Open Thread - ALCS Game 4
I hear yesterday's game between the Yankees and Angels was pretty exciting. So was the one between the Dodgers and Phillies.
Too bad I missed both of them while in the midst of sleeping the better part of 18 hours following some dental work. Since I'm still pretty loopy from it (a combination of conscious sedation and removing three wisdom teeth will do that) there's a good chance I'll be sleeping during most of this one as well.
The National League is off today so we've just got one game on the schedule, starting at 4:57 down in Anaheim. As a sidenote, I've never understood why the start times for these playoff games are like that. Does it really make a difference?
CC Sabathia gets the start against Scott Kazmir. Sabathia is working on three days' rest after dominating in Game 1 while Kazmir's last outing was a struggle in the ALDS clincher in Boston on the 11th. A New York win puts them in control of the series while the Angels try to even it up.

Umps after made such a good call at home plate
Completely blow the call at 2nd and give the Yankees an extra out.

Then they give it back on the early departure call at 3rd
Pretty close on that one.

I like how he folded the towel afterwords and just put back up behind the seats
to be used again. I think we now know why flu bugs can spread through an entire team
We're just waiting for the swine flu to hit my school
if it happens I’ll get the swine flu shot if they get it out in time
Can I just suggest you do some research before deciding, sirbed
1. The swine flu is mostly media hype, no worse than any other — there are flus every year and people die from flus every year, mostly the elderly and those with horrible immune systems
2. They don’t know the effects of vaccines 15 years later when they give you the shot.
Just do due diligence before doing something you might regret.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I'm only going to get the shot if we really start having problems
mainly because I don’t want to make any of my students sick.
Right. The point is that there's nothing special about this flu
It’s just yet another strain, like there are every year, that most people won’t get. It’s only “remarkable” because the media says “IT’S THE SWINE FLU!!!!1111111”
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
Actually, this isn't the case
This is a new strain (the first “new” strain since the 1919 outbreak), and there is the potential that it could kill a lot of people. The fact is, people have become immune to the hype because of previous scares, but that doesn’t mean there’s not good scientific reason to be concerned
I don't know. I happen to have a couple friends
who are pretty high up in the medical field and they roll their eyes at the hype. I predict it will kill a lot of people about as much as the world fell apart on 1/1/2000.
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
The fact is, scientists can only express this as a range of possibilities
(rather like predicting batting averages in the next year, perhaps).
To say that it’s all media hype is rather misleading; the fact is, there’s a chance that it could be a serious epidemic, just as there is a chance that there is not. Indeed, I do hope that you are right. But does that mean we shouldn’t take precautions?
This article from earlier this year does a pretty good job at looking at how the thing is expressed
If the precautions came
a. for free (in the medical sense, not the financial sense) and
b. without hysterical exaggeration
yes, precautions are good. You could have said all the same things about Y2K which “could have been a big deal” but…actually really was an exaggeration that made the media a ton of money but didn’t really help otherwise.
Anyway, we’ll all have our different perspectives on whether the chance it’s an epidemic is 1 in 3 or 1 in 3million. I just hope everyone stays well and makes good choices about how to react to the “possible epidemic!!!111”
I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I think, when it really comes down to it
is that the media doesn’t deal with science in a particularly coherent manner; something is either going to happen, or not going to happen. If it does, scientists are right, if it doesn’t scientists are wrong.
This, in turn, leads people to overly panic when scientists express risk, and then to be frustrated afterwards if it doesn’t happen. Are you annoyed when you safely cross the road? And yet, there’s still a degree of risk (I don’t me you, in particular, but in a general sense).
Anyway – this in turn leads us to dismiss expressions of risk, but in our recent experience, they have proven unfounded.
I agree, incidentally, that the state should be providing vaccinations, for free; I believe that it’s part of the social contract we have to preserve the wellbeing of the people, as well as making good business sense, if it keeps people at work.
But then, I also believe that it’s everyone’s responsibility to get vaccinated against diseases, as appropriate, thus ‘drying up the puddle’ and helping to stamp them out.

I like Cindi. A. She never pretends to know more than she does. B. She has unbridled enthusiasm for her "Hotties," and isn't afraid to show it. -IM4Oakgal
I don't think the media is evil (well, not all of it)
but more that it’s run by journalism students who hated science and math lessons when they were at school.
As for the chicken; you see an obstruction, I see dinner.
legal practice
suffers from the same problem… the hating math and science problem… not the chicken problem. Only the chicken truly suffers the chicken problem.

"Whenever I’m about to do something, I think "would an idiot do that?" and if they would, I do not do that thing."

I agree with you on the hype
especially since flu kills people every year. Like I said it’s not my biggest concern but some of the people at the school are acting like we’re all going to die!
When 30%+ of the student population goes out
it should be a pretty big concern. But definitely not the “we’re all going to die!!!!” sense.

Partially why I'm not either
But mainly people tend to overdo sanitization making them less resistant to even the smallest bugs. Screws up the immune system.
CuttheMullet, from "The Thread":
"Whenever I’m about to do something, I think "would an idiot do that?" and if they would, I do not do that thing."
so just curious..
what “causes” allergies? Cuz my immune system thinks everything is a bug. I only develop symptoms from the most vehement bugs… but I look like I have a cold 50% of the year.
"optimism 1 pessimism 0" ~Dirk
Santization and immunization are rather different things;
On the whole, immunization shots are one of the greater successes of the modern age.
When was the last time you heard of someone die of smallpox, for example?
oh no, totally
But your ability to fight off major bugs is reduced when you’re keeping your body from the practice of fighting off minor bugs. And you’re much more likely to get the bigger bug if you’re body doesn’t handle it properly with the smaller one. I’m not discounting immunization on the whole by any means. But there is a risk/reward involved and if your system isn’t well prepared to handle bugs, you should probably get the shot because you’re body will be less able to fight it. If you’re system is strong, the odds of getting it and/or getting it really really bad are less so you have less need for it. Something like small pox that’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to treat well, it’d probably be really dumb not to get it.
CuttheMullet, from "The Thread":
"Whenever I’m about to do something, I think "would an idiot do that?" and if they would, I do not do that thing."
I'm not sure that this is strictly true
Else, why would have life expectancy improved as hygene has improved?
Naturral immunities are built up, but that’ll only stop you getting the same disease again; viruses mutate, and due to the nature of this selection process, will be resistant to the phages and keys that your white blood cells have developed to fight them.
This is why you keep getting the common cold, for example. Not because your body didn’t build up a way of fighting it, but because the virus that causes it is a slightly different strain than one you’ve had before.
Your core point is, of course, correct; if you’ve never had any disease before, and were released into the world, you’d basically be fucked, because you’d immediately catch everything out there. So in that respect, exposure does help you, as it lessons the chances of you getting multiple illnesses at once.
Well there stupid and and then there's overdoing it
Life expectancy improved, in part, by better hygiene. Don’t eat shit off the floor. Don’t touch things that attracted bugs, etc. That’s still important. But people who use the heavy duty soaps after touching anything and everything are doing more harm than good because your system still needs to be active. It just doesn’t need to be overactive by being overly sloppy.
CuttheMullet, from "The Thread":
"Whenever I’m about to do something, I think "would an idiot do that?" and if they would, I do not do that thing."
I honestly don't think they're doing themselves any more harm
Except by wasting their time and depleting their bank accounts.
The practice is, for the most part, pretty futile, unless you really did lock yourself away.
I think we basically agree, but you think it’s a little more dangerous, I just think it’s pointless. There’s not an ocean between us, really
Agreed
Dangerous is definitely the wrong word. Just more harmful. I’ve seen studies that suggest this. I seriously doubt it’s a life threatening sort of thing. Just more “prone” if anything. But we’re definitely not really disagreeing with much.
CuttheMullet, from "The Thread":

don’t they know where they are?
The Yanks should let CC hit
Just for giggles.
Oh, and Swish can pitch.
With Giradi as the manager that could happen as he does a triple switch in the 8 inning
with 2 out and nobody on
i was trying to take a nap but it's too cold
i think i have to turn on the heat for the 1st time this fall
We need a topic that's not the game
(because even those of you watching the game don’t have anything to say about it).
So: anyone here watch “Glee”? I’ve been enjoying it, for the most part. I’m a sucker for song-and-dance in pretty much any form, so this is right up my alley.
yeah, gotta watch baseball while you can.
I watch online too. I really love Hulu, especially as I am TV-less. What did we do before TV on the internet? Ah yes, VHS… glad that’s over with.

well you and your DVR
are just too cool for school Hulu then.

I have single-tuner DVR
I find I watch more online and the DVR stuff stacks up like netflix DVDs.

I've not been watching Glee
but I am watching 90210, now.
mmm, glossy.
I am also making no progress actually doing any work
weirdly, they just made a reference to Dawson's Creek
why not just flash up a message and tell me I’ve wasted my life, it’d be quicker
outside of
Mad Men, House, The Daily Show, and baseball… I don’t watch a lot of TV.
"optimism 1 pessimism 0" ~Dirk
I don't watch Lost, but the other two are good
I ‘work’ at home, so I tend to have the TV on to distract me during the day
If I worked at home I'd never get anything done
and it would be hard to have 25 students in my condo
And episode of Glee is like an really short "after school special"
with singing, dancing, and better writing (most of the time).

There we go.
Nice play by Aybar!
Something worth commenting on….finally.

I know certainly do

Given the fact that virtually EVERYTHING in the 2009 baseball season
has gone the opposite of what I hope for, I’m not holding my breath.

I don't know
The giants not making the playoffs was something that worked out well for me. I’m hopeful.

I was kinda torn on this
I would quite liked to have gone to some playoff games here in the bay.
Though, I would probably been rooting for the visiting team (non Dodger caveats apply)
And it'll be more satisfying than seeing the slegnA beat them.

Disagree
But my Yankee hatred is great enough that I’d have no trouble rooting for the Dodgers in an LA-NY World Series.
I think I’ve figured out that my worst case scenario is actually slegnA-Dodgers, since I can’t for the life of me determine who I’d want to win it.
Since I hate the Yanks worse than anyone, their presence in a series vs. the Dodgers would actually awaken a rooting interest that I’d miss were the two LA teams playing.

Just saw this over at SB Nation
Yes, from the "if it was anyone else, this would probably be satire" file comes the latest from Manny Ramirez, who didn’t watch the Phillies’ ninth-inning comeback Monday night. Why? He was showering up.
Aren’t you supposed to WANT to root your team on? Aren’t you spozed to support your teammates?? Typical Manny…..what a jerk.

Reading Halos Heaven you’d think that the Slegs lost 2-1 or 3-1, REv has it that the umpires handed every call to the Yanks and that’s why the LAAAAAA lost… whatta sore loserino, wow. I’m like, wait a minute, your starter got thwacked like a pinata and CC was lights out and you lost 10-1, no umps-as-decoders there if you ask me, and I didn’t even see/hear this game.
