2010 Community Prospect List - #8

For Reference: Scout's Mid-Season Top 50.

Star-divide

I would just like to point out that I am very happy with the turn out, as well as the cases for players on the list thus far, and look forward to more of it in the future, especially as we get lower with lesser known prospects.

Poll is going to dwindle due to lack of suggestion for players to be added. Keep suggesting! I might have the poll fall back down to 5.

Want to look back at past votes? The link for the poll that each player has won is next to their name along with the percentage of the vote that they won at time of call.

Don't forget to list players in comments that you believe should be added to the poll soon!

Star-divide

The Minor League season has ended, and Winter Leagues are still a ways away. So what do we have left to do but tally up our Minor League experiences and take a look at the state of the A's Minor League System.

If you want to view Last Year's list, check here.

The qualifications to be voted onto the list are simple. The player in question must be eligible to win a Rookie of the Year Award for the 2010 season-that is, he must be a rookie to start the 2010 season. Well, not quite. To make it simpler and not have to count days on the active roster, we will be going with 130 AB or 50 Innings Pitched.

Lots of players have graduated from last years list, such as Cahill, Anderson, Mazzaro and Outman to name a few. Several others have upped their prospect value while others have fallen. Its our job to figure out where they stand.

The list will probably go on to 50 again like last time, though it really depends on how far AN wants to take it.

So argue out which player you believe deserves the spot for the list. Bring out the stats, the scouting reports, and the pictures (I'm looking at you flashfire!).

If you think you know a prospect well enough, write a scouting report with your supporting stats and I will put it into the thread for the next vote, either for the player's Bio after he wins, or for his bio for voting.

If you think a player deserves mention, or should be put on the next prospect vote list, or prospects that should be kept track of, put them in the comments (and preferably mark them clearly) and they will get consideration. I expect the top of the list, as with last year, to go rather smoothly for the first few players, but it gets more difficult as it goes on, and its up to you to bring prospects to light so that we can all see them. Just ask Anthony Capra, last year's #46 (and this years much higher) how important that is.

Votes will last a few days per round, or until a clear winner has emerged by landslide.

Age is entering the 2009 Season.

I'm tempted with ...

Ynoa and Brown, but my gut tells me that Doolittle should be #8. He receieved so much love here last year at this time. I understand he lost the season due to injuries, but I don’t think any of the above guys have showed more potential.

Doolittle

I am a big fan of Doolittle, but I think you have to say he has fallen a bit this year for two reasons.

1. Part of the reason I loved him last year was his ability to play corner outfield and 1b and hit with pop. Sort of like Nick Swisher before him. But his knee injury this year has me wondering if he can really play outfield for an entire season.

2. The knee injury had him miss basically an entire year of development. Adding to that missed year is my own personal disappointment at his injury in the wake of a promising Spring Training. It makes it hard for me to be excited about him, irrational as it may be.

by jeffro on Oct 14, 2009 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Why would one random knee injury make someone unable to play the outfield for a full season?

That doesn’t make any sense. People come back from ACL tears all the time, and that’s way more severe than what Doolittle suffered.

Paging Dr. Thomas...

I find it distressing that knee tendinitis, something that is caused by inflammation and usually cleared up within a week or two using ibuprofen and ice, had him out for virtually an entire season. Full Disclosure: I am not a physician, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Chronic knee pain as the result of tendinosis sounds more likely and that is a different bird altogether.

Like I said, I am not a doctor, nor do I have the benefit of a stay at the Holiday Inn Express, but I am skeptical that he really had a random bout of 4 month long tendinitis.

That’s all.

I agree with you. I’d almost rather a guy tear his ACL or get Tommy John than have a nagging injury that was projected to take 2 or 3 weeks and just never healed. If Doolittle ends up getting to winter ball and succeeds, I’ll be over it – but nagging injuries, esp. on young prospects, turn me off.

Agreed

I am looking forward to him having a good “off season” and arriving in the Bay Area sometime around June next season.

It wasn't tendinitis

I can’t remember what the actual injury was offhand, but I know that the “tendinitis” classification was not correct. It turned out to be like a ruptured disc or something.

Not quite the same, but maybe out of very similar material/structure. And they function to do the same thing.

However, FYI, Doolittle did have Knee Tendinitis in 2007 as well. So, I would classify this as a recurring injury.

It was initially diagnosed as tendinitis, but

later it was determined that the patellar tendon was torn. Several injury reports call it a torn tendon, as Google will readily demonstrate. Sean himself discusses it in this blog entry from May 24.

So now , what?

A torn tendon is better than an inflamed one? And the fact that he had knee problems in 2007 is irrelevant? It could be if it was the other knee… I am too lazy to look it up.

PS, Iglew, your link doesn’t work it just takes me back to the top of this thread?

In any event… I hope he has no long term knee problems and he can play left, right or where ever.

Nope

I am not a doctor. I wouldn’t pretend to know which one is “better.”

I have had “tendinitis” that eventually was diagnosed as tendinosis in my wrist. The original pain started in 2004.

Playing guitar is what seems to aggravate it most, and anytime I play now it still aches. So I was just concerned, albeit with little direct knowledge of Mr. Doolittle’s circumstance, that he may have a similar problem in his knee.

Actually, I think it kinda is.

A tear can be repaired, it takes longer to heal, but there’s a definite/specific injury and not just “it’s irritated and inflammed”

Remember how long Huston Street was out with an “irritated” ulnar nerve? At least with a tear, you go in for surgery, get fixed, and have a timetable for return.

See

I am admitting I have no idea on this and asking the question. I imagine some tears are much worse than inflammation, especially the kind of inflammation that goes away after some ice and ibuprofen or tylenol or whatever.

I never take tylenol anyway. I was just saying… You know, if you have a muscle injury that requires a pill and ice and it gets better, you probably would prefer that to a torn tendon.

Like I said, I am not a doctor and I didn’t stay in a Holiday Inn Express.

by jeffro on Oct 15, 2009 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, completely.

However I’d hate to have an “Irritated Nerve” that kept me from doing my job for an entire year without actually having a timetable for being healed and just being told “Keep resting and we’ll look at it again in 6 weeks” or something.

unless, of course, you tear something like your achilles tendon

That takes a LONG time to actually heal up enough to use (assuming a complete tear). And then, because of the muscle disuse, you have to actually train it up again. Maybe it has more of a definite time table, but it doesn’t allow you to do many baseball related activities, so not only does your fitness suffer, but your baseball skills erode. Not a great combo, in my opinion.

Not that tendinitis is fun, but I’d rather take ibuprofen, rest, and ice over surgery and recovery any day.

Still voting for Doolittle

Have a feeling I’ll be voting for him for a while but I still like him just a bit more than the others on the list.

If we’re still looking to add new contestants I think Ben Hornbeck would be a good addition. Capra has been on for a while and I think that he and Hornbeck are very similar prospects. I have Capra a bit ahead because of scouting opinion, but I think their profile and performance are similar enough that if one goes on, the other shouldn’t be far behind.

by OkayJay81 on Oct 14, 2009 10:27 AM PDT reply actions

After the current options I think Spencer would be my next addition.

His Midland numbers are neither eye-poppingly good nor toe-smashingly bad, but I think being able to hold one’s own in AA is important, and he should get at least another half season to improve on those numbers. His K problem isn’t as bad as that of Carter, Desme, or Brown, although he doesn’t have quite as much power as those guys.

His problem is neither Ks nor power

but rather a. plate discipline, and b. defense.

His best-case scenario is a sort of poor man’s Kendry Morales. He’s probably in the 20-25 range for me.

Well you are probably higher on some lower-rated guys upside than I am.

I’d say a poor man’s Kendry Morales is pretty good for someone you’d rank in the 20-25 range. And if I’d rank him higher than that, its because I can’t think of too many folks after the current options (which would take us to #15) who should go ahead of him. There’s DLS, and I could see myself going for Krol before #20, but who else? Hornbeck hasn’t pitched above A ball and his fastball tops out at 88. Dixon’s offensive suckitude in Vancouver is more than can simply be explained by trying to hit in an extreme pitcher’s park. Coleman had a terrible season with the glove and didn’t hit well after May. Leyja didn’t handle 2B much better than he handled SS. We can split hairs on these guys’ upside, but to suppose that someone like Dixon or Leyja is going to be better than a poor man’s Kendry Morales seems to me like it would require an imaginative amount of projection at this point.

Brown’s up next, then Leon. Doolittle after them. I think Ynoa finally gets on after that. After that I have no idea at all.

We actually agree on how to rate these three fellows. Brown, Leon, Doolittle

by jeffro on Oct 14, 2009 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Vehemently disagree on Ynoa

I like that he is so projectable due to age, size and raw ability. However, with so many years left to get through the injury nexus, the elbow injury that has stalled him all season in 2009 and a lack of any and all track record in gametime situations, I cannot vote for him when the A’s have so many other players who can rate highly.

This spot is between Doolittle and Brown for me. Both have knee injury issues. Both have high ceilings in my opinion. Both have shown the ability to perform at a high level yet both have some questions about whether or not they will make the necessary adjustments to take their game to the next level. I voted Brown, but ask me in 15 minutes and I might say Doolittle. I think Brown has a bit of a higher upside due to his better game power (although Doolittle is still adjusting) and his ability to play CF. On the other hand, Doolittle is a year younger, playing at a higher level and putting up similar OPS numbers (and more power may come later due to aggressive promotion and short time as fulltime batter).

This is exactly correct

(In my opinion).

I think the real kicker for me was the fact that Corey Brown is playing a plus defensive position. Doolittle, at his ceiling, will play a corner OF position.

For me, with Ynoa,

the lack of experience is one thing, the arm injury another. But the two together? I can’t rate him that highly yet.

Throw in the fact that Ynoa has never pitched professionally AND has an injury

I would take that bet and probably give you decent odds on it.

For those poker players…you’ve got them mixed up. Ynoa is less of a sure thing than Corey Brown (if only for age, injury, and oh yeah, never pitched in the minors ever).

Of course, Ynoa could make it in either as a reliever OR a starter, but to be perfectly frank…if Ynoa is making it in only as a reliever, it’s a bit of a Pyrrhic victory, you know?

No pitchers so far

That must be a first for the A’s. Just shows 2 things most of the best prospects are up already and there is no stand out left. It has been a bad year in the minors for pitching. Injuries and struggles has most of these pitchers down. Simmons, Leon, and Ross are the only outstanding ones and none are #1 potential. H-rod is so up and down. My bet is the A’s go heavy on pitching in next year’s draft.
