Rudy Jaramillo needs a job!
Rudy Jaramillo is unemployed! Bring him to Oakland, Billy!
Rudy Jaramillo, the long-time hitting coach for Ron Washington's Texas Rangers, has parted ways with the organization after rejecting a one-year contract offer. This story was repoted at espn.com, and hopefully this link will work...Anyway, he has hepled make good hitters great in Arlington for a long time. Perhaps he could make our mediocre hitters a little better in Oakland. We couldn't expect the kind of results produced by the Texas offense for the last 15 years, because we wouldn't be providing Jaramillo with as much talent to work with, but any improvement at all would be more than the team has displayed under Jim Skaalen. It's just too bad that it was just announced that Skaalen will be back next season...it's the GM's prerogative to change his mind, though, given the availability of an obviously better candidate. Who wouldn't love to see Carter, Wallace, Cardenas, and Donaldson resemble Texeira, Kinsler, Pudge, and Juan Gone in terms of production?
Hire this man, Billy! Bring him to Oakland!

I'm fine with Skaalen
I’ve always envied Jaramillo, but lets be honest, its not realistic here. Plus, he isn’t exactly known for his work with young guys – more the established big guns.

Hasn't, you know, ARLINGTON made good hitters great in Arlington?

This.
Arlington’s a launchpad — in the same realm of the launchpad at Coors.
Not gonna happen.

Rudy couldn't help Texas
during their August -September swoon. They went how many innings?? without scoring, even against the rookie Oakland A’s staff?? Rudy even held a meeting, imploring guys “not to try to do too much…” < that sounds like standard “hitting coach” fair. No “Arlington magic” in those words.
I would have agreed and been enthusiastic about getting Jaramillo back in say, June 2009, when the A’s didn’t seem to have an answer. But for the post-AS part of the 2009 season, Skaalen did better, Jaramillo was unable to motivate guys (at least, so say the evidence…lack of run support).

Getting Jaramillo
who coaches hitting in Texas is like trading for a Fenway hitter and expecting the same results in Oakland. A major problem for A’s hitters is their home park, Skaalen finally got the guys to hit up the middle and the results were quite good from July on, for all except guys named Hairston and Cust. The problem in Oakland is not the hitting coach.
I long for a day when the A’s play in a ball park where hitters are not penalized so much. I am not sure the A’s pitchers will look forward to that day. Our pitchers always appear to be better than they are and hitters worse than they are.

I was impressed by Skaalan.
Jaramillo’s good too, and if we had Hudgens or Bosley or Perry I’d be clamoring for Rudy, but given the current situation I’m fine with the status quo.

Jaramillo will probably get a managers gig somewhere.
Now if he wants to take Geren’s job im fine with that.

Now there's a thought.
Incidentally, anybody else find it weird that Rotoworld put the coaching staff being brought back next year under the “Andrew Bailey” heading?

Naah,
generic posts about the team always default to whoever’s name happens to be at the top of the list. We saw that a lot last year, too. I forget whose name it was then.

Where are the metrics for coaching?
Sabrmetrics got hitting down over the course of the last 30 years or so. And quantum leaps (insert Scott Backula jokes here) in defensive metrics in the past, say, 3 years. Has anyone attempted a metric for coaches/managers? I’m of course very open to the possibility that this sort of thing cannot be measured, but who knows.
Relatedly, why don’t teams employ more coaches? Are there limits (other than payroll) to how many coaches a team can employ? It seems like some, for example, hitting coaches are going to succeed with different players, and vice versa. Football employs seemingly a million coaches per team: on the offensive side alone, you have a quarterbacks coach, a receivers coach, a line coach, an offensive coordinator, etc. The newest wrinkle being “”http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/sports/football/27quality.html" target="new">quality control coaches."
Baseball coaches seemingly do more “double duty” – or at least some do, having to man the base coach positions in addition to other jobs. But maybe this isn’t a good thing. I suggested something similar the other day in the thread about strength/conditioning coaches.
Players in individual sports like golf and tennis employ swing coaches. Coaches will often only have a handful of clients at the most (at the upper echelons). At 12-15 hitters, perhaps hitting coaches are “overworked” in the sense that they can’t devote sufficient time to each player, and they therefore can’t know how best to maximize each player’s swing. (Should they be able to? I think that’s a different question).
Given the frustrations of AN over the past several years with the coaching staff, perhaps it’s time we more systematically thought about revolutionizing that aspect of the game. Sure it’s worked fine until now, but there’s no reason why it can’t get better. I think there are myriad ways in which the coaching aspect of the game could be changed to improve performance on the field.

"Bring your hands forward like this..."
“Cool, what about my front leg? Would a toe tap help?”
“Ooh, that’s Frank’s department — he handles lower body. Frank!!!”
It reminds me of physical therapy, where I’m in for my left leg but ask about my neck and am told “We can’t discuss your neck or work on it because your prescription is only for your leg.” When I ask, “Are you fully qualified to treat my neck,” I’m told, “Oh yes, absolutely.”

That's not really what I meant.
More like…
Grouping like hitters together in small groups and having them work exclusively with a single coach.
But you do bring up a potential drawback.

I think that honestly choosing coaches (not necessarily the manager, but certainly the off-field coaches)
is something that the A’s front office is in just an irreconcilably better position to do than us fans. Who knows what a hitting coach does that’s good or bad. We can make guesses, like the toe-tap thing, or we can be frustrated because it seems like guys should be hitting better, but in the end, we have no idea.
I don’t know who the A’s hitting coach should be, and I don’t see any reason to try and surmise, because I know nothing of the choices.

the Cubs just dropped their hitting coach
and Milton Bradley had his best year ever under Jaramillo. Plus, the guy makes 700K a year, so the cubs would be more likely to drop that kind of cheddar than the Giants

time to wrap this thread up
The Athletics announced Tuesday that their entire coaching staff will return intact for the 2010 season.
That includes bullpen coach Ron Romanick, bench coach Tye Waller, third base coach Mike Gallego, first base coach Todd Stevenson, hitting coach Jim Skaalen and pitching coach Curt Young, who is in his seventh season. Manager Bob Geren will also be back for his fourth year with the club.
