DLD 1/05/09: Giambi Preparation Edition

I've never done this before, so I apologize if I'm stepping on anyone's toes, but we haven't had a good DLD in a while, and Urban's recent release that the A's are close to signing Giambi to a one year (possibly two) deal with Giambi felt like a good enough impetus:

Everyone's favorite Jay Mariotti is now writing for AOL Sports:

Baby Mangino looks to pull over Buzz Bissinger for Deadspin's "Sports Human of the Year Award."

Joe Sheehan of BaseballProspectus still hates the Marlins:

And finally, ESPN is reporting that Milton Bradley has agreed to a 3 year deal with the Cubs.  I still wish we had Ethier.

Interesting point

Buck sticks, but presumably neither Barton nor Cunningham does unless he’s assure substantial playing time – so unlikely both are on the opening day roster. And a chance that neither is, particularly if Buck has a breakout ST. Then Denorfia, Murton, Davi or Patterson makes it as 4th OF.

I think Barton and Buck both make the team

Even in the unlikely event that everyone is healthy, you have 6 “starters” (Holliday, Sweeney, Buck, Cust, Giambi, Barton) for five positions, with a reasonable defensive alignment no matter which of them is sitting out. That’s easily manageable.

Sending down Barton would mean Giambi is the only 1B. No, Hannahan doesn’t count.
And Cunningham needs to play full time in Sacramento for at least another couple of months.

Thanks for tomorrow 'cause I've had enough

by andeux on Jan 6, 2009 10:36 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Barton has to be a starter somewhere.

If he’s not starting in Oakland, he damn better be the full time starting 1B in SacTown. He needs to get regular everyday ABs, as should Cunningham.

If someone gets placed on the DL and everyone shifts, Barton can very easily be called up, as he is on the 40 man and will stay there.

Hannahan is defensive sub only, but he’s just fine for a utility player.

Agree aside from Hannahan. I’m hoping Baisley is able to be the A’s corner IF sub.

If the A's can build around Holiday, Furcal, Cust, and maybe call up 2nd baseman Wes Childs at some point in the year, they have a shot to take a weak AL West. -- jameersju post on ESPN.com

That's exactly right.

The odd man out here is Rajai Davis.

Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.

Davis in a way does not have a spot on the team anymore

Davis’ value was that he could be a Late Inning Defensive Replacement and Pinch Runner, basically for Cust.

But Cust DHing, and the 4 OF we have are all good defenders and good runners, so there is really no need for Davis. It would make more sense to carry another OF who has a better bat, maybe a Platoon bat, that can pinch hit and play managable OF defense. Murton would be nice in that role if he remembered how to hit for Power, and Chris Denorfia could do that role very well as the Backup CF with a good RH bat.

Status of the TV negotiations: All games to be on CSN California?

At the end of the CC Times article about the radio change and Giambi:

The A’s are still negotiating to switch their television rights from Comcast SportsNet Bay Area to Sacramento-based Comcast SportsNet California (formerly CSN West).

Pries said a deal could be reached by the end of the month, and that there’s a strong chance it would be exclusive with CSN California. That would eliminate the possibility of a station such as KICU picking up some telecasts as it has for the past several seasons.

This isn’t really a surprise. The major issue is probably getting CSN California (which carries the Sacramento Kings, blacked out in the Bay Area, and quite a bit of college basketball) onto the “Expanded Basic” tier on cable systems in the Bay Area. Right now it’s on channel 400 on Bay Area cable systems, so you need digital cable to get it.

I heart Dish network

regular and HD on my expanded service.

How do you like u-verse? I have almost signed up for it twice, but they still can’t me comparable services to what I have now with Dish. What experience I did have with their customer service was a nightmare and I am now scared off of looking into it again…

I actually really like their service.

Coming from a combination of DirecTV, ATT DSL, and ATT POTS, I’ve gained HD service, DVR that I can watch anywhere in the house, a faster internet connection, and unlimited phone service, and my monthy bill DROPPED about 30 bucks.

by mikev on Jan 6, 2009 12:38 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is about what I was hoping for.

I have ATT Dish, ATT DSL, etc. and it looked like would get everything I have now, a few extra channels that I preferred, and drop $15-20. But when the guy came out to the house he told me they don’t have the whole house DVR in my area yet. And that is a deal breaker. With dish right now, I have DVRs in all the rooms and can pause TV and record in any of them. From what they told me, even the whole house DVR u-verse has right now doesnt do that.

I may get the courage up to try it again later this year. I just have to let the wounds heal-thanks to the brainiac who came out to set me up, I ended up with my dish, DSL, and home phone disconnected 2 times each in 6 weeks.

The whole home DVR thing is pretty sweet.

The only part that’s a bit of a pain is that you have to schedule recordings from the actual box with the DVR on it.

However, you can also access the DVR through the web, so I can log into it from work and set it to record Heroes if I forgot to do it.

CSN California

need to have it on the digital starter pack. It’s currently on a higher tier, so those just getting the standard digital package don’t get it…

by gigglingone on Jan 6, 2009 12:15 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think there's a good chance it ends up on Extended Basic

they’ll probably move it to Channel 41 or such, right after CSN Bay Area, to keep the Sports Block together.

Comcast could even do another one of their channel shuffles and re-organize everything again. They can stick WGN together with the Turner stations and USA instead of the high 70’s, they can stick Versus with the other Sports channels, E! with MTV, etc…

They need to put csn CA on basic for basketball

I got it in Tahoe and watched the Cal games last weekend, but it looks like I might be in trouble the rest of the season. If the A’s make this deal, I’m sure they’ll do that…

I was wondering about Reno/Tahoe and other Charter areas, mikeA

Were you watching on Charter Cable, and Charter carries that channel? Or were you on DirecTV or Dish? I wondered if there would be a battle between Comcast and Charter over getting the channel onto Charter cable systems.

If they can get CSN California onto the basic tier, I will be very happy

because a bunch of Cal’s basketball games have inexplicably vanished onto that station this season.

If they can’t, yet move channels anyway, I will be very irritated.

Sacramento Bee story, with quotes

I’m surprised by this; a coach who is demoted from third base coach to first base coach during the season and then “reassigned” at season’s end usually turns up with another organization the following year. But by all accounts he did a great job in his previous time in Sacramento, so if that’s where he wants to be, it’s good to have him back.

can someone please explain this to me

quoting that d-bag from elephants in oakland:

Jack Cust is an albatross. Do you really want to give up 25-30 runs on defense for the 10-15 you gain with his offensive offense over Travis Buck?

Consider this game theory; Cust was able to get on base by walking a lot. The reason was the A’s offense was terrible and coupled with Cust’s high strikeout rate teams would pitch to (and around)him. Cust hit his share of garbage pitch homeruns and some mistake pitches. With Matt Holliday and Jason Giambi in front of or behind him how many teams will bother to strategicly pitch to him? Most will feed him a steady diet of fastballs up and breaking balls in and the Jack Cust from short stints in Colorado and Baltimore will return. Perhaps Forst realizes this and Cust is not in the A’s plans past June.

i have never before seen the argument that cust will suck if surrounded by good hitters…
