Why no Andruw Jones Talk?
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/01/dodgers-deal-wi.html
With LA and Jones parting ways and our history of cheap veteran pick ups, I was just wondering why no one's suggesting Jones to the A's. He'd be a Frank Thomas-type risk/reward with a cheap contract and would give us a right handed bat to plug into the line up behind Giambi (assuming we get him).
I myself wouldn't mind a 2-5 line up heart of Cust/Holiday/Giambi/, Jones (L-R-L-R). As for the "outfield is crowded" believers; with the the exception of Holiday I don't see Buck, Davis, Sweeney putting up 30-100 seasons next year (if ever) as Jones has averaged during his career even with last year's joke of a season.
As an A's fan I doubt this (and much of the ideas discussed here) will happen, but I'm just surprised no one was talking about.

Sorry man
This guy isn’t who he used to be. He can’t hit and the word is he has packed on way too many “lb’s” to be that defensive stud he was earlier in his career.
I think we need to continue to focus on 1B, SS and maybe adding a veteran P.

10-year borderline HOF candidates don't forget how to hit certain pitches
He he wasn’t catching up to a fastball, that might be a sign of being old. I’ve never seen or heard about guys losing the ability to hit breaking pitches because they’re old. If he drops the weight, he should hit again.

I wouldn't mind him in CF. Sweeney is hardly a sure thing. Neither are Buck or Cunningham in RF.
For that matter Holliday could be traded. He’d be a better OF option than Denorfia.

He's a HOF candidate not solely, or even primarily
because of his hitting. His career OPS+ is 111. Good, but hardly an indication of being a great hitter in an absolute sense.
Jones is a HOF candidate because of his D, and being a very good hitter for the position he plays.

Oh, I know.
But he was still a pretty good hitter. I mean, I’d rather have the good Andruw Jones than Torii Hunter. And I think the only thing keeping Jones from being good for a few more years is the weight. That’s all I’m saying. Doesn’t mean the A’s should try to get him.

If he loses weight and shows commitment to staying in shape
it “might” be worth a one time shot. He has not turned 32 yet and Big Hurt was coming off surgery and disappointing seasons in Chicago at a later age….and he turned out to be pretty good.
by mrod on Jan 4, 2009 1:58 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Bad comparison
Thomas kept getting injured, but whenever he actually was on the field during those years, he still hit like crazy.
Jones has just plain sucked.
To be honest, I remember at the time thinking that it was a bad signing by the Dodgers. I remember thinking that if Jones and Boras REALLY believed that his 2007 was just an off year, they would sign a 1 year contract, have another .900 OPS in Center season, and then sign a long term high money contract instead of a ‘take all the money I can get now’ contract which seemed to tell me that he thought he was not going to get better.

If I were the A's Id offer more than most teams
Assuming most teams wont offer anything. They speculate that the Dodgers will just let him go if no one will trade, so if Im the A’s I offer to pay a tiny bit of the salary, maybe more if we can get an SS prospect.
Even if it is a small chance that Jones bounces back, and it is, that would be worth a lot.

I wouldn't
He looks awful and by most accounts hasn’t gotten much better in the offseason. If he’s willing to come over for the minimum when he’s made a free agent, give him a shot. Otherwise, pass. He’s not worth a prospect unless they’re taking Crosby off our hands and providing us with some other incentive. But I wouldn’t give a single prospect for the guy.

Yes the only reason to trade for him is that you'd have to recruit him as a FA against fierce competition.
Fierce.

If there's any competition for him
and based on the “I’m picking my team for a one year deal for the minimum because the Dodgers are footing the bill for dumping me” and he doesn’t choose the A’s, I honestly don’t care. Fierce competition for an overweight, under performing, sluggish hitter who scouts say hasn’t made any strides towards fixing the problem this winter? I highly doubt it. If there is, I don’t want the A’s to have any part of it, pre-release or otherwise. Like I said above, I wouldn’t give any value whatsoever for Jones. The only thing I’d offer him is a minimum wage contract and a chance to re-prove himself. Absolutely nothing more.

I have an idea!!!
Bobby Crosby for Andruw Jones!
Both cost the same amount of money for 2009 (about $5 million), both are signed only for 2009. The Dodgers can take Crosby and use him at SS for now and hope for his potential to show up, and the A’s can take Jones, and try to get him to lose weight and play 1st Base for the year. If he fails, well, he fails and the job goes back to Barton. Pennington and Petit can already likely out perform Crosby anyways.

I disagree
The A’s were hoping Brown WOULD “return to form”— namely, his 2005-2006 form, in which years he was an above-average corner OF. Didn’t work, but most $1.5M fliers aren’t going to work.

burrell rays 2yr/16mill
The Rays, filling their need for a power hitter, are close to signing free-agent Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16 million contract, according to major-league sources.
Burrell, 32, will serve as the team’s designated hitter. The team, nearing its payroll limit, could use some combination of Ben Zobrist, Gabe Gross and Fernando Perez in right field.
The Rays had considered a number of free agents, including Milton Bradley and Jason Giambi, to fill either their DH or right-field vacancies.
Bradley is likely to sign with the Cubs for more money than the Rays were willing to pay. Giambi could end up back with the A’s.
