OT: Is the Bay Area big enough for 2 NBA Teams?
In light of San Jose's attempt to woo the A's from Oakland, The SJ Merc recently reported that the city hopes to also relocate a NBA team to its city. What do you all think? There are rumors that SJ is looking at the Kings as a prime team to move. Is the Bay big enough to support both the Warriors and the SJ ______?

Bay Area
I definitely think it’s big enough for two teams, but I don’t want to see another team in the Bay Area. I don’t care who moves to San Jose if anyone does. I’ll still be a Warriors fan.

Yes
We barely have one now.
Keep in mind, of course, that "the best defense of Derek Jeter's life" ranks somewhere in between "the best fiscal responsibility of Mike Tyson's life" and "the best not-getting-assassinated-ness of James Garfield's life." -FJM

Um...this is Athletics Nation right?
Of course it’s tempting to post about different sports here on AN because the people on this site are so much smarter than the other SBN blogs.I’d love to find half as many good fans on the Raiders blog as there are here on AN.
As far as the Kings leaving Sacramento at the end of the day I don’t think it will happen as Sacramento has proven they can support a team.
Arco Arena is past it’s prime but if the Maloof’s want a new arena they need to find a way to pay for it besides getting the city and county to cover the bill.
Maybe they should spend less money on strippers in Las Vegas and put their money to better use.

Figured since the A's season is over
A discussion about a potential future home of the A’s in San Jose would be fair territory. The OT label is used sparingly, yet at this time should be fine in the off-season.
Interestingly enough, the vote is split. Frankly, I’m not a huge NBA fan so I went the April 5th route. Regardless of my vote though, within the last 20 or so years is really making a strong attempt to make itself a prominent sports-franchise city.

I'm not knocking you asyouwish33
I was just being a brat with the title of my post. Like I said in my post I understand wanting to post on this site about issues beyond the A’s.
I voted for bring on the 5th as well as my interest in the NBA has gone way down since I left Sacramento.

The Maloof's blew it from a PR perspective.
For years, Arco Arena was sold to fans as THE BEST place in America to watch an entertaining basketball game. Then a series of events conspired to doom the building (in no particular order):
Declining product + poor PR + apparent greed = loss at the ballot box.
Of course, someone recently said to me, "I’ll bet if you let the Maloofs put a casino in a new arena they’d build it themselves.

There are cities out there that already have built new arenas. Kansas City. San Jose.
Sacramento keeps dragging it’s feet…

Good for Sacto.
In 2008 I was watching a team that was rebuilding. In 2009 I feel like I'm watching a team that just sucks.

What's the deal with San Jose
They keep trying to steal teams from other Bay Area/NoCal cities. If you’re in need of an NBA team you should have lured the Sonics (or join the race to lure the Thunder once they realize that OKC is not a market). Don’t poach the Kings from a city that can support pro sports (see: Kings when they were good, RiverCats since they moved to Sactown).

The Sonics
Larry Ellison outbid the Oklahoma crew but was denied the franchise because he wanted to move them to San Jose while the Oklahoma crew promised to keep them in Seattle.

hmm, didn't know that
If Ellison is serious about buying an NBA team he should make a serious run at the W’s. Fans would love him.

He has been trying to buy the Warriors for years.
He recently even sat down with Cohan to make an offer. Even though Cohan has the irs after him hard and forbes listed the Warriors at 330 million and going down. He is still asking for over 500 million at this point.

The potential SJ owner was a little to honest about his intentions
And it seemed OKC had the Mo after hosting the NOH for part of a season.
I don’t see it as SJ poaching Bay Area teams specifically, it’s just that the teams mentioned are having difficulties and would make more sense to work with fanbases that are established to work with. I would love to see the A’s move down here, but getting an NBA team in the HPP would be great too.

Gross
I guess it could work, but the Bay Area as a whole seems to be pretty loyal to the Warriors. Why do we need two teams in every sport. Raiders/Niners, A’s/Giants, Bay Area sports fans don’t need another stupid divide.

We don't
I think it is a bad idea to have 2 NBA teams.
Overly simplified logic to follow:
the Bay Area has about 7 million people.
the other “2 team markets” have significantly more. NY has 20 million, LA 16 million. Both of those markets have the potential to have 2 teams in every sport. Chicago is the next largest with about 10 million and they have a single NFL, NHL and NBA franchise.
If anything, the Bay Area could do with one less NFL team to replicate the Chicago market. Census projections have the Bay Area passing Chicago around 2035.
by jeffro on Oct 11, 2009 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes there are only about 7 million people
yes there are less people. But those people in the Bay Area are richer. Forbes has San Jose and San Francisco as the #1 and #3 richest cities in the United States. So there may be less people but there’s more money.

But also less interest in sports (According to the CW ... and born out by attendance)
As well as fewer historical ties — either to the teams or to the localities …

Still
The question for the league is how to best “exploit” that money. I don’t think an NBA team in San Jose really does much for the NBA or for San Jose.
First, from San Jose’s perspective they are creating competition for the Sharks. By any reasonable measure the Sharks are an unmitigated success. Playing a borderline niche winter sport in a warm climate they manage to sell out the building a lot and they have for a long time. Downtown San Jose is a great place to be when the Sharks are playing, there are people everywhere, it is electric. Why create competition for that?
Second, the NBA already rakes in the dough from the Warriors. They draw very well for a team that has only been to playoffs once in the last millennium. When you have a team drawing 18,000 people to watch mediocre basketball, why mess with it? I understand it sucks from a fans perspective (being a one time big Warriors fan and now more of a passive follower because the team sucks so often).
Third, the leagues will be interested in the disposable income and specifically the entertainment dollar. When you factor in 2 NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, 1 NHL team, 1 MLS team and 1 NBA team, plus all other entertainment options there is not a bunch left over for another sports team. There was a great study about this a few years ago that if I had time I would search and post. Maybe I will later… then again Vertig0 could always post it cause I know he has it somewhere.
Last, this isn’t really analogous to the 49ers or A’s potential moves south. In those cases it is a team within the metro being moved within the metro. Existing fan bases for game tv watching, radio listening and seat buying are already in place. Moving a team from outside of the market to compete head to head with an existing franchise is only a good idea in place where there significant numbers of people to offset the change, which is why New York or Northern New Jersey would be an economically sound place to put any kind of sports team. It isn’t just about ticket buying.

Well considering I support the Sacramento Kings I think I would prefer them to stay in Sacramento
Mainly because I am a human being and I hate change.

A second NBA team would probably do just fine from a $ perspective ... it makes more sense than having
two baseball teams … but, you know, the Giants probably aren’t going to move.
Keep in mind, though, sports teams don’t just compete with other teams in their sports (or other fun and interesting to do, locally), they also compete with other sports. The Bay Area has more sports teams (2 mlb, 2 nfl, 1 nba, 1 nhl) than any market but NYC (which is roughly triple the size), which only has an extra hockey team (2 mlb, 2 nfl, 1 nba, 2 nhl).

I'd only add
They have three hockey teams with the Devils (in Newark, New Jersey), Rangers and Islanders.

This is why I play fake online baseball.
1. It’s approximately 500x better than fantasy baseball
2. Full seasons take about 2 months.
3. You get to be a GM as well as a manager.
