony La Russa's press conference on MLB Network this morning and he is coming back as the manager of the Cardinals next season. But the bigger news is that he is going to have Mark McGwire be the hitting coach.
McGwire did not attend the press conference but the media had a lot of questions about him. I wonder if this will be a distraction for the Cardinals? Maybe only in the begining of Spring Training. I also wonder if Holliday had anything to do with this or if this makes St. Louis a more interesting choice for Holliday to sign a multi-year deal with? LaRussa has always been a big supporter and fan of McGwire so it's unlikley Holliday had anything to do with it.

Matt Holliday is reported thrilled.
In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.
they're also gearing up to sign,

although there is a lot of OT discussions(spelling?) as well.

Yeah, I heard this last night, and it amused me somewhat
most of the national reporting of this has been on that drugs thing, but the Holliday angle amuses me far more
What, does McGuire think his eight year self imposed exile
was enough for sports writers to totally forget about the steriod thing? I guess he figures 99.9% of fans don’t care and don’t want to hear about it so that makes all the difference.

It was amazing how many times I misspelled his name in the post
and then went back to fix it. It is kind of tricky to type.

You mean Tobey's NOT going to be the Cardinals' hitting coach?

On a related note
I was surprised to see that Tobey is in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I'm glad to see Big Mac back
I don’t know what he did or didn’t do as a player and frankly I’m at the point I don’t care anymore.
I always enjoyed watching him play and I thought he also did some really good work with some of his charities so I hope things go well for him in St. Louis.
I’m sure the San Francisco Chronicle and especially Gwen Knapp will now write 437 columns about how McGwire and steroids are the most evil thing ever but I think most people are ready to move on.
Yep
I was going to type some little rant about this. Even including the “Gwen Knapp is overcompensating for her lack of scruples in regards to Barry Bonds” phenomena. But I see you already did it.
Also, with all the stuff that has come out abotu folks we absolutely KNOW did it (Barry Bonds, Manny Ramierez, David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez, Jose Canseco, FP Santangelo, Adam Piatt, Miguel Tejada, Paul Byrd, Jason Grimsley, Roger Clemens, etc.) I really don’t care who did it anymore. Looks to me like it was pretty rampant, even scrubs and part time players were doing it.
While that doesn’t excuse taking drugs to hit the ball harder/throw it harder/recover quicker it does minimize the impact of actual performance a bit. If everyone was taking them there wasn’t a problem with a “level playing field.”
What Gwen Knapp needs to overcompensate for
is her lack of talent.

So...
What’s going to happen when, as a hitting coach, he kind of has to be available to the media? Is he going to have a handler shoo away any reporter who even hints at asking about the past?
Day seized!
I read today he did not even show up to his press conference announcing he had been hired.
LaRussa did it instead and employees in the Cardinal organization are forbidden from talking about MCGwire to the press.

where did you read that?
perhaps in this very fanpost ; -)

You should get a press pass for when the Cards come to SF and find out.... :)
There's no crying in baseball!
If they're smart
They’ll use the winning formula. Come up with 2 or 3 canned answers to all steroids related questions and repeat them till the reporters stop asking. Nobody asks Arod about steroids any more. There are a ton of political examples.
I'm glad the Cards hired him and not the A's

I know this is off topic but
does anyone know why Chris Carter hasnt played in Mexico since Oct 17?
nevermind, he went home with an illness may return to Mexico
his last game though was nice, 2HR
That what I was guessing the other day
totally unsubstanciated. But there is no way he could play if he did get one of those bugs. If I could have left {undisclosed central american country} when I got one, I would have.
Him and Tony are butt buddys
Maybe he’ll teach them to eject roids

Apparently Tony LaRussa and Mark McGwire have taken so many roids
that they eject cream and clear out of every orifice?
And your dream, absolve.
And your path, dissolve.

Are you saying it don’t work for you? It should go to Tambo’s quote that said “WTF danmercury?!?!?!”
Doesn't work for me, either

It's hilarious
to listen to A’s fans rip Tony LaRussa and Mark McGwire when they’re the reason why Oakland won a World Series in 89. Yet you cheered for the roiders Giambi and Tejada when they were here and didn’t have a problem when Giambi came back and I’ve seen plenty of comments of people who want Tejada back.
McGwire did what everybody was doing and we won a World Series because of it, get over it. The guy isn’t a child molestor.

I, for one, did have a problem when Giambi came back,
and I’m sure I wasn’t alone.
When I first heard the McGwire news, I didn’t even think of steroids at all. I thought of how many of us suspected it was McGwire who messed up Holliday’s swing so that he sucked for the first half of the season.

Mark McGwire was a fun player to watch.
Maybe he’s a good hitting coach. I’m glad he’s getting a chance.
Tony LaRussa is a pretty decent manager. In a couple of years when the A’s are ready to contend and ready to shake off the shackles of the Bob Geren Nanny State, I wouldn’t mind seeing Mr. LaRussa come home to the Bay Area and guide the Athletics for a year or two to end his career.
Of course, I’d prefer Geren to get hit by the genius stick, wipe that mouthbreathin’ scoop hole off his face, and turn into the second coming of Whitey Herzog. But what the hey?
