Andrew Brown released to make room for Springer?
According to Slusser, that's what is happening.
Andrew Brown got a double dose of bad news on Wednesday. Dr. James Andrews confirmed that Brown needs surgery on his right shoulder, with the procedure scheduled for this morning. Then the A's let the reliever go.
Brown said he was told the team needs to clear a 40-man roster spot for 16-year veteran reliever Russ Springer. Springer's one-year contract is not yet official, pending a physical, which is expected to take place today. Assistant general manager David Forst declined comment when reached Wednesday.
The possibility of Brown coming back on a minor league contract was left open though.
Having a setback of a full year after missing a significant portion of last season probably wasn't the best outcome for Brown. I'd like to see him come back after he gets healthy, but I wouldn't be surprised if he latched on elsewhere.

Are teams allowed to outright release a player who got hurt like that?

Kind of wierd
I thought they’d just move him to the 50 Day DL.

60 day dl = pay MLB salary
Release and re-sign to MiLB deal is cheaper.
The question is whether there’s a compelling reason to avoid the pure financial win.

That would be a reason to do what they did
The downside would be another team signs him (and he gets better).

if he'd opted to have surgery during the season
they could have stashed him on the 60 day DL. but if its in the offseason, there is no DL. hence, he was given his release.

this sucks
put him on the 60 day dl. It really doesn’t seem fair and would not be the kind of reputation you would want to promote, especially when Oakland has a lot of injuries and a suspect medical staff.

What is wrong with the A's medical staff. Provide a link. It is not fair to blame the injuries on the medical staff.

they have misdiagnosed a lot of injuries
bobby crosby’s broken back comes to mind. Also i seem to remember huston street getting diagnosed by some chiropracter in canada on the advice of harden to treat his injury rather than going to the team doctor.

Fair? Who's the f***ing nihilist here?
It’s not fair to blame the A’s medical staff for injuries. It is fair to blame them for misdiagnosing injuries, pushing players back to quickly, and/or poor treatment:

This may just be Croz and Harden talking… or it may be an issue.

I totally agree (but no link)
The incidents with Crosby and Harden were an emphasis on thoughts I had for a while. It was hard to understand how a team of relative youth was ending up constantly on DL and at record pace. Even the injury to the star, long-term contract player (Chavez) seems to have been relatively mismanaged in my humble opinion.
by WhiteElephant on Jan 29, 2009 11:16 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Chavez's case was more of a snowball combined with stubbornness
Chavez had the injury since HS, but never bothered fixing it. So, it got worse and worse and worse. Then he injured something else lifting weights. Then the combination of those two injuries injured his other arm, then his other shoulder, then his back.
And finally he caved in and got treatment.

It sure is unethical
Most (all?) employers aren’t allowed to fire an employee who is recovering from getting injured on the job.
by thejd44 on Jan 29, 2009 10:56 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe not, but most employers don't pay their employees for getting injured on the job either
Generally speaking, once you exhaust your sick time, you’re off the payroll. That doesn’t include worker’s comp, but I think Brown is covered under that. The MLBPA may also have their own disability pension benefits, although those are (like the rest of the CBA) liable to be set up so as to heavily favor players who’ve had a long MLB career.

Plus, it sounds like we are hoping to sign him to a MiLB contract anyway.

had the A's even
purchased his contract yet for the 2009 season? I mean, it’s not like he had a guaranteed major league deal, right? He was still accruing service time as far as I know. Signing him back to minor league deal won’t be a terrible blow to him…
by oakballnack on Jan 30, 2009 6:46 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
My guess is that he'll still be covered under the MLB insurance and medical
since he incurred the injury when he was on the team.

So the A's don't have to pay for his shoulder surgery anymore?
How does MLB medical insurance work? Once released, are all the surgical costs and rehab costs on Brown? Or is it still covered somehow? Would worker’s comp cover it?
I know the world thinks all these players are rich, but I tend to think they are slave labor until they qualify for arbitration.

sounds like Brown just followed advice
(not sure from who) before seeing Dr. Andrews:
Brown, 27, had shoulder problems after a quick return from an appendectomy last summer, and he was advised to rehab the injury with rest followed by therapy. He followed that plan, and he no longer has pain in the shoulder, but his velocity has dropped from the high 90s to the mid-80s. Increased strength training did not resolve the problem, and an MRI exam showed a labrum tear with the possibility of rotator cuff damage.

Brown is not signed for this season...
even though he is/was A’s property, he did not have a contract for the 2009 season. It makes perfect business sense to not give a plyer a contract if he is not going to pitch for you. Ethically, I would hope the A’s sign him to a minor league contract (at half the cost) and help him rehab.

I'm pretty sure Brown won't be paying for his surgery and rehab out of pocket
So, in that sense, there’s nothing ethically wrong with this. You just don’t see someone released instead of being placed on the DL too often.

by mikev on Jan 29, 2009 11:04 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, he’s injured an needs surgery, so NOW the a’s are supposed to sign him to a contract, so they can DL him and pay him?

It doesn't sound like they're doing that
Andrews told Brown he will miss about a year, and the A’s left open the possibility of a minor-league deal when Brown has finished rehab, Brown said.

another 40 yr old
The A’s might not be done upgrading their bullpen after completing their one-year deal with free-agent right-hander Russ Springer, who will receive more than $3 million plus incentives, according to a rival executive. The A’s also are interested in free-agent lefty Brian Shouse, another source said, and they were one of three teams to attend a recent workout by lefty Andrew Sisco, who is 10 months removed from Tommy John surgery. The Rockies and Giants also watched Sisco throw. …
The Mariners view Abreu as an ideal fit, major-league sources say, but it is unclear whether they can afford him. The Giants also have shown interest, knowing Abreu would come cheaper than Manny Ramirez. But the A’s, another possible suitor, are more likely to pursue free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera. The Nationals, meanwhile, are more likely to want Adam Dunn.

Another missed Injury?
I’m just wondering if the training staff knew about this injury all along and said nothing, or if once again they missed a big one.
