Angels Trading for Dye?

EDIT:  Rumor has been shot down, crap!

MLBtraderumors suggests that the angels are interested in trading for Jermaine Dye and that the White Sox would seek Figgins, possibly more in return...

I was wondering what AN would think about this move potentially...

Star-divide

From what I can gather, I think this would be a good thing for us. Dye and his whopping ~1.5 WAR would replace either Willits (~1.3 WAR) or Gary Mathews Jr. (~0 WAR), so it would be an upgrade there, but Figgins, despite his mediocrity projects to play average defense at the hot corner and is worth 2.1 WAR. They would conceivably replace Figgins with Brandon Wood at 3B who projects to be both a below average hitter and fielder. I'd be interested in a WAR projection for Wood if anyone had one?

Icing on the cake would be that Figgins perceived value is likely to be lower than Dye's so the Angels might have to part with a prospect as well.

Conclusions: Dye + Wood < Figgins + Willits
Although Dye + Wood might be better than Figgins + GMJ
Dye costs 6 million more than Figgins and the Angels would probably be done for the off-season.
They might also weaken the farm in the process.

This would be great for us when you compare Dunn as an alternative. The Angels could actually end up a worse team after a Dye trade, green lighting the A's to go for it.

This seems like exactly what the Angels need:

A 35 year-old corner outfielder with extremely limited defensive abilities and an 8-figure contract.

hopefully they would pick up his 2010 option also.

That a 3 yr. extension would be in the works as well.

Slightly Off Topic

they also just signed Scoscia for 10 years. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Scoscia is a decent manager (not that managers account for much in the way of wins), but at 10 years, that may come back to bite them a little. That is sure a long time to commit to any person in MLB. Of course, this isn’t an A-Rod contract or anything, but it is rare to have a manager stay that long in any given position. Good for him though.

he does a decent job and everything

but why are you locking up a manager for 10 years? i don’t think people are going to come and steal mike scoscia away because he’s such a valuable manager. i don’t get it either

What's interesting is that there have actually only been

32 managers in major league baseball since 1976. Only two are ever out of work at any given time.

i may be misinformed about contracts with coaches, but cant they just fire them whenever the hell they want.

ya, im a raiders’ fan.

Yes, but they have to pay the contract

so it would be a problem for the Angels if they decided in May, 2009 that they weren’t so enamored of Scioscia after all.

I have a feeling Wood isn't the real deal,

but obviously he does have potential.

As far as Dye goes, my knee-jerk reaction is to be worried that the Angels could get another “middle of the order” hitter, because it is what they are so severely lacking. But if it stops them from getting a younger and better one, e.g., Dunn, and forces them to part with a decent player and/or prospect, then I agree with ChadGod that it could be a good thing because the upgrade is actually pretty marginal overall.

White Sox Trade

The only way I would like this deal is if the A’s can turn around and trade the White Sox for Figgins to replace Crosby.

Sometimes life will strike you out on a curve ball and the only choice you have is to flip off the umpire and walk to first base anyway.

Figgins can't play SS though

He’d be a good backup for Chavez.

Even with the park adjustment,

he had an MLE that was basically better than league average in AAA. As a 23-year-old shortstop with insane power potential.

I’d really rather the Angels found a way to get him out of town. He’s high-risk, I’ll grant you, but his upside is ridiculously high. Even a conservative prospecter like me gives that a lot of credence. If he was still eligible for prospect status, I’d certainly have him in my top 50.

With that said, it can’t be helped. The Angels have him and either they screw him up or they don’t, and they can always just choose to give him a starting job at any time. I can’t oppose a trade on the grounds that it might force them to pull their heads out of their rear ends. If this goes through, it’s basically a win for Oakland.

Precisely. I can definitely see Wood having a breakout year, and I hope they keep him buried.

B Wood

is still relatively young and only had 150 ABs last year. Of course, he was absolutely atrocious, but his AAA stats are pretty good. The problem is that I don’t think his defense is going to be very good at SS, and it’s likely that will hurt his value a lot further on down the road. But I really do think he still has a decent shot to do something good in the majors.

His AAA stats

came in one of the better hitters’ leagues in the minors, and with his home games played in SLC, elevation: 4,226 ft.

CHONE on Wood has him at -11 BRAA and +1 FRAA

So that’s -10 vs Average with +20 for Replacement, leading to a 1 WAR player. There’s no positional adjustment for 3B.

If Dye is 1.5 WAR as you say, then Dye + Wood = 2.5 WAR

CHONE has Figgins -4 BRAA and 0 FRAA, so that’s 1.6 WAR. I guess he didn’t get any special favors.

If Willits is 1.3 WAR as you say then that’s 2.9 WAR and a better alignment than the proposed one.

It’s pretty close though. It really depends on whether Wood is good or not.

Wood = Piatt

I have been hearing for the last 3 years how great Wood is but as I see it he was never a good SS. Aybar a 280 hitter with no power is their SS. At third he is below average defensively. He can’t hit the breaking ball and is another Crosby in he gets lucky when guessing fast balls. If wood was any good as advertised he would be untradeable and their starting 3b with figgins in the outfield but he stinks.

by Arcman on Jan 13, 2009 7:47 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wood was just 23 this year.

That’s a little early to give up on the guy. Piatt hadn’t even made the majors until his age 24 season.

Why would the angels try and get Dye when Manny is still in the market and they’ve got the money to spend?

by EL E Phant on Jan 13, 2009 10:13 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not so sure about that.

Last year’s Opening Day payroll for them was $119M. I dunno what the target is this year, but given the economy it seems likely it won’t be higher. Depending on what happens in their arb hearings, they’re going to be right around $100M with what they’ve got. If Manny’s looking for more than $20M/year, he may be wanting more money than they’re prepared to spend.

by Nate on Jan 13, 2009 10:22 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Apparently they don't want to be used by Team Manny to drive up the price for someone else,

although I’m not sure why they wouldn’t want that.

From an article a few weeks ago

it seemed like no one really wants to sign Manny.

The way teams view it; He will be too expensive. And in the unlikely event you sign him to a cheaper contract than he thinks he is worth, he will half-ass it, thus MAKING himself not worth the contract and being a disturbance on the team.

Dye would be replacing Anderson more than Willits/GMJ

either way it’s not a huge upgrade. The Angels giving up Chone in the process would be gravy. Part of his value is his ability to play six positions and leaving you with many roster options all season, and this isn’t calculated by WAR…

by scatterbrian on Jan 13, 2009 12:17 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, Anderson is not on the team anymore so Dye would not be replacing him

I get what you are saying, but your premise is to evaluate the Angels relative to last year’s team, whereas my premise to evaluate their true talent.
