New "proof" of McGwire 'roid use?
I guess somebody has to start a fanpost about this. It's going to come up eventually.
So, Jay McGwire... concerned brother? Sleazy opportunist? Something else? Is he even telling the truth?
Personally, I've never heard of the guy until today. I was aware of Dan, but not this guy.
Anyway, there's not much for me to say on the subject at the moment, but this should make for interesting conversation if nothing else. Here ya go...

The book, "The McGwire Family Secret: The Truth about Steroids, a Slugger and Ultimate Redemption," is reportedly being sent by Jay McGwire to several publishing houses in New York. Deadspin.com said that it has been turned down by "many" publishers.

Anyway, it completely contradicts Jose Canseco.

But what doesnt contradict Jose Canseco

The timing is curious...
As was mentioned below, he did hit 49 HRs his rookie year… then tailed off noticeably. He had a couple very good years through 1992, but not consistently.
Then, 1993 and 1994 he was pretty much broke down more often than not.
Then, he allegedly started taking the ’roids in 1994, according to this acocunt. IF this is true… and the key word is if… then it is curious that in 1995 and beyond he magically started staying healthy and hitting HRs consistently for the next six seasons like he had never done before.
Coincidence? The epitome of circumstantial evidence. LOL!

Timing of the book is curious too
McGwires “transformation” if you will began after the 91’ season when he hit .201 with just over 20 HR’s in a full season. Rob Deer-esque. For 92’ he was bigger and started the goatee, longer hair and also hitting HR’s at an slightly faster rate than he already was. Assuming he was using illegal stuff, surely he was using something either way, its pretty obvious to me it started before 92’. When he showed up to Spring Training it was somewhat of a story. He didn’t really transform after that off-season. If ‘roids helped McGwires foot issues I’d be a little surprised, I know they can help heal things and I don’t claim to be an expert on all the little things they can or cannot do.
I personally don’t give his brother much credibility, it might be true but whenever someone is trying to sell a book in this way it makes me pretty skeptical.

I just can't get all worked up over the book deal aspect.
He may make some money… so what? We defend most people (especially our favorite athletes) when they maneuver themselves to get as much as they can. I find it disingenuous to suggest that making money is only bad when it’s done at the expense of someone we like. It’s either a free market and all is fair and good, or it’s not.
That being said, if his sole motivation were to “help” Mark and he felt the best way to do that were to force Mark’s hand, the the book deal wouldn’t be sought… he’d just come out publicly and give interviews, etc. I don’t mind the book deal, but I don’t like being basically lied to when they claim the money isn’t important to them, either.

what makes me mad is
Roids did not make Big Mac. He came into the league a tall skinny stick bombing 49 HRs….He (other then Bonds, Rafe, and so on) should not take the fall for everyone is baseball who used roids during the time – which was 90% of them.

90%, eh?

So we should believe this guy who hasn't spoken to Mark in years?
Like he doesn’t have an axe to grind of some sort.
McGwire belongs in the Hall so put him there

So?
They haven’t spoken to him in years. Were they speaking at the time this was allegedly done? Apparently, yes. And yes, he may have an axe to grind.
Neither of those possibilities necessarily makes the accusations untrue.

Why can't people just admit mistakes
If he had done that most folks would find a place in their hearts to forgive. Now it will remain an open subject. He did it. He was not alone.

I could care less whether he did roids
the same I could care less whether Bonds and everyone else did.
I do think he made an idiot of himself before the nation with his “I’m not here to talk about the past………………….” etc etc.
If he had admitted his mistakes or his error in making a fool of himself then he should be forgiven and maybe eventually elected to the HOF
Now Clemens, he’s a different story. He lied his arse off (Hopefully to be proven beyond a shadlow of a doubt) , made himself look like the total **** that he is and should never be allowed in the HOF ever (IMO)
Bonds should be as long as he is not convicted when and if his trial goes forward. He was a HOF before he did stuff and the fact that there are and will be many offenders in the HOF, should not exclude him.
Just my 4 cents

Agree about the testimony...
…that was probably his biggest blunder of all. Even more than doing the ’roids to begin with. If he did do them, of course.
Pettite apologized. and has been largely forgiven. Giambi has apologized, albeit in a somewhat comical way that has made him the butt of jokes, but we still knew what he meant and have pretty much forgiven him anyway.
Clemens is toast. Palmiero is toast.
Bonds’ situation still needs to be played out.
I don’t know if it’s literally too late for McGwire, but I do feel that the more time that goes by the harder it will be for him to successfully put it past him. Pete Rose is a good example of this, I think.

This "apologist" sez:
Watch the video link by Gammons on the article above…it sums up how I feel about it 100%. Among my opinions is that Jay McGwire isn’t very credible just like Canseco isn’t, something I felt since Canseco’s book came out but alot of people wanted to believe him anyway.
I agree McGwire most likely used, one issue I have is holding things against players there is no concrete proof of. IMO innocent until proven guilty has some meaning and should be considered here. I wish and hope he will come out and clear the air at some point, most people will forgive or get over it eventually if he does that.
I’m glad all of this has helped put in place testing so the “steriod era” is surely behind us but don’t feel this makes me an apologist, my view or reaction that this is overblown by some in the media since day one and sketchy people like Canseco and Jay McGwire want to sell a book put fuel on the fire. I’m glad people stopped paying attention to Canseco by the time his 2nd book came out.
The much higher standard that baseball players are/were held to on the steriod issue vs football or other sports is annoying to me. I understand records and numbers mean more in this sport but the topic and issue has been beaten to death. Shawn Merriman was found to use steriods but wheres the outcry? (I realize he was suspended but thats it) Oh thats right, its football, its not that big of a deal. How much of the NFL used ‘roids in the 70’s and even 80’s? You bet alot of players did, surely some Hall of Famers too.
Again, I hope at some point Mac comes clean as well as other players, you have to think part of them wants to at least.
