Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

2009 Oakland Athletics

Although the A's have made the two good acquisitions of Matt Holiday and Jason Giambi, we still need more punch. There are over 100 players still out there in the market and A's should act now. I know there is a great group of guys in Sacramento and the other affiliates but we should still try to contend. Face it, reasons for the lack of fans is because of a lack of name players and the will to win. A rebuilding team is not a good one for fans. Billy Beane and David Forst need the acquisition of an outfielder, shortstop, adn starting pitcher. The A's should acquire Garret Anderson, Orlando Cabrera, and Ben Sheets. Each one of these guys provides the type of force that the A's need. I know that ben sheets is a long shot but look, no one has really made a solid offer at him.

The Starting Linup should Be:                                    The Starting Rotation Should Be:

1.Ryan Sweeney, CF                                                              1. Ben Sheets

2.Mark Ellis, 2B                                                                        2. Justin Duchscherer

3.Jack Cust, DH                                                                       3. Dana Eveland

4.Matt Holiday, RF                                                                    4. Gio Gonzalez

5.Garret Anderson, LF                                                             5. Sean Gallagher

6.Orlando Cabrera, SS

7.Eric Chavez, 3B

8.Kurt Suzuki, C

9. Jason Giambi, 1B

That Particular Lineup

I’d go with the following:

1.) CF — R. Sweeney
2.) DH — J. Cust
3.) RF — M. Holliday
4.) 1B — J. Giambi
5.) 3B — E. Chavez
6.) C — K. Suzuki
7.) LF — G. Anderson
8.) SS — O. Cabrera
9.) 2B — M. Ellis

But as long as we're fantasizing,

This should be the A’s lineup:

1. CF Rickey Henderson
2. 2B Joe Morgan
3. DH Babe Ruth
4. LF Willie Mays
5. 1B Lou Gehrig
6. SS Alex Rodriguez
7. RF Joe DiMaggio
8. 3B Mike Schmidt
9. C Johnny Bench

And our rotation should be Cy Young, Tom Seaver, Walter Johnson, Satchel Paige and Duchscherer. Just cuz.

by Nate on Jan 23, 2009 10:46 PM PST reply actions

Oh come on,

Hank Aaron was better than Joltin’ Joe. Plus, why the hell would you put Mays in left and Rickey in center? Mays was a defensive wizard, and Rickey was not.

And neither was better than Ted Williams ...

or Mickey Mantle or Ty Cobb …

1. LF Ty Cobb
2. DH Ted Williams
3. RF Babe Ruth
4. 1b Lou Gehrig
5. CF Willie Mays
6. SS Alex Rodriguez
7. 3b Mike Schmidt
8. C Johnny Bench
9. 2b Joe Morgan

Four lefties in a row at the top of the order plus Morgan...then four righties. You're vulnerable to

Jesse Orosco and Kent Tekulve.

Why would we get Anderson?

How much better is he really going to be than Buck or Cunningham? Plus, if he is better than those two, this would be the last year that he is, so it would be short-sighted to play him over them, as they would lose development time.

we have better in house outfielders than garret anderson.

buck, cunningham, davis. id rather see robnett or herrera get a shot than anderson. i know he seems like hank aaron when he plays the a’s, but his skills have diminished a lot in the past 2-3 years.

In the spirit of charity and goodwill toward men,

I will endeavor to explain, without condescension, why this is a very very very bad idea.

1. Garret Anderson: At this stage of his career, Garret Anderson is a pretty poor baseball player. Last year, he posted an OBP of .325— well below league average. His power is mediocre— he hasn’t managed 20 HR since 2003. And he’s playing left field, an offense-first position and— the crowning indignity— is bad at defense too. He’s almost worthless as a player at this point and certainly not worth spending money on, or giving a starting job to.

1a. Travis Buck: Chopped liver? You won’t find a reputable projection system that thinks he’s going to be worse next season than Garret Anderson.

2. Ben Sheets: While I would love to fantasize about Sheets wearing green and gold, the fact of the matter is that he is not within the team budget. Personally, I’d like to see the A’s operate the team at a loss for a season or two so that they can bid for a World Series with Matt Holliday. But dreaming about that is a fool’s errand.

3. Orlando Cabrera: You’ve already spent all the money under Lew Wolff’s seat cushions… and you want ANOTHER free agent? I just don’t know what to say here.

4. The lineup: You have Orlando Cabrera hitting in front of Jason Giambi. Orlando Cabrera’s career high— career high!— OBP is 61 points worse than Giambi’s career average. It’s only 5 points better than Giambi’s career LOW. Anderson’s career mark is almost as bad as Cabrera’s.

Before you suggest something like this in the future, you need to do three things:

1. Read up on how to evaluate hitters’ capabilities more accurately,
2. Develop a sense of how to construct a lineup to maximize the number of baserunners, meaning not putting worse hitters in front of better ones, and
3. Get a handle on payroll reality. Players are coming cheap this offseason, but the reason they are doing so is that the teams are all cutting back. The A’s are not any different in that respect— what we thought the payroll would be four months ago is not what we think it’ll be at this point.

But...but...but...

Getting Anderson…would hurt…the Angels!

Or something.

I honestly don’t know how anyone could even THINK of batting Jason Giambi 9th, ESPECIALLY in the A’s lineup. I wouldn’t bat Cabrera ahead of Chavez, either.

I’d really love to see some of the logic in a couple of those ideas.

Face it, reasons for the lack of fans is because of a lack of name players and the will to win.

See, I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how a good baseball team runs. A team does not acquire players purely because they happen to be big names. They only acquire players who are good, something Garret Anderson is not. Getting big names does not win you fans. Winning with players who become big names win you fans.
