DLD - 10/02/09 - Twins Drama, Celeb Gossip, and Rotten Tomatoes

There is actually a decent amount of stuff to link today.  A ton if you like links about celebrities gossipy stuff.

Star-divide

First some baseball.

The Twins are angry at a rookie for throwing at a batter . . . and he is on their team!

Young believed that Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman(notes) hit him in retaliation for a 94-mph fastball Twins rookie reliever Jose Mijares(notes) threw behind Adam Everett(notes) the previous inning … because he was mad the Tigers were stealing bases when trailing by six runs.

I can see getting mad if a team was stealing bases while ahead by 6 runs, but I have never heard of a player getting mad for stealing while trailing.

This comes after a fan on the internet accuses the Twins' Joe Mauer stealing signs and tipping pitches.

One problem: The Twins say it’s a bunch of malarkey

I watched the fans video and could maybe see what he is talking about but I tend to agree with this

Kubel laughed at the implication that Mauer was tugging at his helmet as a means of subterfuge. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire denied it, saying with such obvious sign-stealing “somebody would get killed.”

Now to the Celeb gossip.

David Letterman admits to having sex with female staffers (ABC video)

He did it because a producer from 48 hours was trying to extort $2 million from him with evidence of the affairs.

Here is the AP story for those who don't want to watch a video

Jon Gosselin wants to stop having his kids on TV

That probably should have happened already.  As soon as Jon and Kate started having marital problems they should have stopped filming.

Rio de Janeiro gets the 2016 Olympics.  Chicago didn't even get past the first round.

Rottentomatoes picks a movie to best represent each state in the USA

My favortie picks:

Idaho - Napoleon Dynamite

Kanas - Wizard of Oz

Oklahoma - Oklahoma (natch)

Oregon - The Goonies

The saddest picks IMHO

 New Jersey - Clerks

Utah - Broken Arrow (the Travolta/Slater movie, OK action movie but not that great overall)

Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)

Best Reviewed Movies of All Time

This list is jammed full of old movies.  I think there were only 3 or 4 movies made after 1970 on this list and one of them was Toy Story 2 (huh?). Nowhere on the list is any of the LOTR movies, I'm not a super geek (OK that is up for debate) but at least one of them should have been in the top 100.

A Hard Day's Night (1964)

I will admit, I have never even seen this movie.

A poll about movies would be ridiculous.  But it would be interesting to know what everyones favorite movie is. I personally can't pick just one but my answer used to be Armagedon with Bruce Willis. I don't think that is true now but at one point it was.

gotta like Westerns or at least Clint Eastwood to like Unforgiven.

But I love how the movie start off on a slow roll and just picks up steam and explodes in the end.

I love Eastwood and westerns so it was right up my ally. Gene Hackman (my favorite actor) is awesome in that movie.

Would you believe?

The statue place next door to my sign shop was once bought by one Paul Reubens for his brother. In fact, that ill-fated arrest and subsequent public humiliation and crucifixion took place RIGHT HERE! In lovely, lovely Sarasota. This place is truly vile.

Keep in mind that Rotten Tomatoes ranks these lists based on their Tomatometer.

Which simply counts the percent of reviewers who liked it vs. ones who didn’t. The films that hit the crazy high echelon on the Tomatometer are movies that everyone likes, but the tomatometer doesn’t care if a bunch of critics really loved it. Everyone likes Toy Story 2, but I doubt anyone loves it enough to put on a top 10 list. Hence, the 100%.

true
We’re using a weighted formula that adjusts the Tomatometer scores to account for the different number of reviews for each film as well as the average amount of reviews for older movies. And no film with fewer than 20 reviews qualifies. Thus, while most of the movies on this list are at 100 percent, a few other classics with perfect scores are absent (sorry, Jaws. Tough break, T2: Judgment Day).

Also, wow. Shawn Chacon wanted by police.
According to a report by the Las Vegas Sun, police in Nevada have issued a warrant for the arrest of former big league pitcher Shawn Chacon for a $150,000 gambling debt owed to Caesar’s Palace. He’s being accused of taking out three $50,000 gambling markers in March and hasn’t repaid them, which in Nevada results in a felony charge that is prosecuted as a bad check.

I was mostly upset they referred to our team as the "River Rats."

Although if Chacon is arrested, Gonzalez is denied arbi, and Eveland is out of options we are running out of #8 starters.

It’s not Hitchcock’s best, but the concept he was going for a the restraints it put on his filmmaking style really make it an interesting watch

It just made me remember "Strangers on a Train"

which was also awesome. I had heard that it tickled Hitchcock to no end that Farley Granger (a very gay man) was playing Guy Haines, the straight-man-hero-lead part, and that Robert Walker (a very straight man) was playing the main antagonist (of very dubious sexuality) Bruno Anthony.

I could see Hitchcock getting his jollies off of that.

Also, Marnie is really under rated. You get to see a very young Sean Connery as a dashing sociopath.

There are so many brilliant Hitchcock films

that it would take a whole thread just to discuss them. Rope is a terrific piece of filmmaking, and John Dahl’s performance is great (Farley Granger is very good, too). Of the ones that don’t get mentioned much, I’d also name The Lodger, Murder!, The Wrong Man, Marnie, and Frenzy.

I thought the voice over gave it sort of a noir feel

kind of like a Bogart movie set in the future and it helped me understand what the hell was going on.

I can think of several alternatives to several of their suggestions. I think Fast Times would’ve been a much more appropriate CA movie, and Matewan was JUST OODLES more West Virginia than any piece of shit movie Matthew McConaughay’s been in.

But the most surprising thing for me was that Fight Club was supposed to be set in Delaware. I always thought it was Chicago. I’m not sure why.

the other Illinois related movie that came to mind was the Untouchables (or some other Chicago gangster movie… it’s not a genre that I know much about). Astoria, Oregon is the where they "lived"

but not necessarily where they shot. A lot of the exteriors were filmed off the Washington Coast, including the final scene being shot on 2nd Beach. I’m sure they shot some in Oregon, just a lot of it was Washington.

indeed. there’re some unintentional gems in movies dubbed for TV. repo man has the classic “flip you.” fast times has a “piggy” when she’s very clearly mouthing something else. love those. wish i had a list of just those.

Has anyone heard of TV Guardian?

link

It reads closed captioning and filters out offensive language (works best on DVDs). Most also have a setting the displays the caption with replacement words. It makes for some entertaining moments.

John Goodman's yelling the real line pretty clearly and violently.

I mean, you can watch the movie on mute and it’s painfully obvious what the line is. Apparently that was the only thing that at least halfway meshed with his lip movements.

i rate a movie on how many times i can watch it without getting sick of it

i watched 3 of these (again) this week alone. one of them twice.

the best movies have the best soundtracks:
-repo man (#1 all time my favorite and i’ll suspend any disbelief, especially about the huge plot hole in the middle, because it’s just an awesome movie and even pauline kael thought so, so there. and i’m damned surprised by the lack of repo man quotes on this site!)
-the harder they come
-rock and roll high school

the obvious:
-dr. strangelove
-easy money or caddyshack (depending on how pure you like your rodney)
-pee-wee’s big adventure
-blue velvet
-blazing saddles/young frankenstein/high anxiety
-first 3 cheech and chong movies
-fitzgeraldo or aguirre (depending on how insane you like your single-minded pursuit)

the obscure:
sans soleil (don’t worry guys, not expecting quotes from this one)
-performance (most things by roeg actually -
he just knows how to translate a subconscious feeling onto the screen)
-3 women (kubrik, yeah, sometimes i’m not as interested in plot as i am in imagery)
-myra breckinridge
-a bashing success (the story of the ‘88 oakland A’s)

not that it’s obscure, but that you’d be surprised a guy like me has them memorized and runs around the house absentmindedly singing the tracks:
-hairspray (original version)
-grease (though i guess it’s just fun to watch, not that it’s a good movie)

don't care if i ever get back.

Rock'n'Roll High School

I love the soundtrack (same with Repo Man and The Harder They Come, of course), but the movie is really not good.

Also, I found out last night that a friend of mine works for a company that repos trailer homes. I asked him if he follows the repo code, but he didn’t know what I was talking about.

I'm with you on Tarantino, although I do enjoy his movies on a very superficial level.

My main issue, aside from his obnoxious personality, is his lack of inventiveness or a unique message. He pulls so much from other films that it’s no wonder his own movies resemble a smattering of incoherent scenes pasted together randomly rather than a movie with any sort of plot or purpose. It seems to me that he has nothing relevant to say and nothing new to add. He’s content cutting and pasting from cinematical history and slapping his name on it. Of course, he does this really, really, well but none of his movies really leave me with a lasting impression.

Its crucial in the DFA dating playbook

especially since I usually meet the girls I date at dance clubs, so a Moma date lets a girl know that im classy in addition to a good dancer. Plus when you meet someone at a club you don’t really know if your intellectually compatible and I am a firm believer in the idea that how you experience modern art tells you a lot about a person.

I don't blame you.

It’s almost to the point where it’s physically painful to watch. But it’s an amazing work through and through, from every aspect and angle. I’m particuarly in love with the acting. All four leads are tremendous, but Ellen Burstyn’s monologue around halfway through (if you’ve seen it, you know the part) is legitimately one of the greatest acting performances ever.

sturges was revealed to me this year. i love finding a whole director’s worth of great stuff like that. makes you think, “oh, i’m not done exploring yet.” very funny up front, rich plots, and lots of mental satire-sorting in the aftertaste. recently watched unfaithfully yours — there’s a line in there that the cramps stole. “put on the purple one, with the plumes at the hip.” (put it on upside down, you know that really makes me flip.)

How could you even imagine that you're done exploring?

Even if you watch two movies a day — which is about a fifth of your life — you still can only barely keep up with current production, to say nothing of making any headway in the 80-year backlog.

I honestly have trouble understanding how some of you guys find time to watch so many movies.

But not in the same numbers.

I don’t read 50+ books a year, and I don’t see 50+ plays/musicals/operas/ballets a year either.

It’s October now, and so far this year I’ve seen only six theater shows that I can remember (maybe one or two I’m forgetting), and I’ve ready maybe about 15 books. How many movies have you seen? From this discussion it sounds like hundreds.

I don’t disagree that movies are art, by the way. I actually like movies, and I wish I had time to see more. I just feel like I can’t keep up with the rest of the world unless I give up everything else.

I stopped buying DVDs a while ago but I just moved out of the parents house and started dating more. When you are young, single, and poor, a proper DVD collection is very important. The Apartment is one of my favorite romantic comedies.
A girl I’ve been seeing came over recently and was perusing my collection. I noticed she had Heat and American Psycho in her hand and I started to get a little worried. Fortunately, she’s cool as hell and said that we need to watch those some time because she hadn’t seen them yet.

I don't know but i wouldn't call it a romantic comedy

We don’t know at the end for sure if they end up together, one thing i like about the movie is how dark it was, nothing was black and white. Hey C.C. Baxter was lending his apartment to his bosses, so they could use it for sex, so he could get ahead in life, and in a 1960 movie to boot.

it would appear that Tedford rolled over and died, himself.

At least, that’s what I gathered after a field goal attempt with 12 seconds left in the half and at least 2 more potential plays before kicking.

Of course the FG was missed.

I just went and saw Zombieland (after the A's game)

and absolutely loved it. Funnny the whole way through and not as gory as I thought it would be (which is good for me). It wasn’t heavy handed like some zombie movies can be (it doesn’t go the Shaun of the Dead way).

warning: it was definitly geared towards a younger demographic

Also, one of the greatest cameos ever by Bill Murray. Which makes me wonder why no one has mentioned any Bill Murray movies as their favs?

Bill Murray is in that one.

Also, no one has mentioned it yet, but Ghostbusters!!!

Yeah, I think PT would hate that movie. In fact, I’m at odds as to explain why i like it so much. But I do.

Well, in my case it would be because I hate BIll Murray movies.

Not sure if I actually hate him or just hate the sort of characters he always plays.

The whole “I’m an asshole fuck-up but you should love me anyway because, gosh, I’m so lovable” thing really doesn’t work for me.

I was conflicted about Amadeus.

I love the story, but it was annoying in the same way as all those faux history epics with Mel Gibson or Russell Crowe, where half-wits show up in the history groups trying to make historical arguments based on what they saw in the movie. Uh, hello, it’s fiction.

The Amadeus story is brilliant, though. It was Pushkin’s inspiration before it was Shaffer’s.

there are worse things in this world than confusing people about history.

and the subjective nature of that particular subject is problematic to begin with…

Now, confusing people (intentionally?) about current events does tend to be much more of a crisis.

Yeah, I know, and

movies like Master and Commander or Braveheart undoubtedly teach more than they unteach. Still, it’s irksome when you’re trying to explain something about, say, the Napoleonic Wars to someone and they can’t get past the fact that that’s not how it was in the movie..

Kingdom of Heaven was not a great movie, although I found it enjoyable

but one thing I can say is that it was remarkably accurate for a Hollywood historical movie. Perhaps too much so, actually.

A bit late for this party:

1. Dirty Harry
2. Goldfinger
3. The Good The Bad And The Ugly
4. The Enforcer
5. The Spy Who Loved Me

Yes, I love Clint Eastwood and James Bond movies.
Nothing else compares IMO.

I also like wacky 1970s sci fi and blaxploitation movies, but haven’t seen many.

Apparently, I missed a bitching movie thread while I was out at Cal-USC/lovefest/bluegrass festival this weekend.

So, I’m obviously late on this but I figure I should submit my list anyway, for posterity. I tried to make a top ten but it was too hard and I figured that was an arbitrary cut-off point anyway, so here’s my top twelve:

(in no particular order)
1. Rear Window
2. 12 Angry Men
3. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
4. Running on Empty
5. Bicycle Thieves
6. No Country for Old Men
7. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
8. Dumb and Dumber
9. La Dolce Vita
10. Unforgiven
11. Once Upon a Time in The West
12. This is Spinal Tap

And top five documentaries:
1. The UP Series
2. Hoop Dreams
3. Encounters at the End of the World
4. American Movie
5. The King of Kong

And three new releases that are very good and I highly recommend if you’re not sure what to watch next:

1. Adventureland
2. Doubt
3. Sugar (a great baseball movie – very appropriate for the frequent AN visitor)

by LongLiveLangerhans on Oct 5, 2009 2:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

did you see the whole festival?

by LongLiveLangerhans on Oct 5, 2009 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I mean that I'm extremely sad that I also did not get to attend the festival,

mainly owing to the fact I reside 3,000 miles away, but also because I didn’t even know it was going on until yesterday. Did you go all three days?

Haha ok.

I’m still decompressing from the weekend. I totally misconstrued your “sniffs”. No, I only went one day, I would have gone saturday but I am a masochist and decided to head to Berkeley for the Cal game.

You’re in Florida, so you’re much closer to year round bluegrass. No need to cry.

but but but but but

John Prine, Steve Earle, OCMS, Todd Snider, Robert Earl Keen, Aimee Mann, Del McCroury, not to mention the tons and tons of pure legends of the genre…I would’ve lived there for three straight days.

No Country for Old Men was quite awesome.

The Coens threw out all of the weird humor they usually do, and just made a fantastic, intense, super-serious thriller.

but of the two movies about psychopaths set in the southwest that came out that year, There Will Be Blood edged out NCfOM, at least for me.
