From that list, the one with the best chance of making it would be Andrew Bailey as the 7th Man in the pen.

After that, probably one or two of Mazzaro, Simmons, Anderson and Cahill if they impress enough in ST to get the back end Rotation spots while their competition fails to.

i would disagree

i agree it will be a reliever, and i think it’s cameron.

You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' If your talking about making the team to start the year...

I think Kevin Cameron has the best shot. Bailey, Carignan, and Lansford could be in the running to snag a bullpen spot if things break right.

Agree about Cameron

I expect him to snag one of the last ’pen spots and be used like Mike Neu was a couple years back.

I vote for Brett Anderson. The team's one injury to a starter away from open tryouts,

and he can probably beat out Mazzaro and the Gio/Outman loser.

I'm with you on Anderson

If he looks terrific enough in spring training, I imagine the A’s will find a place for him.

For one thing, I don't think he throws enough innings to look as terrific as he'll need to

I think he’d pretty much have to throw 20 scoreless innings while striking out a batter per. I think it’s going to be virtually impossible for him (or Cahill) to make the team right away.

I thought so too, till I saw Geren's quote.

BTW I’m not saying it’s likely, just that it’s the most likely of any of the above guys.

David Forst made a point

in this interview about a pitcher drafted last year by the name of Dan Thomas. They put him in the bullpen and he started pitching in the 96 mph range. Forst mentioned that he should move quickly through the system. So I think he might also be put up on that list, especially since the list doesn’t specify at what point of the 2009 season at player might make the club.

The part about FDLS (or, more appropiately, his wife) having

twins and THEN quadruplets was really interesting. I just read that for the first time…it was awesome.

i’m still wondering where Jeremy Brown ended up and if he might come back.

I think he;s a model for Levi’s or something

If you had a lineup of 9 Jack Custs who hit(Cust career average) .239 AVG, .382 OBP, and .475 SLG, then your team would score 6.12 runs per game-totalling to 991runs a season. The 08 rangers lead the majors in runs score with 901.

Jeremy or.....

What about Andrew Brown? Think he might be a non roster invite since being released? He seemed to show interest in remaining with the club.

by stever4a's on Feb 1, 2009 1:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If Brown was "invited", it would be for morale, not for playing

He can’t play for about a year, and the contract will come after rehab.

A lot of these invites are pro forma

I think there are really two competitions going on here: Schroder, Bailey, Cameron, Carignan and Lansford (and Jeff Gray, I guess, assuming he can take time out for baseball from his busy schedule filming The Scrub Who Wouldn’t Die) for the last spot in the bullpen, and Galarraga and Bowen for backup catcher.

The team needs the loser of Outman/Gonzalez for long relief, so unless one of them really gets hammered or gets hurt, I don’t see the rest of the starters being in play. Donaldson/Carter/Cardenas/Doolittle/Weeks are just there for the experience and the early start of workouts. Carson and Bozied are emergency options at best. There are major battles for playing time in the infield and outfield but none of them involve non-roster players.

I'm hoping for Jerome Williams

I know he hasn’t been good lately, but he was decent once upon a time, so I’m hoping he’ll find it again. Assuming he can pitch tolerably well, one advantage to putting him on the roster is if he ends up with the thankless role of long man and irregular starter, we don’t really care about it messing up his development as much as we would with one of the younger guys.

Also, it would be fun to have the all-Hawaiian battery again.

Does anyone have any info about his health and a possible pitching session?

maybe Simmons

I could see Simmons slipping past Gio and Outman into that 5th slot in the rotation. Given the hitting acquisitions, at the beginning of the season at least, I don’t expect any player on the roster to have a particularly long leash, and that wouldn’t really suit Gio, or most likely Outman as a starter either. With his command, Simmons is less risky than those two. The Coliseum is a very forgiving environment for a pitcher who throws strikes.

Mazzarro same thing, but I’d guess the A’s would be more hesitant to rush him.

by AgitationStation on Feb 1, 2009 6:02 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Simmons is "less risky" in the sense that his control is better than the other guys. He's more risky

in the sense that he has to be pinpoint perfect to be successful. To me that means he has very little margin for error and therefore more risky overall.

Or we trade

the Cubs for Rich Hill/Chad Gaudin…I hear they’re out of options. That probably doesn’t make sense in my garbled morning function mode, but it would add another high upside guy or two.

I heard the A’s brass is calling him the dark horse in surprising everyone in spring training. Anderson and Cahill are better pitchers but will start in AAA and not be rushed.

Chances for non-roster guys became slimmer

with the acquisition of the relief pitcher WUERTZ who was just acquired from the cubs.
He has no 2009 options remaining and must remain on the 25 man roster (not the 40 man roster). Another fine relief pitcher. That gives a pitching roster of 11 decent pitchers, assuming Gio Gonzalez needs more seasoning which is not necessarily a valid assumption. I am looking only at the 40 man roster.

rotation:
Duke
Gallagher
Evenland
Braden
Gonzalez/Outman

pen:
Wuertz
Casilla
Springer
Ziegler
Devine
blevins
loser of the Outman/Gonzalez battle (unless they decide to go with an 11 man staff in which case Outman or Gonzalez would probably end up in Sac’s rotation meaning Sac could have a rotation of Gonzalez or Outman, Cahill, Anderson, Mazzaro, and Simmons in the relatively early going – killer AAA rotation!)
