The Starting Pitcher Market

Now that we're seeing prices drop.  I really hope beane has enough money left to get 1 proven SP.

-Right now we got ducherer, who is off an injury but still quality.  Gallagher and eveland dont strike me as better than #3's and very blanton esque.  Gio Gonzalez is young.  Braden I'm not sold on as a starter...Outman I don't know enough about, and Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill are just 20 and only pitched double A, they could use atleast another year.

A starting pitcher on a 1 to 3 year deal who is a proven commodity would be enough to put us in a very competitive situation for playoffs this year, and give your young arms 1 more year to develop.

I heard Ben Sheets was looking at 2 year 20-25 mil offers.  He does have injury concerns but he is a quality pitcher.  Randy Wolf and Paul Byrd are available too.  Anyway I'm having a hard time finding articles on pitchers available and potential suitors/prices for them.

Our current lineup will go:

1 Sweeney

2 Suzuki

3 Giambi

4 Holiday

5 Chavez

6 Cust

7 Crosby

8 Barton/Buck/Cunningham

9 Ellis

a HUGE improvement, and possibly better than anahiems.... if we could get a solid 1 or 2 pitcher (like sheets) or rotation could be sheets, ducherer, gallagher, eveland, braden which i think would be good enough for playoffs.....

Just a note:

when you say “now that we are seeing the prices drop”, I assume you are basing this off of the Giambi and Burrell signings.

It is important to remember that the SP market is different from the DH(/1B) market.

Im not saying that pitchers won’t come at any discount, but I strongly doubt you’ll see anything like the Giambi signing (which Fangraphs puts at roughly 75 cents on the dollar)

no, i saw gammons saying offers for sheets, and others arent what they expected….. because aside from yankees and red sox no1 is really jumping into huge contracts…. look at derek lowe…..

sheets i think is more injury concern though. but i mean guys who would command 12-15 mil are probably more attainable for 8-12

also

is that a batting lineup with cust 6th and crosby 7th? my head just exploded.

Who's Jason Johnson?

I’ve never heard of this player.

If you’re going dumpster diving, get Mulder and Colon, who at least have the upside of #2 starters. Probably wouldn’t require more than $1 million in guaranteed money (plus incentives, of course).

Johnson is the diabetic, tall and lanky,

came up with good stuff but never became more than a #5 starter. I agree – the guys to take fliers on are Mulder and Colon, maybe F. Garcia.

what could have been

Geez, our pitching would look a whole lot better if we still had Harden and Gaudin instead of Gallagher. What was Beane thinking about last summer?

i understood trading harden

cause of injur problem… but i never got gallagher, patterson and murton…. all r mediocre AT best

I don't think the A's feel Gallagher will be mediocre

Mediocre AT best?

Maybe mediocre COMPARED TO best… assuming you mean Jahvid Best…

you can't simply ignore donaldson

and the fact that the harden market wasn’t all that strong. and that it could fall at any moment with a broken something in harden’s body.

"My group runs some frogloks down the hall to finish them off and POP! RASTER! If there was a way to scream louder than caps in EQ I was doing it. Man I am straight panicking because I know I have NO CHANCE soloing and the party has run off. I'm in my hotel room; it's like 5am, and I am straight hollering, in EQ and in real life. Bottom line is the group comes back, heals me, and kills Raster! WOOT!" -Curt Schilling on his favorite memories in the video game "EverQuest"

"a broken something in harden’s body."

is that underneath the strained whatchmacallit?

by mrod on Jan 6, 2009 11:53 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

well,

that technically that’s correct. i should have said a “broken anything” to clarify that anything is liable to break in harden’s body. i shouldn’t have used an actual body part, the “something”, which is underneath the “whatchamacallit” ;)
on a side note, i am no longer a licensed doctor

gallagher...

didnt realize he was BARELY 23. For some reason i thought he was older.

anyway looking up his minor league stats from double A and above (he spend a fair amount of time in big leagues too which is why IP is low for a 2+ year minor league total)
 233 IP
2.82 era
19-10
225 K’s
105 walks…

i take it back, maybe he will turn out to be a better than average starter.

eitherway i’d love to bring 1 veteran starter to the staff w/ duke, gallagher, eveland, braden/gonzalez
