Perspectives on the annual SABR convention?
I am an A's fan. This you can all see. But what might not be as clear is just how much I love all of baseball in addition to the A's. Billy's moves might be the ones that I obsess over the most (I loved the Giambi pick-up BTW), but I'm just as intrigued by Mark Shapiro's moves over in Cleveland. My memories of the game begin with Rickey Henderson, my favorite player as a kid, but I also enjoy reading about Tris Speaker, a man who played his best ball before my 93-year-old grandmother was born. I am a baseball fan. Which means it's probably for the best, lest I drive my family and friends insane, that I was given a SABR membership for Christmas.
Now, however, I have a question for anyone who is, or has been, a SABR member. What do you think of their annual conventions? I'm (somewhat prematurely) thinking of ways to use my 12 vacation days from work and even though my membership is barely a month old, I figured it might be fun to use four of the days and see how the convention plays out. But then I also thought it be fun to take a week and follow the A's through the Northeast. There's just not enough time to do everything, I suppose.
And so naturally, as I have in the past, I decided I'd turn to all of you, the first baseball community that I grew attached to, in looking for an answer. Consider this a discussion of all things SABR, but really, as I said and as the subject line states, I'd love to get some thoughts on the SABR convention in particular.
Thanks, folks, my best to one and all.

Wes,
I am so happy for you and what a great gift! I am envious. I don’t know much about the conventions. I have heard that they have wonderful presentations on the negro leagues. If you go to the convention you’d better come back and give us a full report with a fanpost! Have fun.

A STATHEAD CONVENTION?!?!
What are you guys gonna do, leave your collective mom’s basements and play D&D or something?
I’m jealous. :(

SABR member here
But I’ve never been to the convention, so I can’t help you out there. I think I read that it’s going to be in Washington this year, but people were pissed because they’d scheduled it for a time when the Nats were out of town.
I also have a great affinity for those early days. What an amazing time for baseball (if not for ballplayers salaries). Tris Speaker must’ve been one hell of a fielder (pretty good hitter, too, I guess!). I’m sure you know he played briefly at the end of his career for the A’s.
