Rickey Henderson Denied Unanimous Entry.

if Ripken, Gwynn and everyone else in the modern era didn't get 100%
this should be no surprise. Rickey was very good, no great at his game but not at the overall ambassador level that Ripken was. He’ll be a first ballot choice for sure which is truly deserving.

I can see the argument for Gwynn
due to sustained excellence, but a weak argument could be made that the biggest thing Ripken had going for him was ‘longevity’, which is not as much of a ‘skill’. All that said, Rickey was still heads and tails above Gwynn.

HOF is a farce anyway
but this gentleman takes the cake. Too bad Rickey didn’t play at today’s salaries. He could buy the rights to “Matlock” and make that guy rue the day “he ever messed around with Rickey”.

Feel free to respond to this fogey's column ...
http://www.gvnews.com/articles/2008/12/10/sports/sports03.txt
I’d love to see him write another column explaining how he could justify any of those players over Rickey …

A wildly-flawed system again proves
itself to be wildly flawed???
Only professional sports writers and their acolytes would spend more than ninety mental seconds of concern upon this…
It’s akin to complaining that icebergs calving off glaciers in Glacier Bay Alaska don’t look “artistic” enough for a feature within Glacier Bay National Park.
Complain away, as if it will change anything.
Officially awaiting the 2009 season.

Wow
I read this blog regularly, but as an M’s fan I don’t have much to post here.
I’ve had a lot of antipathy toward the HOF voting process for a long time, but this is above and beyond.
Rickey was always one of my favorites, and I’m very certain none of us will live to see another like him. Cy Young’s wins record is about as likely to fall in my lifetime as Rickey’s bases thieved.
Just so I’m straight about Corky’s ideas…………
Don Mattingly (aka Donnie Baseball!) deserves to be in based on 4 seasons of great numbers? It is sad indeed, he hurt his back and his power evaporated. If not for this he would be probably be a shoo-in. If he wasn’t a Yankee, his name would not likely ever even come up in HOF discussions. Soon we will be hearing arguments for Bernie Williams (aka Bernie Baseball!) as well.
Matt Williams! Matt Williams is a hall of famer? I’ll take Corky’s word that: “Nobody ever played the game with more intensity, nor with more reverence for the sport.”. Perhaps Willie (boom-boom!) Bloomquist will someday have his bust mounted upon the walls of Cooperstown for this very reason. I have no dissings for Matt. He was a good player, but he was far short of HOF good. .317 career OBP.
These two belong, but Rickey Henderson does not?
The best part is Tim Raines. I think he should be in, but if he’s in how can Rickey be out?
Finally there are the absurd numbers Rickey put up. I know numbers aren’t as important as ‘intensity and reverance for the sport’ in baseball, but still. You’re all fully aware of his stats, so I’ll only bore you with one:
In 1998, 39 year old Rickey led the Majors in steals with 66. Since then, that total has been eclipsed exactly thrice and not by much.
Five years from a now there will be at least two or three complete asshats who don’t vote Greg Maddux in. Perhaps the baseball writers should consider pulling the voting cards of those who are demonstrable asshats.
"If my uniform doesn't get dirty, I haven't done anything in the baseball game."

No one's going to get in unanimously...
Ever. It’s just the way it is. The best a Rickey fan can hope for is that he’s the HOF’er that is left off the fewest ballots (maybe he’ll only be left off 3 or so). And the bloggers will be out lambasting those who didn’t vote for him…so maybe after enough ridicule the writers will kick this charade…but I doubt it.

Hilarious!
I almost feel bad for the guy… but he has a HOF vote for chrissake! He’s “not a Rickey guy” apparently, but regrets his decision after getting called out.
