Harden out of WBC with shoulder injury
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/worldclassic2009/news/story?id=3849357
For the second straight time, injuries will keep Rich Harden from pitching for Canada in the World Baseball Classic.
The Chicago Cubs right-hander, who was listed on Canada's provisional 45-man roster, pulled himself out of consideration as he recovers from a shoulder injury.
"I missed the last [2006] WBC too, because i was coming off surgery, and that just killed me to be in the stands watching ... and this time it will be just as difficult to watch," Harden said, according to the Calgary Herald.
Harden said he has just started a throwing program and March is too soon for him to pitch in games.
The 27-year-old pitcher, who has battled injuries throughout his six-season career, was 10-2 last season in 25 starts for the Oakland Athletics and Cubs with a sparkling 2.07 ERA.

Create A H.L for him.
M.L.B needs to create a H.L( Healthy List) just for Harden. When he plays you put him on it.

I had no problem with trading Harden
I just did not like having to give up Gaudin in addition to Harden, based on the absolutely fantastic season he was/did have. Without question Gaudin was still a valuable piece and considering all the question marks we have in our starting rotation it would be nice to still have him around as a safety valve in case the young guns misfire.
Even so
I still take no pleasure in Harden being injured again. It is like a beautiful race horse than cannot get on the track.
Gaudin
was looking up Gaudin’s stats with the Cubs last year….6.25 ERA over three months….oh my….is this guy hurt. Might not have been a bad idea to send him off
Joke will be on us
When he’s healthy in the regular season.

haha.
Canada is even further screwed because Jeff Francis is likely to skip as well.
I really wish guys would take greater pride in playing for the countries – and maybe a little less in their paycheques.

Really?
So they can play in a made-up event that’s scheduled at the wrong time of year, and intended simply to make money for other people?

well...
It’s really the only best on best international competition has. I know it’s rather “made-up” and its profits are rather misplaced – it’d be nicer if the IBF had a little more to do with it, but it’s about playing for your country in the only event you really have a chance to.
It’s shouldn’t be about $$$.

You have to remember WHY the WBC was created in the first place, and why its scheduled when it is.
The WBC was created because Baseball is going to be taken out of the Olympics. (Unfortunately, for whatever reason, they are also taking out Softball, which makes no sense to me).
To replace this, MLB decide to create the World Baseball Classic in order to get MLB players into it and not just minor leaguers like the Olympics had been. Since they couldn’t do it in the middle of year, and since they couldn’t do it at the end of the year, the only time left was Spring Training.
Why couldn’t they do it at the end of the year? Several reasons:
- The Weather
- Its right after a very long MLB season, all the players are tired and recovering from injuries
- Few players would play in it for fear of hurting their Free Agent chances
- It would hurt any thought of a potential True WORLD series which might be one day organized at the end of the year involving the winner of the MLB World Series and the winner of playoffs between the leagues in Japan and Korea. Such a series would be different from the WBC because it would not be Nation based as much as Team Based, as MLB teams might have Japanese or Korean players (along with players from Latin America), and the Asian team might have foreign players as well.
Doctor Baron Van Evil Satan
hope that wasn't at me
because I know why it was created. It still doesn’t change my opinion on the matter.

"WHY" is to make money.
1 — The Olympics don’t “need” replacing. Nor does baseball “need” a World Cup. Baseball is just not a global sport, it already has a world championship for everybody but Cubans who can’t swim, and several of the current teams are utter make-weights. To make the Italian team, apparently your name simply needs to end in a vowel or two (e.g. Chris Denorfia, of the Connecticut Denorfias). The Netherlands — that hotbed of diamond frenzy, consists of Sidney Ponson and eight guys named Dieter. And why isn’t South Africa, where at least it’s summer, hosting any games on one of their several venues — oh, they’re busy playing cricket and rugby on them?
2 — If baseball really did “need” another, country-based world championships, they could shorten the season — but wait, that would cost money.
3 — the weather? First round games are played in warm weather cities or big cities with domes. Later rounds are played in FL and CA, where college bowl games are played because of good weather. The weather’s always pretty good in Havana, Santo Domingo and Caracas — why no games there? Oh yeah — not as much money to be made there.
4 — There aren’t that many free agents/year. Who is playing this year that was a free agent this season? Not Sabathia or Teixeira (both of whom should play for Italy, of course) nor Penny or Furcal.
5 — I might tune into a team-based tournament, but not one that interferes with ST, that may well cause more injuries from under-conditioning than a late-year tournament would cause by fatigue, and that really has no relevance or purpose beyond spectacle. And the making of money.
BTW — who does profit? And why isn’t it a good cause?

Agree that the WBC has some problems
But I completely disagree that it has “no relevance or purpose,” beyond making money. Are national pride and international competition really that tough to grasp? Sure, it may not create the fervor that the World Cup for soccer does, but plenty of folks who don’t give a s**t about the major leagues tuned in to see the Mexican, Korean, Cuban, Venezuelan, etc. teams compete.
The real tragedy regarding its scheduling is that so many of the best players opt out to save themselves for the MLB regular season. And I’ll grant that watered-down talent does decrease its relevance.
And the Italian, Dutch and South African teams don’t help either
Yes. For me it IS a tough "sell."
But then, I got a bigger kick out of watching Usain Bolt than Michael Phelps, so maybe it’s “just” me.
Why is there no Jamaican team, BTW — are they all out bobsledding?

Sadly, I don't think we will ever see a truly healthy Rich Harden, folks.
But, can you imagine what this guy could have accomplished already if he had been healthy? I mean, just think about it.
Of course, Cubbies fans already feel our pain watching Mark Prior and Kerry Wood spend a significant amount of time on the DL in their careers.
"God made Majnun love Layla so much that just her dog would cause confusion in him."

I can't say that Cubs fans aren't deserving of their pain.
Every year for the past 10 years they’ve claimed they have the “team to beat” in the NL Central when it has largely been dominated by the Cardinals and Astros.
