Mark Mulder
According to the Boston Globe, the A's and the Brewers have the most interest in pitcher Mark Mulder. The Red Sox are also "monitoring" the situation.
The A's may have some opening spots in the starting rotation behind Justin Duchscherer and Dana Eveland. Other than those two, that leaves three spots with potentially Gio Gonzalez, Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, Dallas Braden, Josh Outman, and Sean Gallagher filling out the rotation.
So, with that said, what do you guys think? Is Mark Mulder a good fit for the A's and should the A's go ahead and sign him?

NRI material - definite interest if that's the deal
Poll from a few months ago was pretty even on interest for Mulder to return

I love Mark. I hope he is finally able to really pitch again. He has always been such a talent and I would be happy to see him back
Could he be the new Greg Smith?

ha I loved Mulder long before Greg Smith..but no. I’ll just have to watch Greg pitch with his..new..team. Ugh I still hate saying that. But I would be happy to see Mulder come back and have some success. I watched Mulders last highly anticipated come back start only to watch him leave hurt right away..ugh..I cringed for him!

My take on Mulder:
If the A’s can get him for either a minor league deal, split contract or low base Major League contract (less than $1 million) plus a whole bunch of incentives, then yes, I’m all for Mulder coming back. If Mychael Urban is to be believed, then Mark actually wants to come back to Oakland and the chances of him taking an incentive-based deal actually increases.
But if other teams start showing interest and Mark all of a sudden thinks it’s 2003 again and wants a several-million-dollar major league contract, then no…do not sign him.
I'm never gonna do it without the fez on!
Urban?
Right, this is the “journalist/reporter” who penned the following:
“But Beane likely isn’t done, and if he hits one or two of his free-agent targets — lefty Randy Johnson and first baseman Jason Giambi would be nice fits under the circumstances”
This was 6 days AFTER Randy Johnson had already signed with the Giants. I’m not sure anything that Urban writes right now should be considered factual. Granted, he did have some sweet access to Mulder during his time here. Urban did write that “Aces” book about the Big 3.
I’m just down on anything that Urban has to say about the team right now.

That gaffe, though, doesn't change that Mr. Urban
is among the five or so “insiders” whose info is probably most reliable most often.

I think that is more a testament to the few number of "insiders"
than Urban’s reliability.

I'd actually give Urban somewhat of a pass on that
That was posted on 01.01.09, which I suspect (with the holiday interregnum and both holidays falling close to weekends) means it was probably in the editorial hopper somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks prior to being posted. I’d guess Urban wrote and submitted that just before the Giants announced the RJ signing, and he figured his editors would simply pull it.
I'll send you a postcard from Space Mountain. @('.')@
Sadly
It happens all the time. Not a huge Urban fan, but I’d be shocked if it’s not the editor’s fault.

Maybe I’m confusing him with some other injured Cardinal pitcher, but I thought I read about him working with a specialist to get his range of motion back. That doesn’t seem to bode well.
On December 14, espn.com had this to say about Mulder
The agent for free agent Mark Mulder told the Boston Globe that his oft-injured client is ready to contribute immediately.
Gregg Clifton said Mulder, 31, who is 103-60, seems to have gotten over the hump from the shoulder injury that has limited him to six starts the last two seasons and 23 over the last three.
“He’s ready to go for any team right out of the chute,” Clifton told the newspaper. There had been some talk that teams would have to wait until May or June. “Not true,” said Clifton.
Of course, that’s agent talk so who knows if it’s believable.

Mulder was the one where range of motion was discussed
It was in the context of him figuring out a way (with a specialist) to get enough range of motion back to pitch well again, something that was clearly not the case when he tried to come back last season.

Awesome
Im completely for it.
Get Mulder on the cheap for 2 years, get Sheets on the cheap for 2 years, trade one of our stud prospects for an SS option.

Mulder wouldn't command more than 1 year on a minor league deal.
"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."
I wouldn't mind a vesting option for a second year on a split contract.

i dunno how cheap sheets will be
someone’s going to have to set the market at some point, and if lowe gets over $10 mil, so will sheets

Sheets will get more than 10mil
I imagine it will be somewhere between 12-15mil/year. For a two-year deal, I think the A’s would do just fine to pony up something in that range for 1-2 years.

I agree with most of the people here
As long as it takes no significant salary or year commitment then by all means bring him back. I’m thinking a minor league contract or a 1-year mlb deal with 6 figure base salary and incentives.
That said I’m for bringing in almost anybody on a minor league contract.
It's really ridiculous that he's still only 31
I could have sworn he was coming up on 34 or 35.
That being said, he is still in “peak years”. Of course he may not be ready, but if he is what are the chances Oakland is his #1 destination. From everything i can recall he had great memories here and left with the “I had a great time there but I’ve got to move on” speech.
The guy is 3 years removed from a fantastic season, before which he never had any serious injury.
Make him an NRI and let’s hope a healthy Mulder can return to #2 form (although a solid #4 season would be fantastic).
hheellllll yeahhhhh!!! holla!
then maybe i’ll be able to name some of the players again…

All this talk of Mulder and Jones...
Sure I’d take them. IF they come cheaply. Anything more than 1 million (and only that much if they have a cheap team option year for 2010), and no thank you.

Jones would probably come at League Minimum
sort of like the Thomas deal. Sign for Minimum because the Dodgers will be paying the rest after his release.
