The A's will be in Chicago in the first week of June for the 2009 season facing the Chicago White Sox in a four game series (mon-tue-wed-thur).
I know that I am going to go to at least one of these games. But hey, its boring going alone-we need a group of us A's fans cheering our guys on.
So for all you A's fans stranded in Chicago, how would you feel about a Mid West AN Get-together at the Cell to root for A's over the "Good Guys".
If you are interested, announce yourself.
Edit: Does anyone know a good Chicago Sports Bar to watch A's games at? Or does AN Chicago want to hijack a Bar and make it the West Coast Sports Home for NRAFs?

I am thinking of starting a facebook group for this trip soon, so hopefully that will help planning. Also, we have to decide how to get the tickets and what day we want to do it on. It looks to me like the best idea would be to buy tickets for Monday, June 1st, as those tickets are discounted a lot.
Does anyone want to volunteer to buy the tickets and distribute them?

I'll be going to at least one of them
Glad you started this, Zonis, because I’ve been meaning to do a similar thing. On another note, if you’re gonna be in the area and ever want to have A’s-related gatherings, I’m in.
Btw, I can’t recall what you said your major was, but I found a member of the DePaul faculty who grew up an A’s fan (even though, like me, he’s a South Sider).

If we get a good group of people interested, we can try for a group ticket package.

I went to all 6 games at the cell last year....
and I plan to attend all the games this year… drop me an email. Omizzle821@yahoo.com
I'm absolutley heading out to at least one of the games.
Maybe more, we’ll see as it comes together. Let’s try to make this happen.

Absolutely -- wear your gear and sit together so the cameras can find you.
And you’ll outnumber those marauding father-son teams.

For what it's worth, the Ligue's are mocked by Sox fans, too.

Didn't they go and get wasted at the Cubs game first anyway?
Or was that a lie I’ve bought into?

Hmm, I'm not even sure.
After living here for almost 25 years, I’m content to say that most Chicago sports fans are total dopes, or, as a local radio show calls them, “meatballs.” These are the idiots who think the Superfans are a tribute. There’s plenty of them. It’s sickening, and it’s almost enough to make me hate the couple Chicago sports teams I actually still like.
In terms of fan intelligence, Bulls fans – the diehard fans – are by far the best and smartest. Every other fan base may as well be a collection Bill Swerskis.

I gathered that the author, James McManus, was both one of the smartest and one of the most passionate Chicago sports fans.

Of course there are smart fans of every team
And I’m sure every fan base has their share of idiots. After all, there’s no intelligence test required to root for a team (and more importantly, most people don’t have the time to learn as much as possible about the sport in question).
But when you have an entire fan base (Bears fans), and by entire I mean a good 95%, that thinks Kyle Orton is good at football, we’ve got a problem. Sox and Cubs fans have their own particular stupidities, and Blackhawks fans are just now coming back but after the game I went to a week ago (where idiots kept yelling “SHOOT THE PUCK” as if the Hawks were not shooting on purpose, when the real problem was every pass was intercepted or mishandled) I have little faith there. People here sure are passionate, but almost impossible to talk to about sports.

Cubs fans suck
They are about the equal of Red Sox fans, IMO. This doesn’t mean 100%, one of my good friends is a true Cubs fan and my best friend from childhood was….but the majority I encounter are frat boy d-bags.

Those aren't the real fans.
Real Cubs fans are just like any other fan. The ones that are annoying on the ones who are there for the show, the ones who don’t really care if the team wins. The Cubs have a higher percentage of this fan than, I think, any other group of fans out there.
by thejd44 on Jan 29, 2009 11:40 PM PST up reply actions
No, NYY, BOS and ANA have much higher %'s, especially ANA
The Cubs have their fare share, but I haven’t actually run into any A-Hole Cub fans yet.

Cubs fans are in the same discussion, IMO
Sure, real fans for any team are fine even if I don’t like that team. There are more weiner Cub fans than any amount I’ve seen and it rivals the Red Sox on the annoying meter, if there was one. My location has something to do with this but Bears, Bulls and White Sox fans are nothing like Cubs fans from what I generally encounter. Well, Bears fans are close…if you ever attend a Cubs game at Miller Park in Milwaukee you’ll never find a more annoying group, again, in general.
While this is a Chicago based thread so most folks are in the area, I think in general the board doesn’t understand how Cubs fans can be. I think Yankees fans are better than either the Cubs or BoSox. I haven’t had the pleasure of running into any Angels or Giants fans around here but I can picture them being of a similar mold as the Cubs/Red Sox/Yankees.
Gas to Chicago- $23.87 A's/White Sox Tix- $28 Watching the A's whipping the Sox in July 05'- Priceless
The Cubs fans who go to Milwaukee are usually real fans though
I’m talking the people who go to Wrigley because it’s an attraction, but people who couldn’t tell you if the Cubs won (but they knew if Sammy homered back when he was on the team), the dopes on the tour busses from Iowa, and of course the d-bag fratboys who turned it into the world’s largest beer garden (and anybody who says that and is proud of it).
by thejd44 on Jan 30, 2009 4:16 PM PST up reply actions
Ehh
Some fans who go to Milwaukee are real of course but a large portion aren’t. I’m all for some trash talk between fans but Cubs fans are pretty bad and alot of the d-bag fratboy group comes to Milwaukee for the games, heck alot of them live around here even so they don’t have to go far. Cubs have a large regional following in the midwest, not sure if its as national as some other teams.

As a Cubs season ticket holder...
I would say alot of the people I see out here at the Wrigley are mostly tourists and you can totally tell. The regulars will wear a cubs jersey or a cubs hat… Tourists here usually are all decked out in Cubs stuff. I have gone with my friends (mostly Cubs fans) to see Cubs/ Brewers games and usually Miller Park fills up with more Cubs fans than Brewers fans… I don’t see it the same type of rivalry as the Cardinals and the Cubs have.
Also,
To the guy who said that its the worlds largest beer garden its true and its not because of the ‘frat boys’ its because Wrigleyville is the worlds largest beer garden… there are a ton of huge bars next to Wrigley and I will be the first to admit (though I am not a cubs fan) I will go to get wasted and hit up the bars there after… it does get pricey but some of the bars have home game specials after and before the games.
I think you hit the nail on the head

I went last year, and recieved only a bit of heckling (helped that we won the game).
And if I remember correctly, ran into 2 AN’ers.
Doctor Baron Van Evil Satan
I've never had a problem at the cell
The A’s aren’t a team that usually inspires much passion in the opposition fan base. In fact, the only bad road game experience I’ve had was at Candlestick (although admittedly I’ve only seen road games in SF, CHW, CHC, Ana, and Bos).
I don’t consider heckling a problem, though – that’s part of the fun.
I'm planning on being there
for at least one game, probably the 3rd or the 4th. We’re from Wisconsin, and our anniversary is 6/5 so we’re going to make a long weekend out of it.
LOL at myself
It’s been a long time since I posted so I didn’t remember what my sig was. I guess I didn’t need to mention where I was from. LOL I’m a nerd.
Where in WI?
Curious how many AN’ers live around where I am….I’m basically in Milwaukee, just outside of it.

Chicago's Home Dugout
is on the 3rd Base Line, so we’ll have to decide if we want to sit on the 1st Base side or the 3rd Base side.
If we sit on the 3rd Base Side, we have a clearer view of plays at home, and we can see the A’s in the dugout. But, we’d be on the White Sox Side, so to speak.

Personally, I prefer the outfield seats in right field, right above the visitor's bullpen
Plus, this would be a good spot to sit to show support for some of the bullpen guys (I can’t be the only one who got the Ziggy shirt!)
As for a bar, I don’t know of one offhand but I’ll look into it. And you can contact me at my AN handle @yahoo.com.

Count me in for atleast one Chicago game
First time posting since the changeover….I guess I’m slow to adapt. I live in Bloomington, IN and will plan on making the trip up to Chicago this year. I doubt that there is any other Bton A’s, but if any of you are out there then look me up. I’d like to make some Midwest A’s trips this year and I’m looking for a road trip buddy. I also have a good A’s bar here in Bton.
I Jus did my school schedule for my next quarter… Im not goin to be able to attend any of the games… this blows… I totally forgot about this.

Count me in as a maybe
I’m not too far from Chicago, basically in Milwaukee, 1.5 hour drive. Not really a non-resident as I’ve been here all my life but it would be fun to hang with A’s fans as any game I’ve ever been to besides our family vacation to CA in 93’ (and saw the A’s play two games with my dad) I’ve been in the vast minority cheering on the green and gold. Went to Chicago in 05’ and last year for a few games, saw Harden’s last game as an Athletic. Weekdays will be tough though, I usually only make the weekend series games and need to make it down to Kane County to see a game or two as well.

on where to sit
I’d vote for either the right field (above the ‘pen) or as close to the visitors dugout as possible. I usually sit there, and sometimes when I’m lucky, get what I call the TV spot – with the A’s heavy lefty lineup, my seats (from a season ticket holder) usually get me sitting right there and on the tube for lefty’s. it’s really a great seat, and I’ll gladly pay the extra dough if that’s what everyone decides….
we should also plan a follow-up to see a Kane County Cougars game as well.
"He's pretty nasty," Gardenhire said. "The last pitch to Harris, we went and watched it, it's on the black. It cut the outside corner of the plate, the tip of it, and that's pretty nasty."

Bleachers are fun
Relatively cheap, though ChiSox games don’t seem to be cheap especially on weekends. Compared to Brewer tickets anyways. Behind the visitors dugout would be sweet though, might be worth the extra money if I can make it. Just wish it was on a weekend.
A trip to Kane County would be the cats meow, or bees knees if you prefer.

Better yet...
Come to Appleton when Kane County is in town vs. the Timber Rattlers! :) (assuming it’s closer)
Wisconsin's #1 A's fan!
Good point
Appleton is about the same for me, I’m right outside Milwaukee so its still about 1.5 hours in each direction. I sadly admit I haven’t been to a Timber Rattlers game but plan to, should be more interesting now that its a Brewers affiliate, the A’s are my team but the Brewers do fall #2.
Hopefully I can do Appleton and Kane County both this year.
