Chavez looking good?

Here is an interesting entry from The Disabled List Informer. While most of the article speaks of his injury history, and the details of his most recent procedure, there is also a qoute from Geren about how Chavez has looked in the cage recently.

When asked about how Chavez has been looking in the batting cage, A’s manager Bob Geren said , "Everyone I’ve talked to says he looks incredible, I mean, really, really good. Better than anyone expected."

The Disabled List Informer is written by a physical therapist, and he seems to give the clearest descriptions about players heading to, or coming off the DL. (A handy reference for an A's fan). I read his site a bunch last year.

There is also an entry on The Duke's chance of a repeat perfomance in 2009.

Nice

We’ll definitely need a healthy Chavez if we want to compete for the division title.

expectations of chavez

beane called him a potential hall of fame talent..said he looked like a young bonds. every media person said he is destined to have that breakout, mvp type season eventually.

now if A’s are lucky, he’ll be a 20hr/80 rbi type w/ plus defense…basically pedro feliz type production

Eric Chavez and Pedro Feliz are really not alike offensively. Chavez can actually do a lot more than hit for power.

feliz couldnt take a walk if it was handed to him

Chavez can and will

If Chavez had not been injured so much

we woulda been a HoFer. 400HRs 6+ GGs, likely more.

Yet he likely never would've made an All Star team

Well hes always a slow starter.

That doesnt help.

I'm surprised Chavez is already swinging

That’s the best sign, to me. Maybe he actually will be ready by spring training.

Considering that I'm not expecting much, this is probably true.

If Chavez is healthy who knows what he's capable of...

He looked pretty damned good last year before he went down for good. And Pedro Feliz could not hold Chavvy’s jock by the way.

by mrod on Jan 17, 2009 3:53 PM PST reply actions

Do you know anyone who would really have an interest in holding Chavvy's jock?

But I do hope when he starts playing in ST that he has it on, for his own protection.

I really hope Chavez is doing as well as it sounds in the quote! I’ve missed him!! He is such a great player and it’s a shame that injuries have really haulted his career for awhile now. It would be amazing for him to come back healthy and give this team back such a quality player.

I miss having that hitter that hits the pitchers pitch

or even the one that is really not even the pitchers pitch, but more of the backstops pitch.

Go Chavez!

I have to admit, he looked really good.

No no, what he means is he can't feel his shoulder anymore, and it's great to not have pain

Of course they amputated the arm two months ago and they just haven’t told him yet.

yeah

I was rereading Moneyball the other day and hearing Billy talk about how amazing young Chavvy looked in 2002 and how he seemed destined for the hall, and it just made me sad as hell. I’d love to see him have another healthy season where he can remind us all what a badass he is.

Another article from that link to Hardball Times about Ben Sheets

it’s from May 2008 but it was a fascinating read on Sheets’ history and his mechanics. A very good read in my opinion.

here we go again...

The Chicago Sun Times reports that Rich Harden has a small tear in his shoulder joint, calling it “just severe enough that some players might seek surgery but slight enough to be in a range often treated effectively with a strengthening program.”
The report comes after pitching coach Larry Rothschild raised concerns about Harden’s status by saying Saturday during a fan gathering that “he’s not close to throwing off a mound yet” and "there’s some issues there, no question.‘’ Harden did his best to quiet any concerns, saying: ’I’m on a set program, and I’m not behind at all. ’I’m right on schedule and feeling great. I’ll be ready for the start of the season for sure. There’s no doubt in my mind. Nobody has any doubts whether I’ll be ready or not. I will.’’

by Asfan4ever723 on Jan 18, 2009 9:31 AM PST reply actions

I'm telling you, that unpopular Harden trade

is going to look good before all is said and done. Still a good deal for the Cubs, because they already got what they wanted – a shot at the 2008 post-season with the depth to potentially go further than the first round – but a good deal for Oakland too.

That will really depend on how Gallagher turns out

I don’t think anyone expects much from Murton or Patterson. Donaldson maybe, but he’s a long shot, too.

by iglew on Jan 18, 2009 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

I expect Gallagher to be very good,

Donaldson to make the major leagues, Murton to languish for a while and then be included in a trade, and Patterson to suck mercilessly.

Does Murton have options left?

He might not be around long enough to languish.

Forgive me I have no faith in Harden's assurances... been there, done that... too many times.

While I miss seeing Harden pitch for the A's

I really don’t miss the other 95% of the time that he’s injured.

Now I only have to feel bad for the guy personally and wish him well but I don’t have any personal vested interest any more.

I don't miss him - because it was too stressful

but i reserve my emotion until then. i want the guy to do what he supposedly can, but i am not holding my breath. if he did come out slugging, it would be a sorely missing piece.
