A's Fantasy camp
Yes it's expensive, but if you love baseball, good at it or not. It's something you should do before you can't. You will have the time of your life. One week of being a "Major Leaguer." Not to mention hanging out with the guys you watched play for the Green and Gold.
This Sunday, my wife and I embark for Phoenix, and the A's spring training complex for a week of playing baseball. I first went four years ago, and was not expecting much; was I ever wrong. Upon arrival, they take you to Papago sports complex where the A's hold spring training. You walk into the locker room and find your locker. I set my stuff in mine, and look to see who is around me. Hmmm next to my locker is Dave Henderson's, behind me is Blue Moon Odom's, around to the side Is Campy's, Carny Lansford. WOW, how cool is this.
After a day of station to station drills we are drafted onto teams, I had Blue Moon, and Mike Davis my first year, we stunk, lost every game, but who cared it was a blast. My second year, I had to go back, I had Dave Henderson and Blue Moon as managers, we were better, but failed to win more than two. That year my wife decided to join me, she never played baseball before, and the staff of A's players helped her so much by the end of camp she was doing great. I won the camp Cy Young award in my second year, but no MLB contract, bummer.
So I keep going back, last year was the best. Campy and Shooty Babbit were our managers. I started by K in my first three AB's. After two years of .638 and .524 avgs I was stumped, until Campy, pulls me out of the dugout and changes my stance. How do you listen to a legend and pay attention? It worked, next AB Double, Campy, in the third base coach's box claps and smiles at me, wow. I finished with a .486 avg thanks to him. We went on to the championship game at Phoenix Muni, and we won a nail biter. After winning, I could see why the A's of the early 70's won, Campy wanted to win, knew how to win, and he had that fire in his eyes.
After the championship game, we play the pros, I got to pitch my only inning of the camp, I faced Dave Henderson, (pop up), Tony D, and Mike Moore, I struck him out. After the game at the awards dinner, the pros had out their autographed game jerseys to campers that they felt did a good job. Campy gave me his, that was probably the highlight of my baseball carrer. My favorite A's player growing up, said I was good.
Me catching the last out of chamiponship gameEvery evening we meet at the players lounge and get to hear stories from the players that you will never read in the sports. They are the nicest group of guys, but I have to watch Blue Moon, I think he likes my wife. He gave her his jersey the first year she played. He always sits next to her at those functions!! How can I compete. We always spend the evening having drinks with them and get to know them on a personal level. I just can't wait, we packed a week ago. You can check our photos on the web site, they post new photos every day.

I've definitely been wanting to do this
I think in the next year or two I’ll be able to.

Yep. I've looked at some of the daily summaries from the past couple years...
…and it all sounds like an absolute blast.
I’m just not sure what I’d want to do more – pitch or play first base. Maybe I could switch off and do both, who knows?
Awesome getting the jersey from Campy, too.

Yes
You can play anywhere you want, all you have to do is ask one of the managers. I play First, catch, outfield and pitch.

Awesome
I caught and pitched in Senior League (between frosh/soph years in high school), played outfield in middle school and high school, then pitched and played first base later in high school.
All are fun in their own ways, but I think you know that already.

You would have more experiance
than most campers, some come in having never played before, but it does’nt matter. There is no pressure, everyone helps each other and has a good time. They just want you to have a good time.

Oh, definitely
Making it a memorable experience is #1 on the list, though I’m sure the competitive juices get flowing anyway.
Just playing in a slow-pitch softball league has been pretty fun. It’s good to be active.

thats freaking awesome
great post
"My group runs some frogloks down the hall to finish them off and POP! RASTER! If there was a way to scream louder than caps in EQ I was doing it. Man I am straight panicking because I know I have NO CHANCE soloing and the party has run off. I'm in my hotel room; it's like 5am, and I am straight hollering, in EQ and in real life. Bottom line is the group comes back, heals me, and kills Raster! WOOT!" -Curt Schilling on his favorite memories in the video game "EverQuest"
Thanks!

You could befriend A-Rod and ask him for a few innings pay

That was my reaction
When I saw how much it was, but it is worth it, I just can’t put into words how much fun I have there. I have managed to scrimp and save every year in order to pay for it.

Great stuff, bb81
(I’m lazy with names today; usually I spell them out.)
Anyways, when I first read the title, I thought this was another rookie hazing photo post.
I'm here to talk about the past.
Thx 67
I was jelous of your good writing, so I had to take a stab at it.

Wife sent me to red sox fantasy camp a couple years ago
Good news was jim corsi was my coach, so we talked A’s stuff all the time. The other highlight was that I got to hang out with Joe Castiglione, the Sox announcer. He told me great stories about the then quite recently departed Bill King. Joe is definitely a fan.
I highly recommend the experience, and of course it would have been better to do A’s camp, she was just tweaking me by sending me to HER team.

Many attendees
Have gone to different camps, and all say that the A’s camp is the best.

I've always thought that sounded like a lot of fun.
Could I be Fantasy Camp Stomper?
Ray: "How fun is it to be up here playing in the Big Leagues?"
Gio: "It's *SUPER* fun!!!"
Interesting
We had no mascot, but when he was with the A’s Nick Swisher would sit in the dugouts with us and cheerlead, and high 5 us. When my wife drove me in from third, he was out on the field high 5ing her.

Maybe you and Blue Moon both need to keep an eye on Swish.

That looks like a great Father Son Trip

Last year
We had a father son combo on out team, it was great. The son swung at a bad pitch and his dad, who was in in mid 70’s was all over him. The dad could rake! but he couldn’t run, but we have runners for those who cant, so you can still hit, and don’t have to run.

Women can do it too?
Really? I was sure it was a guy thing-not that there’s anything wrong with that. Was your wife the only female participant? I would love to hear what her day was like.

Yes
We usually have three or four in camp, they set up a separate locker room up for the ladies. My wife actually attended my first camp as a fan. She had so much fun she decided to play the following year, and now comes with me every year. She never played hardball before, but played softball. The coaches really make sure to help those who need it. By the time the week ended she was hitting the ball well, and really had fun. The nice thing about the camp is that no matter how good you are everyone pulls for each other. There is no pressure.

What, are you setting up a "Fantasy Monkeycamp" in Arizona this year?

Awesome pics!
I’d love to be able to do this (granted, I have to be a better place financially).
Question: I saw that Hendu runs a Mariners Fantasy Camp also. Did you get to face off against those guys?
Play more Conan!
this year is the first year
That we have faced them. Sadly they beat us 6-2, I pitched, gave up three and lost. Waaaa. All in all we are 2-1 and we are having a good time, but we are both pooped. Tonight we go to dinner with Campy, and Shooty Babbit. Stew has been a scream this camp, he has been really funny.
