Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

DLD 1/10/09

So the Ravens are about to face off against the Titans in Nashville. The Titans, who own the AFC's number 1 seed are 3 point favorites, but many actually consider the Ravens favorites. If you love defense, tune in!

DeMarcus Ware won the Dick Butkus award for best linebacker. Apparently, it was expanded this year to include professional and high school athletes as well as college athletes.

As somebody personally affected by the war in the Middle East, I don't want to say anything inflammatory here because I'll probably get too pissed off about it (besides, I've already battled people on Facebook, that was a mistake). But Yahoo provided some pretty distressing news today in a blurb in this article

"In other serious, sad news, this week Amy Winehouse and her superstar producer Mark Ronson, both of whom are Jewish, were allegedly targeted by Islamic extremists. U.K. newspaper The Sun reported that a post in a forum on Ummah.com called for users to compile "a list of top Jews we can target," and the list included both Amy and Mark's names. British anti-terror expert Glen Jenvey told The Sunthat these threats should not be taken lightly: "The Ummah website has been used by extremists. Those listed should treat it very seriously. Expect a hate campaign and intimidation by 20 or 30 thugs." As if Amy Winehouse didn't have enough troubles..."

I've obviously been following the overall situation closely, this is just pretty sad.

In the same article there is also a blurb about Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, the daughter of late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. She has written and produced a rap about her mother and it's been uploaded on youtube, here.

Check out mycityscrewups, a new website attempting to serve as a forum for your local community. The goal is to make an account and upload any complaints or issues in your community, or promote positive things and advertise local events and such. Disclaimer: I'm advertising this because it is my parent's startup. But I actually figured that the people of Athletics Nation are just the kind of people who would appreciate a website like this.

Finally, Go Bears! As a freshmen at Cal right now, I'm ecstatic with the way this team is playing and with the way the program is evolving. Our overall record is 14-2, with an 8 game win streak. We just swept the Arizona schools (including 17th ranked ASU) and are going for a road Washington sweep today at 3 against UW. It's early, but we might actually be tourney bound this year!!

Red Sox add to their "low-risk/high-reward" offseason acquisition list

by signing former Dodger RP Takashi Saito

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9058832/Red-Sox-sign-free-agent-reliever-Saito-

So, that’s 4 guys in roughly the past week that the Red Sox have acquired on similar deals- they signed Brad Penny, John Smoltz, and Rocco Baldelli previously.

And those 4 guys include two potentially #2 or #3 starting pitchers in a rotation, a proven reliever with excellent stats as an MLB closer, and a high upside fairly young (27) outfielder.

I remember recent opining about the Yankees and their continual spending sprees on marquee free agents, and, while I agree that’s an issue, the ability of the Red Sox to sign so many guys to reasonable base and high incentive deals like this has to be a concern for smaller market teams like the A’s that can’t gamble on this many guys and potentially tie up this much projected salary if they all make good on their deals.

And that can’t compete with the incentives offered by a team like the BoSox, because said big money club simply has more money available, when trying to sign just one such player never mind four. To wit: the Reds and Pirates were in on Baldelli for sure, and the Braves would’ve liked Smoltz back but were unwilling or unable to offer as much guaranteed money or as much in potential incentives. The Red Sox got both.

So, kudos to Boston for some potentially great pick-ups… must be nice to have that much money to gamble on such acquisitions… but is this just another way that big money teams can keep premium talent away from smaller market clubs?

Another, perhaps more interesting, question: whose moves would you rank higher now, as the offseason stands today: BoSox or Yanks?

by still bills kingdom on Jan 10, 2009 3:43 PM PST reply reply actions actions   1 recs

In terms of spending inequality,

I think Yankees style spending is more a problem than Red Sox style.

The Red Sox can sign a whole bunch of low-risk/high-reward guys, sure, but they’ve still got to fit them all on the 40-man roster. Unless there’s some trick I’m not understanding, they can’t keep adding guys like this on the team and still protect their prospects, too.

by iglew on Jan 11, 2009 12:50 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree with your point on 40-man roster space, and it's something I was wondering about

as well. It’s one thing to sign these guys to split minor/major league contracts if they can get the player to agree to that, but I’m sure they have to be added to the 40 man roster… so it’s odd to me that the Red Sox would be willing to clear 4 spots like that.

I can think of a couple scenarios that might explain it, but actually in checking right now it seems that 3 of the 4 have already been added and that they did indeed have to DFA 3 guys to make room:

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=bos

Charlie Zink, a knuckleballer, was DFA’d to make room for Baldelli; don’t know if he’s been claimed yet.

I read about another two guys getting claimed immediately upon being placed on waivers, Dewon Day by Tampa Bay and Virgil Vasquez by San Diego. I don’t think they’ve officially added Smoltz yet, and since he probably won’t pitch ’til June and ended last year on the DL I wonder if they have to add him to the 40 man at all, or if they can put him straight on the DL without DFAing somebody else?

They also just re-signed Kotsay apparently, so that might be another roster maneuver…

Anyway, I agree with you a team can realistically only add so many free agents or so many guys like this without completely mangling their 40 man roster. The point I was raising and considering was that signing guys on “make good” deals has been a tactic Oakland has used in previous years, and that other small market teams could afford to use, as a way of potentially acquiring impact players without breaking the bank on big free agent contracts… and if the Red Sox and/or Yankees start outbidding small market teams on these sorts of opportunities too, then… that’s just one more avenue for obtaining premium talent closed off to all but a handful of MLB clubs then, isn’t it?

And I suppose you could argue that when you’re the Yankees and/or Red Sox a strong farm system is almost more of a luxury than a necessity, in some ways… so maybe they don’t mind losing a couple reasonable prospects if they can get the potential return of a healthy Smoltz or Penny in their rotation, a healthy Saito setting up Papelbon, and a Rocco Baldelli who may finally be able to stay healthy and be about as good a 4th outfielder this year as any team in baseball could hope to have.

by still bills kingdom on Jan 11, 2009 11:27 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   1 recs

Did you really mean to write "low risk"?

Best case scenarios, these guys seem moderate risks.

by LowcountryJoe on Jan 11, 2009 5:09 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's not really my word choice, it's more a general description that gets thrown around

when talking of acquisitions of this sort. The A’s are a team that has made a specialty of this sort of acquisition under Beane’s leadership, actually.

The “low risk” part of it is generally because the player is given only a one year deal and only some money is guaranteed up front, usually a small amount relative to the potential value of the contract if most or all incentives are earned due to player performance. And the guaranteed money in the contract is generally very little compared to the accepted talent level of the player, should the player regain full health and perform at or near his expected level.

So it’s “low risk” because it doesn’t obligate the team beyond the given season, and because the team will only be paying the full value of the contract if the player is healthy and performs well.

by still bills kingdom on Jan 11, 2009 11:03 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ah ha! That makes sense.

The financial obligations are very do-able even if/when the player is a bust.

I’m not sure what Saito, Penny, and Baldelli are getting (nor for how long) but Smoltz is going to earn $10 million. THe committment is right (one year) but $10 mil is a good bit of mula.

by LowcountryJoe on Jan 11, 2009 11:39 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, Smoltz can apparently make up to $10MM but his guarantee is around $5MM

and I believe Penny’s deal is similar- $5MM guaranteed and incentives that can take it as high as $9MM or $10MM.

Baldelli is getting considerably less on the guarantee, only $500k to start.

Saito is getting something in the $2MM to $2.5MM range guaranteed, with incentives that could take his earnings, based on performance, as high as $7MM or so apparently.

Link for Smoltz and Baldelli: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/01/red-sox-agree-t.html

I agree that $5MM guaranteed with possible total payable of $10MM for the year is a good chunk of change… which goes to back to my ruminations regarding bigger money teams essentially pricing smaller teams out of this potential market for premium talent that could be signed on “make good” deals…

Watching the Ravens-Titans right now

Tennessee is trying its best to lose this game with three turnovers deep in Ravens territory. Here’s hoping the Titans figure out a way to pull this one out – I can’t stand Ray Lewis the murderer.

Way to keep battling back

Down late in regulation, down in each overtime, and I thought they were cooked when Randle fouled out. It’s nice to see players improving as we go along. Seemed like Ben Braun could bring the talent to Berkeley, but then they stagnated…no improvement in skills over the course of the season. Early indications are, that is something that has changed.

by Soaker on Jan 10, 2009 6:06 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The offense is night and day

Braun just couldn’t coach offense, and it seemed like most of the time the strategy was to pass the ball around the perimeter and hope something would happen.

A total gut-wrencher

But it only makes us stronger. And its not secret that Randle is a whole new player under Montgomery, and that is perhaps the biggest difference and most glaring example of the Braun/Monty switch. Also, Robertson showed today why he was so sorely missed last year. He’s a leader and he is a big shot maker.

Something to note: Cal is now 15-2. That can’t be understated. If they win 5 more games, they have a damn good shot at the tourney. At this point, we can reasonably expect to at least win that many more games and probably more. Holy crap, we were what, 16-16 last year?

Shrug

As someone who knew the players that Cal had coming into the season pretty well, it’s not all Montgomery. Christopher is an NBA-type talent. 6-5, incredible athleticism, and a good shooter. Randle might be the best pure shooter in college basketball.

Sure would have been awesome to see that team with Ryan Anderson, but I can’t fault any player who leaves to become an NBA first-round pick.

I've been a Cardinal fan since '84

And I can tell you that I haven’t sniffed a feel good story like this since Rod Tidwell broke a Redbird receiving record and finally got his money.

On a more serious note, the ’98 season playoff win against the Cowboys was very nice but the drubbing the next week at the hands of the Vikings was not.
