I take this as the A's will add one or the other.
The latest from Ken Rosenthal...
- The A's probably cannot afford both Nick Johnson and Orlando Cabrera, so they'll wait to see what happens with Cabrera before pursuing the trade with Washington.
Sounds like the A's priority number 1 is Cabrera but if the BB express cannot acquire him at the price he wants he’ll go after Nick Johnson.
Johnson would be a nice add, but for D. Barton? Everything I have heard and read from inside the organization is everyone thinks he will turn out to be a stud, even after his disappointing rookie season.

Crosby as super utility
Interesting that the article mentions Crosby as a super utility guy.
I am sure that any young and relatively competent defensive SS could play several other positions. That just might be what ends up happening with Crosby.

Crosby won't be utility
With Crosby making as much as he is ($4.5 mil I believe), there’s no way the A’s keep him around on the payroll if they acquire Cabrera. That’s an awful pricy Marco Scutaro lol.
Wade Hines
Well
unless another team that the A’s trade Crosby to is willing to take up all of his salary, the A’s will be on the hook for that salary whether Crosby is playing in Japan or sitting on the BART.

well...
considering they couldn’t give him away with his contract, I think it is safe to say they would have to keep him on the payroll. And he’s at $5.25 mil…

he is a sunk cost
and thus I don’t think that his salary is an issue in that sense.
It is an issue in that it makes him hard to get rid of.

I think the follow up question would be
Are we happy about Cabrera and the new super utility position If it comes to fruition?

The A's payroll currently sits at about $49.5 million
I’m estimating Duke earning $4 million in 2009, which is a slight bump over the mid-point between the two sides’ arbitration figures. Adding Nick Johnson would bump the payroll to $55 million and I’m still not convinced that Cabrera can be had for 1 year/$5.5 million.
Now, Rosenthal says adding either one would push the A’s to their payroll limit but I have a hunch Beane would leave himself a little surplus cash in case he needed to make a move mid-season. There’s no way Beane would spend the last of his money on another 1B/DH type, especially one with the injury history of Nick Johnson. So I’m guessing the A’s have a payroll ceiling around $59 million, with another $6 million set aside for the draft and international market. That’s approximately $20 million less than they spent in 2007 ($84-ish million) which is the highest amount we thought the A’s could spend this year.
The monster at the end of this blog.
totally agree
I couldn’t see any value in picking up Johnson, unless the Nat’s pick up the tab.
It's just more exciting with Billy Beane running the team.
if they could dump crosby somehow
and then use some of the savings to add an additional player but that is an issue
johnson they’d have to give up players and take on his 5mill
cabrera lose 2nd rd pick, give him decent money, then have to dump crosby ( who wants him? only 2 places maybe jays but they are content with scutaro or pads but they also have money issues.
if A’s can barely afford johnson/cabrera that means the expected additional 10-15mill payroll isnt there…so forget dunn, abreu, sheets etc
One thought is
If he does really go after Nick Johnson, then crosby has to be in the deal. I know Wash has guzman and co, but I doubt Beane trades for 5.5 million in nick johnson while still have crosby on the roster. I am leaning towards us not picking up johnson in a trade….it really doesn’t make sense for a one year deal since he is on a walk year
that would seem logical
but you rarely see bad contracts trade for one another in baseball.
bowden is salivating at the chance for some of the A"s pitching for a guy who’s barely played in 2 yrs. that they even asked for barton is ridiculous plus wanting A’s to take on johnson’s salary. i wouldnt give up more than a depth guy like cassilla, patterson, murton, denorfia, etc

dude, Crosby had that one 6 week stretch in 2005 when he was AWESOME!
Unfortunately, that’s more than Nick Johnson has played the last 2 years.
its also more than Crosby had played prior to last year
and Crosby is MORE valuable when he is on the DL.

Neither of the above.
I’ll be pretty frustrated if Beane follows up his Holliday trade by acquiring two iffy 1B/DH guys and nothing to help fill the actual holes this team has. Seriously, WT fuggin F?

The only thing that makes sense to me
is the one thing it sounds like BB isn’t pursuing – - – a veteran SP.
Crosby sucks, but I HIGHLY doubt he"s going to suck as much as last year. And adding an injury-plagued Johnson with Giambi and Barton? I don’t get it.
Our starters are so green it’s not even funny. Our most experienced SP is a (re-) converted bullpen guy starting his 3rd year as a starter.

I have to be honest, the idea of O-Cab has really grown on me
C’mon, he is a clear upgrade and if Beane gets him at a Beane-esque deal (a la Giambi), then you can’t complain at the deal (much like I couldn’t complain at the price Giambi was signed at).
I still don't think he's a clear upgrade
I could easily see him putting up a .650 OPS with defense that isn’t better than Crosby’s. It’s not a stretch. Cabrera is declining.
Would I take Cabrera at Crosby’s salary instead of Crosby? Probably. But no way do I want him in addition to Crosby, plus losing the draft pick, for production I’m not convinced is worth even a win over Crosby.

With all this posturing from the FO about "taking pressure off the young arms and giving them support"
Wouldn’t adding a veteran SP, you know, accomplish that too?
"We were s--, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."
I think it's just a matter of relative prices
For whatever reason, the prices of hitters have been much lower this offseason, while the price of pitchers is only slightly lower. Given that, buying a lot of hitting and not much pitching is a logical strategy.
I still can’t see how it wouldn’t be worth taking a flyer on a Mulder type, though.

What?
Let’s see, the price of hitting is low…(think Texiera) but the price of pitching is lower…(think Mulder) so “we” think it ‘s logical to buy a lot of hitting and not much pitching…sometimes I think it’s better to not say …boy my foot tastes interesting this morning.

"I've been accused of using too many words...I suppose that's like accusing Mozart of using too many notes." Bill King
I have no freakin' clue what autosomal means
But it sounds cool!
The monster at the end of this blog.
An autosome is a non-sex chromosome
An autosomal dominant gene is one which is heritable in such a way that if you get a copy of it from either of your parents, you’ll show the trait in question. Brown eyes are dominant— if you get a copy of the brown-eyed gene, you’ll have brown eyes no matter what the other gene is.
It’s contrasted with sex-linked genes, like the hemophilia gene, which have funky inheritance patterns because men and women have different sex chromosomes.

…isn’t some crappy beat writer making shit up as he goes along. The question, though, is where he’s getting his info. If it’s coming from the A’s, then it might be realistic. If it’s coming from anywhere else, forget it. It’s possible that Beane or Forst said something like, “We can’t afford Johnson AND a free agent” to someone, and that got picked up this way. But it could be a meaningless off-the-cuff comment.
The only way I can place a Johnson for Barton trade is if the A’s feel that Carter will be the sole 1B candidate in 2010 and don’t want someone like Barton standing in his way. But even that doesn’t make much sense.
or we have a SS coming in from somewhere else.

Rosenthal has been running this rumor out once a week for the last month. He seems to think that continually including it in his columns will somehow make it true…
The A’s don’t need Nick Johnson. Not at his contract price. Not at half his contract price. I’ve seen Billy Beane do a lot of crazy shit, but I’ve never seen him do something that made no sense from an organizational perspective. Acquiring Nick Johnson makes no sense. Ken Rosenthal is simply wrong about this rumor, and there’s no reason to keep talking about it…
I could see us acquiring O-Cab if the price is low enough, and I could see Beane carrying Croz as a high-priced utility guy even though it doesn’t fit the A’s typical philosophy. That said, I have a feeling we’re starting the season with Croz as the starter at SS, and I don’t see a huge problem with that…
We need to focus on starting pitching.

It may have credence
if Beane is throwing it out there to convince Cabrera he has other options in mind. It’s getting a little late in the off season you know. Maybe the FO is trying to convince him that the A’s at our price is his best option?

Exactly - I imagine Nick Johnson is one of those guys
the A’s have coveted for years and thought they might be able to get some day due to his injury issues. But once they signed Giambi, the window for acquiring Johnson closed entirely on 2009.
